I just recently upgraded my PC to Windows 7 and downloaded SH4-Gold from Ubisoft thinking it might be a better performer in Windows 7. I had tried my original SH4 on my laptop that runs Windows 7 and it didn't work very well, had to delete it. Anyway, my SH4-Gold is up and running fine, but there are new things that aren't even mentioned in the original manual.
During my last patrol one of my crew members was granted a special ability titled "Over Charge" claiming that it's use would eliminate Dud Torpedoes and that torpedoes that struck their target would inflict greater damage. It also lists the special capability as "Duration: 5 mins", and "Available: 1 hour". During an attack on an enemy target I moved the crewman to the required area of the sub and both of the torpedoes struck the target and exploded, sinking the ship. This patrol was early in 1942 so there would normally be a strong chance of dud torpedoes, especially of the torpedoes impact the target off 90 degrees, which both of the launched units did.
Does anyone know how the "Special Capabilities" work, especially the time elements? I've never encountered this facet of the game in my original game and have no idea how it works or what other "Special Capabilities" are available.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can render.

Welcome abroad, miteymitey. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
The Special Abilities are (as the name implies), areas of specialty in which the specific crewman excels. There are many different types and these change with, or are unique to, some of the major mods.
Those with "Passive" abilities are available (or working) all the time. Those with time durations, in most cases, should be cut & dry as per their specifications. In this particular case, your man has a duration of 5 minutes and is available for 1 hour.
I may be wrong, and I hope someone expounds upon this subject if I am, but I interpret his particular specifications to suggest that he is only available for 5 minutes during a 1 hour period. In other words, once he is used, you must wait another hour before he is used again.
Hope this helps some. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As Tambor stated, most have passive skills and you only need place them in the right compartment. Mods may differ, but in the right compartment their icon should show an active green.

Depending on the mod stacking more than one in the same compartment may give more benefit, but some the benefit is maxed out when one man.

The ones with time limits you have to activate yourself, plus have them in the right compartment. It's been months since I've played, but seems with TMO you should have a seperate icon showing a lil man that you click on to activate those with time limits, then a timer will appear.

Say you have two specials that increase speed for 6 hours by 1.5 knots. If you activate both at the same time you can actually get a speed increase by 3kts, but two is the max.

The timing is set for five minutes of usage and it will be an hour before you can use him again.
