Hi, I get flashes of white in my water, especially at the bottom of the screen and certain angles. And clues as to what setting fixes this? I have tried a lot of things. I have a EVGA Nvidia 285GTX card. I have everything on perfect in OpenGL mode. Water=3 I think.

Sometimes my game switches itself back to Excellent in the landscape detail option, and this is the result i get. Make sure yours hasn't gone back to excellent rather than perfect by itself.

Hmmm....You're right about it switching to Excellent mode but it's not giving me a Perfect choice even though I'm running OGL!! I wonder what happened to my Perfect?

Hey.
Before I had same switching problem, but something has fix it and it doesn't happend anymore. That's why I have to do a little search and because my control panel ain't in english.
Maybe drivers or some other settings fix it. Anyway it happend only, when game crash - although, back then I always wondering, why I can't get perfect mode anymore.
Answer was easy, but I always forget it, before I wrote it down.
In nvidia control panel, check that "extension limit = Off".
If I remembering it right, nvidia always change it back to On and that's the reason why couldn't get the perfect mode, even everything else was how they should be.
Another thing is to try "Water = 4".
Hope this helps.

Hi mate,
To make IL2 "remember" the perfect setting, change it in the config and safe the file. Then go to the config file's properties and set it to 'read only'.
An easier way to control IL2's graphics is to get an application such as IL-2 Manager or IL-2 Stab. I couldn't get the perfect settings before I got those apps.
If that doesn't solve the problem of the weird display behaviour, then you should be thinking about checking your drivers and GPU temperature. It's always best to have the latest drivers installed (properly). It's also a good idea to clean your computer of dust regularly. Especially in the summer when your system is more prone to overheating.
I'm having some bad driver issues which are really hard to solve, and with the temperatures rising this causes my game world to look a bit funky... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
In time it gets really annoying though!

Set my extension limit to off. But this did not help. Tried NDS_Camp's settings but no help. I get no option for perfect settings in the simple mode. The non-simple settings allow perfect on in the Landscape Detail option. But in the past I used to get the option for prefect in the simple mode. But excellent as high as it goes now.

Ok, I take that back, the extension thing seemed to fix my flashes on the water! ~Sweet~
But now to clear up the "perfect thing". Perhaps I remember wrongly but I was under the impression that when you go in the Hardware Setup and then into Video Modes, that if you go to simple mode you get a selection for "perfect". If I don't go into the simple mode I do indeed get a selection for "perfect" in the Landscape Detail menu option.
Is this the only place to select "perfect"? If so, then I am OK I guess because I get that option.

Dang it, I still have the white/gray flashes on water. Maybe my video card is overheating? It gets up to 180F when I play most any game with graphics.
I also still have the question about perfect mode too. If you read my question in my above post. I'm running with the Nvidia control panel settings I posted above too.

I guess it depends on the videocard, but 180F sounds pretty hot to me. My card starts struggeling at 155F. Didn't always used to be like that though. but combined with the driver issue...

"Anisotropic filtering" is controled by the conf.ini file, strongly recomend leaving it at Aplication Controled
Same thing for "Triple buffering" and "Force mipmaps", they should be at Aplication Controled
"Antialiasing - Setting = Use global setting(8XQ" I would go for 16xQ
"Antialiasing - Transparency = Multisampling", i would set it to Supersampling
And try to set "Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration = Use global setting(Multiple display performance mode)" to Single
I recomend the latest nVidia drivers 185.18, they seem to work best for me so far
Hope this combined with my Conf.ini section helps to boost your graphics and performance a bit.
Setting these settings and the Conf.ini should give you the best posible graphics for this game with an nVidia card, But do N|OT go into Video Setup, this might cause it to overwrite the Conf.ini with the "default" perfect settings wich are a lot less than the ones from my Conf.ini OpenGL section.

