View Full Version : Is FragDolls the Hooters of video gaming?

"Nobody goes to Hooters for wings!"
-Chris Rock

Take a look at another girl gamer site.

http://www.gamegirlz.com/

Now compare to FragDolls.

Notice any difference? FragDolls has an image gallery of the girls playing video games. Gamer Girlz has reviews of video games from a female perspective. FragDolls has cloying blog entries about shopping. Gamer Girlz has editorials about the video game industry. Game Girlz has one stylized logo with a girl on it. FragDolls is dripping with images of the girls themselves and sylized drawings of them in that bizzaro, sassy, sexy chick style. They even use them for their sig images.

Now which site has more substance about girls and gaming, and which is eye candy aimed at 15-22 year old males?

Note that most of the guys posting here on the forums are just that, guys! Can it be that you're all letting your hormones affect your judgement? Would you be so supportive (to the point of sucking up) if the FragDolls weren't attractive girls?

Yeah, there may be a stereotype about girls and gaming, but I don't think FragDolls is doing anything positive about it. In fact, I think they're pulling girl gamers down with their schmoozing to the young male demographic.

Again, just something to think about, my friends.

I'm on hold with the Modesto Superior Court's traffic division so I'll just address the reason that comparison doesn't work very well. Gamegirlz is a review site, FragDolls, while sponsored by Ubi, sure, is more of a clan site with opinions and all that mixed in. It'd be like comparing Gamespot to Team Abuse's site (old Wolf clan for those that don't know) and the two don't serve the same purpose.

I'll let someone else debate the merits of the rest of your points 'cause uh.. I don't care. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif Also.. sheriffs suck.

(hey, Rat, I like the avatar. My little brother plays by the name of Jazz and, naturally, uses the Autobot of the same name for his)

FragDolls seems to be a site to pimp the FragDolls and indirectly draw attention to UbiSoft. How do we even know anything written on the site isn't written by UbiSoft. I'd be impressed even if they didn't heavily edit the content.

I'm going to leave this one at simply that you have your opinion and we have ours. If others agree with you, great, if others don't that's great too.

But I have to ask, is all of this really necessary?

Vanthem79
11-01-2004, 11:33 AM
Heh heh, I liked Go-Bots. -_- I always ended up missing the TF cartoon somehow.

Stroll down 80's Lane aside, I wouldn't say the FDs are mouthpieces for Ubi in any real sense. Slick marketing for the company? No doubt, but I'd lay odds the views and sentiment expressed by the girls are genuine.

Besides, when you get down to it, does it matter much in the long run?

EDIT: Curse you and your succinct reply for getting there before me, Vision. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

I think it matters when the FragDolls supposed "purpose" (as stated in their 'about' link) is to raise awareness about girls in gaming, when all they're doing is perpetuating the same old stereotypes about women as sex objects.

I am. I think there's a lot of negative stereotypes about gamers in general and women gamers in specific, and since I'm into the video game scene since a long time ago, it's a concern of mine.

So that is why I am personally extending an invitation to all the FragDolls, to come over to my place and play some Halo 2. :P

OMG, cant you keep your topic on the same thread!! I happen to know the leader of that clan and their link is on my OTHER clan website- as well as I am on theirs!. My other clan, of over 70 girls, are in the playoffs on the largest competitive ladder site EVERY SEASON. You see my friend I, and all these other girls, have the resumes to be in this group. In fact one of the Girlz Clan members could have easily been in Frag Dolls, BECAUSE IT IS FROM THIER SITE THAT I FOUND OUT ABOUT IT!! Please move on, becuase we have the skill, background, dedication, and experience to be a part of something unique like the Frag Dolls.

If you want to be a dedective, do some real homework before you go bashing us... please. This is an absolute digrace on your part.

For Crissake.

Private companies invent, develop and sell products. Ubisoft is a private company. Pitchmen exist to give products context, social value and memorability. The Frag Dolls are pitchmen.

But only in the simplest sense; Ubisoft has been both original and enterprising.

Effective pitchmen use their product; think Lucille Ball and Chesterfield cigarettes. If they use it and live it, and manage to combine talent with character and a little sex appeal - all the while promoting the works of the entire industry - they're top-tier, and good on them. The latter appears to be the objective of the Frag Dolls. They know games, they play games. Depending on their success, other companies might follow suit; heck, Ubisoft might consider building other teams for different product genres.

