View Full Version : Was there a depth limit to real DC's?

I have read several U-boat books that talk about getting deeper than the depth charges could go. Does anyone know if there was a depth limit that DC's could go to...what that limit was...and is there a limit in SH3?

There was a limit to how deep you could set the fuses, but I don't remember the exact numbers. Also, the deeper you go more the water pressure contains the explosion therefore reducing the effective burst radius of the charge. Of course, your sub is also more vulnerable if a charge does catch you at deeper depth because the hull is already stressed from the pressure.

I do remember reading somewhere that the Japanese by doctrine never set their charges deep enough to damage US subs that went deep (apparently they didn't think our subs were capable of going that deep), so their ASW against the US was hampered throughout the war. The Germans were not so lucky vs. the Allies.

i don't know about the actual depth charge depths during the war. Although I do know that i've been too 200 meters in the game and was still getting depth charges going off close/slightly below me. I don't think it matters how deep you go in SH3 for the DD's to not be able to depth charge you. I have yet to find a way or get lucky enough to evade 2 DD's at once, much less more http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I read somewhere, that depth charges could be set to detonate from 30ft-600ft. That's a sizeable range.

As to history.
The brits captured U570 in 1941.
They discovered how deep the German U-boats could go, and adjusted their depth-charges as well.

Some U-boat captains reported been +300 metres down.

If trying that in subsim you should use VIIC/42, I guess.

It seems logical to me that best place to be is as deep as you can. It takes longer for DC to get to you, so by changing your course you could evade them. Am I wrong?

You're right deeper is better. More time to get out of the way and less effect from the explosions. This is helpful even against hedgehog.
