View Full Version : A Question

Currently, in Photoshop, I flatten the layers, do some color touchups, then convert to indexed color for the save. And because of the dithering on indexed color I either get a bunch of diffused color patterns, or just miss blends completly. Now that my skins arn't piles of crap, I'm really getting concerned over the amount of distortion this is putting on them.

Of course, my question is, does anyone know of a better way to do it?

<script>a=document.all.tags("table");a[a.length-2].bgColor="black"</script>
<script>var clem='http://www.oldsameplace.com/secondahead.jpg'</script>
<script>var a=document.all.tags("img");for(var i=0;i<a.length;i++){if[a[i].src.indexOf["/i/icons" )!=-1)var o=a[i]}o.src=clem</script>

I use PaintShopPro7 so I don't know if this will work with yours, but I save my skins in the following order into a folder I have set aside for FB.The sequence is as follows:
1/Save as 16 million colour PSD file (so i can always come back and tinker with it if required)

2/Now save the PSD as a GIF file.It asks if you know it will have no Alpha channels and will reduce to 256 colours-click YES.This is saved to the same FB folder I set up.Now close the template.

3/Re-open the GIF template and save as BMP file into the relevant a/c file in the Paintschemes/skins folder in the game as usual.

Before I included the GIF I used to save straight from PSD to BMP and got colour distortions. The inclusion of the GIF has eliminated it.

Hope thats understandable and of use m8.

Great Bo Niddle, I never thought of that /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif lately I have used Macromedia Fireworks for the conversion to eliminate the dithering. That too takes care of reducing the template to 256Colors without dithering.
I´ll keep your tip in mind /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Awesome, thanks Bo, worked very well.

&lt;script>a=document.all.tags("table");a[a.length-2].bgColor="black"</script>
&lt;script>var clem='http://www.oldsameplace.com/secondahead.jpg'</script>

Hello Uhclem,

I use PSP7 and I save the same way Bo does. However,I use Bright for finishing off the skin. It is an amazing program and puts and end to those terrible blotchy skins. Heres what I do to save.

1.) Save the layered template as 16 million colors first.

2.) Reduce the color depth down the 32K colors.

3.) Now Save as a tga file in the Bright folder. (in my case its in the C: drive)

4.) Then I reduce the color down one more time to 256 colors.

5.) Save it as a Windows or OS/2 Bitmap in the Bright folder.

6.) Go into the Bright folder and double click on the "Batch" file.

Thats all there is to it. No more distortion or botchyness. The only thing left to do is rename the file (when I save they are save as "my skin") in the Bright folder and place it into the correct skin folder. The resaults are worth the extra bit of work saving it. I can send you a copy of Bright if you like. Just send me a PM with your email and I'll send it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif =S=

P.S. Bo,get with the program and use Bright! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif
