I like to use a mix. Night attacks I use steam. I don't dispense with the steam torps until the T3 shows up. That's when steam FaTs arrive so I still end up using steam.

I also mix... About 3:1 in favour of steam. Chances are that I meet merchants and then the steam is good enough. Electrics I tend to use against escorts and special attacks.

I tend to use the electric torpedos for ships that can stop or turn quickly and avoid them so even if they spot the fish its too late

I mostly use electric, but I keep 2 or 3 steams around because they have a longer range and are faster. I only use them at very close range or at night.

i love the t-1 torpedoe...yes it has faults..but i like the variable speed settings...as i run the type 9 boats..b-c"s i do most of my hunting at night..i very rarely use differnt loads..but i do keep all my acoustic torps for speical events..like escorts that won't go away.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm sticking to Steam, mainly for reliability and range.
Most of my attacks are at night so bubbles don't matter. And with the range of these torps, you be well down deep and gone, b4 any escort arrives.

you only really need electrics for hunting escorts, merchents are too slow to dodge steams

Nearly all steam, I keep a couple of electric around, but usually just use them because they are loaded, i prefer the steam due to the speed and range. Did bag a destroyer with an electric though.

I love steam fish for attacking merchants. Even at long range (and its rare that I ever attack beyond 1500m, 100% difficulty) Its too late by the time they see them. Also with the extra speed it makes a hit more likley at any range than with an electric. Less traval time means less time for your shot data to deteriorate before an impact.

I load electronic only for my rear tubes as a self defense measure. In the fronts I have about a 4/1 ratio steam/electronics. Use then very rarely for escorts (I leave them alone mostly) but I do like tagging loner destroyers.
There is nothing I like more than tagging a destroyer going 30+ knots in the front ammo storage. Talk about going done quickly by the head. I've even had one pass 90 degs and be partially upsidedown as it crashed down http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As they say in Congress, I'd like to revise and extend my remarks.
The ratio of steam to electric changes as the game progresses. I start out will all steam. In 1940, I go to electrics in the stern, steam for the bow. In other words 11 steam, 3 electric. In early 1941 I added 2 electrics to the bow. It's now late '41 and I go with 4 electrics (2 loaded in tubes II & III). That's 7 steam, 7 electric.

Click on the torpedo tube or reserve slot you want to use, then double click the torpedo type in the list on the left side of the screen.

i keep a couple of electrics in the aft torpedo room in case i run into trouble with destroyers, if not, i expend them on the way back to base on any target that comes up. all other torpedoes are steamers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
on a type II, i use the steam fish exclusively

It's like a high school math problem: If a destroyer is charging in at 16 kts, and my torpedo is going 30kts, at what range can I shoot so that the torpedo hits the destroyer when it's just over 300m away? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
With a steam torp you can fire at shorter range, which may or may not mean a better chance of a hit. In good weather they'll see it coming and try to dodge. Later in the war they'll be dodging constantly anyway and will almost always avoid a slow electric torp, especially since you have to give the electric more time to travel far enough to arm.

Generally, in my Type VIIB and now my IXB I have been using use about 60/40 steam/electric overall - 50/50 in my actual tubes, only steams in external storage, and a little heavier on the electrics in on-board storage to achieve this overall ratio.
I usually fire salvos of two torps at any significant target, so I like the 50/50 split in my fore tubes that lets me fire one salvo of 2 electrics, followed by another salvo (if there's a target #2) of 2 steamers.
When I'm attacking a convoy, I generally fire the electrics first, which are slower and leave no wake, so I have time before they know they're being attacked to set up and fire the steamers - since they go faster, the steamers will generally hit at about the same time as the first salvo of electrics. Between those near-simultaneous explosions and (if I'm lucky) a hit from my stern tubes as well, the chaos is impressive and I figure the escorts will have a tougher time trying to decide how many u-boats are attacking and where I might be.

i do the same. i also have an electric in a forward tube and a spare, to eliminate convoy escorts if they become bothersome or i need to create a gap in the screen. the rest are trusty steams.

I use electric only.
So nobody sees it coming until it is slamming into their hull. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

I prefer steam. The options of extra range or higher speed are to good to take advantage of. I hit a destroyer bow shot down the throat at a distance of over 7000 metres in good daylight conditions from a surface attack. What has other people achieved range wise?