From your screen shot it looks like cloud reflections on water might be goofed up; try flying with no cloulds to see if the problem goes away (though by no means is this a fix, only a clue). The 'perfect' landscape setting enables 'shader model 3' effects, which produce nice translucent water with a shiny wet looking surface that also reflects images of other objects such as clouds, mountains, and aircraft. Looks to me like a driver/setting issue; I hope we're not seeing a trend here away from OGL with the latest products from nvidia.
It seems that 83c (180f) is pretty hot, though my gut reaction is that it's not your problem. I've found that the default fan settings are more geared towards noise reduction than for heat reduction. Cool thanks dudes! I'm going to download EVGA's OC'ing and fan control program called "Precision".
Gonna crank that fan up a few hundred RPM if available. Wish I had known about Precision over a year ago.

No, my monitor is not worthy, it's an old NEC CRT 17 incher from 2001. Although I make good money, being raised on a farm back in the midwest by parents that went through the depression, I'm very practical. And I won't spend money if it's not necessary. In many case I won't buy new stuff if the old is still working. This is the reason I still have gameport joystick and rudder pedals. And the reason I have my old CRT. If they'd die I'd replace them. But my CH rudder pedals refuse to die after 7 years running perfectly with no pot replacements. The CRT still has a great picture too. Just a bit smallish is all!!
I found it necessary to replace my rig because I was not satisfied by my E8400 processor and my 8800GT on PCI express generation 1 bus. I wanted PCI express 2.0 and a faster speed.
Oh, and I going to download EVGA's version of RivaTuner since my card is EVGA and Nvidia.

Well at least I hope you can drive 1600x1200 res at 100hz on that 17" CRT. And at that res on a 17" CRT who needs AA? (Good news: all CRTs eventually die)
Note that the fan controller tuning parameters are specific to the fan controller and not the tuning app, so the descriptions given in my link still apply. Enjoy, S!

Nice!! The default fan speed was 40 and I now have it on 80! Although I'm not sure what the numbers represent because 40 and 80 could not be RPM!?! It goes up to 100 but I find at 80 my new hottest GPU temp is 72C/161F instead of 82C/180F and that's a big difference. The fan makes too much noise at 100 and even 80 is noticeably more noise but it's not too bad since I use headphones anyway. The "auto" mode is what it was set to and apparently it never differed much above the 40 speed before. So maybe "auto" fan mode for EVGA is only going to increase the fan speed if it's about to burn up?
Who knows? I almost am convinced that EVGA and other manufacturers actually want your card to burn up or have a lessened lifetime. Kind of like planned obsolescence like the auto industry where they want your car to die sooner than it has to?

Found out it's neither a cloud reflection or an overheat problem. I flew a mission over the pacific with no clouds and I could still see white flashes. For the same mission, I ran my GPU fan at 100 ( top speed ) which yielded a max temp during play of about 150C. Versus the 182C max I got before I could speed up my fan at all, which I couldn't do until I downloaded the EVGA Precision tuner program. So it must be driver or settings.
And 32 degrees Celsius is 57.6 degrees cooler in Fahrenheit!

Hi, I think I have the same problem. Water=2 fixed it for me, but in looking for a better solution. I can't see any difference between water 2 and 4, i think water 4 is supossed to show aircraft reflections but I never saw it anyway.
I have a gforce 9600GT and I'm using forceware 177.66 .
I'm brazilian, sorry about any grammar mistake.

We have people from the US and England post in here regularly and they make more grammar errors than you did.
I think the difference between water=2 and water= 4 would be that water=4 has smaller wave patterns. Kind of like more little waves per square meter. Real life water looks more like water=4 to me. The wave action, which kind of looks like dimples on the water is finer with water=4.

There's also a bug with the aircraft textures, some blue things keep flashing on the plane. I installed the lastest driver and it doesn't fixed anything. I'm messing with the cong file but it's not working.

Versus the 182C max I got before I could speed up my fan at all, which I couldn't do until I downloaded the EVGA Precision tuner program. So it must be driver or settings.
And 32 degrees Celsius is 57.6 degrees cooler in Fahrenheit!
Those temperatures you mentioned are already in Fahrenheit, not Celcius. At least, I hope so!! 150C is waaaaaay too high! So with the fanspeed set to 100 percent (I believe those numbers are percantages of maximum fan speed) you got a temperature of 150F (65.6°C), which is pretty acceptable. Although it's much less likely now, let's not completely rule out overheating as the issue just yet... You still got the same display problem at this lower temperature?
One thing you could try is to set all the graphic settings that are controlled by your card (like anti aliassing and anisotropic filtering) to the lowest possible value (or highest performance). Also, try running at a lower resolution. This causes less strain on your GPU. See if the problem goes away with this setup.
This brings me to something else that was mentioned in this thread:

Antialiasing - Setting = Use global setting(8XQ)
Antialiasing - Transparency = Multisampling
Conformant Texture Clamp = Use global setting(Use Hardware)

Texture filtering - Trilinear Optimization = Off

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Why would you let 'the application' control any of those settings? Your videocard's drivers are made to control these things. Take care with anisotropic filtering (AF) though. In IL2 a very high setting puts a lot of strain on your system, especially the AF of the landscape. You can control the AF of the landscape as a specific setting in 'IL-2 Manager'. I strongly reccomend you get this application, because it lets you control some graphics settings that you can't control normally. You can play with these settings and see what is causing the problem.
Finally, did you alredy fix the problem of not being able to run 'perfect' settings? If you didn't, here's the same advice: get 'IL-2 Manager' (or IL-2 Stab). I promise you won't regret it... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I have been searching the web and there's a lot o people with problems in water 4, and I haven't found about anyone who fixed it. I don't think it's overheat. It's really cold here, my card is a cheap 9600GT, I'm running the game at 1280x960 without any AF or AA. Riva turner allways reports a GPU temparature of 36ºC.

Simply because there selected by the Conf.ini file and those settings dont have an Override setting for them in the nVidia controle pannel.
Setting (forcing) them in the nVidia controle pannel can cause glitches, extra stress on the GPU, and a lower FPS, and its not gonna improve the picture over the conf.ini settings i posted.
btw. i had Exactly the same problem as Mortoma and got it fixed...

Where in the config can we find those settings and what do the numbers behind them mean? I guess it's somewhere in this bit:
From the conf.ini:

TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=2
TexFlags.UseDither=1
TexFlags.UseAlpha=0
TexFlags.UseIndex=0
TexFlags.PolygonStipple=1

Yeah, theres a whole bunch of them in there + some of them can not work indepented from each other, if you active one you also need to activate a (some) other setting(s).
An example is this one: TexMipFilter=3 wont work with out TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1
Those set the maximum Anisotropic Filtering for the game.
Theres a bunch of them working like that where you need to set one or more settings to get a result.
There is also an error in that settings list:
TexCompress=2 will not work with out TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1

Sorry for going a bit off-topic here, but you say there's an error in my conf.ini? I should set TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt to '1'? What does that do?
Also, is it possible to make IL-2 NOT control setting which can also be controlled by your GPU (like anisotropic filtering and mip maps)?

TexCompress=2 cant work with out TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1, it enables S3TC texture compresion.
I really recomend not using the nVidia (or ATI) controle pannel settings for setings that can/are selected in the Conf.ini exept for ones that can be Enhanced or have an Override setting.
I did test it a while ogo (before 1946 came out) and even with settings like Mipmap filtering and AF turned off in Conf.ini i got less performance and i couldnt really tell if things did look better or not.
I would need to look it all up again wich they are, but like it said; its not as simple as turning one thing from =1 to =0, you need to change a couple of things to disable/enable sometyhing like AF or Mipmap filtering in there.
If you know german, here is a really good guide:

Thanks mate! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I really would expect to get better performance by using the GPU to control things. I'll have to make some changes me thinks. Or at least do some experimenting... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I know why there is an error in my settings. I was experimenting with some settings in IL-2 Manager and I forgot to change it back. Didn't notice any difference, really, but thanks for pointing it out.

Nice to hear about those DLL files, I'll give those a try since I have the blue flashes still. I was calling them white flashes earlier because they look more white to me.

Im running those DLL files also, they should help a lot, i had them about a year or less ago also and than they gave me a whole lot of extra problems, but with the latest nVidia drivers they seem ok so far.
Hopefully we get the 4.09m patch soon.
