...rumor is, Osprey is going to publish a book sometimes in 2010 about I-15, I-16, I-153 aces of WW2. Seeing the rumor as something that came from the Osprey forum, I think it's pretty credible info. Author is Mikhail Maslov.

Becoming an ace in an I-15 in a WW2 must have been one hell of an accoplishment! Looking forward too, thanks for sharing.

"Rata" (Rat) was a derisive nick used in SCW by Nationalistic Spanish pilots to name the enemy I-16s, but it was not used by their Republican pilots.

These called their rides "Mosca" (Fly), not only because of their size, but because the first examples came packed in big boxes which read "MOCKBA", this is, Moscow in Russian, and when they asked the Russian mechanics who were there to help assembling them, they sounded like the Spanish word for fly.

But, since History is written by the victors, most post-war Spanish literature used the mocking "Rata" term, which was thus made popular also abroad.