This is what the free market is all about. As I've said before, it's just about genius, and something to be proud of.

I just discovered the site yesterday.

I'm a guy.

Yes, I am definitely aware of the fact that this is a group of beautiful women who could kick my *** any day of the week in any game of theirs.. or my choice..heh. (I'm not all that great at FPS'.. but that doesn't mean I don't love to play them. I don't play to win - I play to play)

I think the point of Fragdolls.com, is two-fold:

1) To dispell the myth that there are no Girl-Gamers at all.

2) To dispell the myth that Girl-Gamers do exist, who are both Gamers, AND Girls.. not tomboys, not.. "unattractive" (being politically correct, of course).

Then there is the media correspondent side too.. which I think is awesome.

As I said before.. I'm a guy - an honest to god, Red- Blooded American Male. I sure as hell have noticed that the FragDolls are a group of extremely beautiful women.

But that's not why I have decided to stick around and frequent the site. I appreciate their outlook, and views on gaming - and from what I can see, they are all extremely intelligent too.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting my *** kicked on Live..lol.

Liam

Addendum: And no, I'm not here to find a date =P

Thanks to all of you! I do relize that most of these gentlemen have very valid reasons as to why they are drawing their conclusions. They just are not viewing the situations in the truth of what they actually are. I am very happy to be a part of the frag dolls and will promote ANY game, be it Ubi or not, that I love and Ubi does not MAKE promote their games. Yes, I do feel a DUTY to activly promote their games that I play becuase it only promotes the frag dolls as well and I want us to be successful for everyones sake. Once again, if we succeed that door has been opened to many gamers out there that want to turn their addiction into a viable sponsorhip. They took a chance on me and I repay my depts- as long as I believe in what I am doing and do not compromise my own values. So in conculsion it is an honor for me to be a part of the Frag Dolls and GET GR2 nov 30th! Why? Because it is awesome and I wont just be playing it under my Valkyrie account- I will be playing it under my personal tag too! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

Thats the spirit Valk! I am glad you are standing up for what you believe in. I am also glad you are not taking what people are saying to heart. Because people may see you as some "booth girl", some people may see you as "The Spice Girls Of Gaming". But I see you, and the rest of the FD's as just PEOPLE that just loves to play games, Ubisoft or not. And I think thats what really matters. So please Valk, and the rest of the FD's, keep up the good work, and keep on gaming!

Valkyrie FD
11-01-2004, 05:20 PM
Thanks Nutty! I still think this topic is absolutly crazy anyway. There are a quit a few MALE teams out there that are sponsored and sponsorhip means you belive in and promote the prodoct. I certainly wouldnt take a sponsorhip from something i didnt belive in (eg. the guys game, gun company, etc) , and I hope nobody else would compromise thier morals and values for sponsorship either.

Vision2279
11-02-2004, 10:11 AM
Okay maybe I should clarify that a little. When I was referring to values there I was basically saying that part of those values consist of sticking up for what you believe in, no matter what the cost.

In this particular case, we stood up for the FragDolls despite what was being said. That's what I was driving at. I believe in these girls and I'll do whatever I have to to make sure they are represented for what they stand for. Not this BS that these guys brought in here.

Enough already, I have already demonstrated how we are doing no more then most clans do/would, including PMS. The only thing you have going for you is that you are mad about us having corporate sponsorship, and any clan seeks that. yes we are a new innovation in that we were not preexisting, but I know you saw where i stated the NFL doesnt draft the entire college team either! Gimme a Break, PLEASE!!

Let me copy my other post where I demonstrated FD has the same formula as other clans, including PMS!! Another thing to point out is that both the Girlz Clan and PMS sell their own merchandise, something the FD dont do yet!

1.) I promote and market the hell out of PMS. We have had many interviews and 4 were on xbox.com- more then FD. I also make sure that my girls register on sites and maintain a presence (1up.com, gamertagpics, gaming forums, etc). I do this because I want to be the best known clan and get my girls the recongintion they deserve. A clan is not only recognized through winning, you have to reach people.

2.) PMS also does event, although the are on a regional level, I have about 10 TX girls and we make the most of any event in this state. Here was the latest at Game Riot Dallas (http://www.pmsclan.com/pms&gameriot.htm) Just becuase we have the means to take professional shots over normal ones, isnt somethign to attack us over. Other girls would do it in a heartbeat, because girls WANT to look good.

3.) See the team shirts on the girls above? yep, we wear them to and one girl is actually showing her misriff. I dont show my midriff as a FD or as PMS, but to each his/her own! I feel it is important for a team to be identifiable, hence the shirts, and I dont feel there is anything wrong with that. I also feel that most clans if able to meet up would wear team shirts!

4.)Those anime girls that were made for us that some call too sexy? Please see the PMS forums where you will see and enterage of anime girls in our sigs. Most females want to be represented as a female and will usually choose a sexy image- who wants to have an ugly sig? Of course the anime is not made for us, but gamers like anime and like sexy/cool anime images. This is a natural blend of gamers and you can also go to other gamers forums and see anime everywhere, and sexy ones abound.

In truth while I can see why people dont want gamers to market, it is a viable way to build a clan image and to gain opportunity for clan members. ubi has their backing on FD, but any clan can do what they are doing and PMS proves this. My last blog was on how to lead and make a clan succeed and included an extensive promotion part. It is simply the best thing you can do, along with competing, to make a clan well known- and everyone wants to be known in the clan world!

It is also important to realize that we ARENT a regular clan nor do we propose this. We are a professional gaming group, period and this is a new venture.

So what this really comes down to is corporate sponsorhip, so please at least justify yourself by going and harrassing the other clans that are sponsored. At least WE were ubi fans first, and not like some other ones that dont even belive in the product!!!

Hey Valkyrie, I agree with pdiep49, it was a great post. I just feel bad that you had to do this a couple of times now when, in my opinion, you girls don't need to prove yourselves because you already have by getting sponsored as a professional clan backed by Ubi.

You gripe about their sexuality (mind you here it's just minor feminism, not blatant, hell my sites logo of the Gameinatrix IS blatant, but I like her that way) I like the soft look, but then again this site is marketed to guess who...women like me! Not little boys who are for some reason angry because Ubi hired some good looking women to promote. Next time be born a girl! you'll live longer and be a lot less stressed!

All these guys do is keep repeating themselves. even when CLEARLY addressed and thier points disputed they continue to "pop" up and HARASS us- yep that is what it is. Hope you make your parents proud- I know mine are for me being a professional girl gamer!

Lol I agree with the proud of you girls part... I aint touching the Steel Vision conversation with a 10' pole. You girls keep doing what your doing and these boys will learn to accept it or be outcasts. Everybody here is **** proud of you girls and what you are doing.

LOL I am so very proud to be a girl. Here is what I tell my sig other when he gets into the I'm the big man around here. I tell him "You can't even give birth, why would I care what you think inferior one!" <insert omnipotent echo here> That usually shuts him up, HAH!

Dude's are just asses. I'm ashamed to be a man the majority of the time. The majority of guys have this problem of being controlled by their c**ks(<- edited out of guilt). Dude... they're girls, they play games. Just because they're hosted by ubi, and are wickedly cute, doesn't change the fact that they are good gamers. Just go punch yourself or something. Look what you made me do you ***! I took a side. ah well, it's all good. Drugs and beer will make me forget.

However, leave my boys alone lol, they will be the first to jump on the guys that try to hit on us, seriously. They are my buds! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

[QUOTE}I haven't got the time for love... what with my creation of anti-grav mass transit, and the money tree i'm breeding in the back yard. Protective guys of the forum, I AM FRIEND. Your women are safe, I bare them no mac. Now, if they decide to hit on me, that's another matter. But the chances of that are... well... can you spell the raspberry sound... like pbspsbspbsbbspbspsbpsbs.[/QUOTE]

PUSHER, I did not mean to edit your post and I apologize, I thought that I was replying with quotes and messed it up! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Anyway we has some miscommunication! I took this post:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>"Dude... they're girls, they play games. As you thought these guys were trying to hit on us, because I thought you were speaking to them! Sorry for the confusion, I just wanted to set the record straight that none of the guys that actually hang out here hit on on. Those kinds of guys might stop in, but they definatly don't stick around when these boys chase them away, lol! Not that some of us mind a little flirting, as long as it is done in good taste and in fun! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif
