View Full Version : My Graphics Card Went Poof

Earlier this morning, in the middle of a reply to a post, my screen went blank and a little "No Video Input" message popped up on the monitor. Arrgh! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

With fingers crossed, I moved the monitor cable to the native connection on my PC. The monitor came alive. Allright! It wasn't the motherboard. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Opened up the case and one sniff of my Nvida 7300 told me the smoke had gotten out of the card. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Since I know they run on smoke and there was no way for me to put the smoke back into it, I headed to the store where I bought it 8 months ago, card in hand. I was informed that the card was no longer available from them and I would just have to send it back to the manufacturer and wait a couple of weeks for a replacement. Two weeks without Silent Hunter. Yeah, sure. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

Well, after some "negotiations" I handed them $50.00 and walked out the door with an Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT. 512 MB of DDR ram.

Popped it into the box and fired up Silent Hunter. WOW! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I have ROW installed and with the 7300 I was getting 8 to 12 FPS with the AA at 2X and all the game setting toned down. With the 8500 and all the grapics cranked up to the max and 8X AA the game ran at 60 to 80 FPS on outside view. Hoo haa!

I've never been so happy to lose a component.

A new graphics card is always a huge boost to the overall system performance http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Luckily i never encountered a graphics card or other critical component dying while in use.

I have a 8800 GTS here http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

One door closes, and another opens...

And you can't beat that for 50 bucks!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif It is my understanding that the Graphics Police are, at this very moment, surrounding dgrayson's home and attempting to bring a peaceful resolution to the matter.

Dgrayson was last seen with his new graphics card attempting to escape through the chimney....

D....this sounds earily familiar.......I just had to spend 200+ aussie dollars to service my computer, but the dude that worked on it (Magic Muhomet), told me my graphics , or overheating was NOT the problem......it was the driver......the 'alarm' we haerd was my systems troulbleshooting device going off and attempmting to 'restart' the system over and over. He further stated the problem had a RAM solution (more needed), and he did just that......my graphic will be OK for another 6 to 12 before update, AND, he's a VISTA user himself, both personally and for his computer business affaitrs....showed me a couple of neat tricks with VISTA and claimed that he had "no problems with it".....so....all in all, many suprises! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That's a pretty big jump from a 7300 to a 8500 there, dg. I think as you have already found out, that you will be very happy with that card. Sometimes when disaster strikes, good things can come from it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Sound like you've made a nice jump there and I'm sure you'll never look back!!!

Now all I have to do is convince my wife that the hand-me-down path is the best way to repair my daughters PC! A new CPU/MB/RAM for me, my old fx-60 to the boy and his P4 to my daughter. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif

I am beginning to think of the new card as Viagra for my PC. Except it doesn't go away after a few hours. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Very nice upgrade!

Good deal too.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

And just as a heads up, the new 8800GT has just been released. Lower current draw than any 8 series card, performance near the high end 8800s and it fits in a single slot.

Just in case anyone else is looking for an upgrade soon.

I'll be soldiering on with my 7800GS OC till Storm of War: Battle of Britain is released next year.

My upgrade was from an ATI 9200SE 128MB to an nVidia (Asus) 7600GS 256MB card. A great improvement (RAM increase from 512MB to 2GB helped as well though).

IL2 Sturmovik works the way it should now with edimensional 3d stereo glasses [edit - as does Silent Hunter III, but Silent Hunter 4 doesn't seem to work].

I envy you guys so much! I had to pay $1000 for my 8800 GTX, I had to find someone who was going to US and then pay a 50% fee over the price (due the risk he was taking for having a $600 product passing without paying our bills (over 130% in eletronic products).... So a $600 video card would cost over $1500.... (and that is more than what I make working like hell)

But I can give you guys a hint about video cards, if you think it is overheating, buy a Zalman Cooler... Your graphic card will be colder than pinguin ***...

It must be nice to be rich, bf2. I guess I'll just have to muddle by on my lone 8800 GTX. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Thanks for the tip ElAurens http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I've been resisting an upgrade to my overclocked 7600GT for a long time - that 8800GT sounds like my patience has paid off http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Are there any preview screenshots for SOW? I'm hoping for at least SH4 quality graphics http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif (as well as a great game!)

SoW preview screens have been elusive.

Over at the 1C forum Oleg posted some shots in 3DMax of the Fiat Br20 bomber for BoB.

The level of detail of the new aircraft models will be astounding, and system taxing as well.

Most internal systems will be modeled. As will most if not all structural bits (stingers, spars, etc...) all to have a very complex damage model. It also appears that ground vehicles (military and civilian, as well as trains and ships) will have exterior modeling at the same level as the aircraft, and have working suspensions, and main gun recoil on tanks when they fire.

The rumor is that Oleg wants to have a comprehensive preview but UBI is saying no.

Thanks for the info ElAurens http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Sounds great! Any news on eye candy outside the aircraft? Land, sea, ground vehicles, buildings, explosions, lighting effects, etc?

ElAurens

Well...

Real dynamic weather is coming. Oleg has had one guy ( a little bird told me ) doing nothing but program clouds for the last coupe of years.

In general all eye candy will be brought up to a new state of the art, or so they say.

The screens of land vehicles look like Oleg is making an armour sim, honestly they look that good. And some guys from the German forum have made some amazing railroad models.

Lots of the IL2 community is getting edgy about it, but I really think that when released it will set the new standard by which all aircraft simulations are judged.

Excellent. I look forward to seeing it!

IL2 doesn't look too bad considering its age. I also hope that SOW take a leap forward (as I'm sure it will) with sound. I find the engine sounds in IL2 rather underwhelming...

Dang, we sure are gettin alot of mileage out of a video card burnin up. VG and AlEurens keep up the conversation on the SOW, your gettin me interested. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Speaking of Graphics Cards... Turns out the place I bought my computer, ripped me off and sold me a 256 for the price of a 512, but the drivers and the name in control panel said 512 so I believed him. Anyway, today I went to the store to buy some cds (so i could get a friend to burn me the patch)and I spotted out of the corner of my eye, a nVidia GeForce 8500 512mb DDR2 PCI Express (SLI compatible) for around 100 bucks. Not quite as lucky as the poof one but still. I was tempted to get a second one just to use the SLI option.

Reminds me of the time I handed the teller my paycheck of $100.00 and she handed me back $100,000! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

There must be a wishmaster in my vicinity 'cos I've just had me wish granted - SHIII can be viewed in glorious stereo 3D. Now for SH4 (can't get beyond the green screen with that one).

I wish I could put 2 8800 SLI, but in my L585P CASE I really can't... The GFORCE 8800 eats up the space of the upper 3 HD's slots... So it left me only with the bottom 2 slots to put both HD I have (320Gb and 500Gb Seagate SATA)....

8800 is HUUUUUUGE! :O

Btw, nobody liked my "Colder than penguin ***" joke? Snif snif... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
