I feel bad for this game. It is going to be good(for we the people who loved HOTP), but unfortunately it is releasing right after a truly great air combat game from the same genre. Though this game will most likely be the best arcade ww2 dogfighting game(Replacing BA2 for the title. Yeah, not a competition, lol!), the inevitable comparisons to IL-2 will bring the score down. Had this game released last year at this time last year, you can almost guarantee it would score higher.
Regardless, I'm still getting it because I LOVE air combat games, and I know this game will be FUN.
I hope more reviewers judge this game more against Blazing Angels than IL-2; even in arcade, IL-2 is a vastly different experience than what this game will be like.

I say buy BOTH.

I like how they praise the character acting, too. I don't think anyone has mentioned that yet here, but I really get a sense of the characters and their relationships through the voice actors.

Team Xbox gives HoE a 6.7

Ubisoft’s entry into the great WWII console fight-simulator derby of 2009 is not only our last contestant, but clearly the least. It would have been a lot better for the company to have released this game before IL-2 Sturmovik, since it might have capitalized on the four or five gamers that just couldn’t wait for the far superior game to come out. Even though the two games attempt to cover the same ground, you couldn’t find two games more diametrically opposed within a particular genre.

This game is complete bull,they have only bugs,and bugs and bugs,bugs under joystick,bugs
in the missions,bugs crash,for exemple in the mission firestorm the ways ask way the enemy figthers still in ther air,and the objetives misson show all obejetives complete. i only holpe the day the devenlopers realise the final version,because this beta one is a big pain!

Sorry Ubisoft, but I just bought this game on PS3 and in my opinion its a dud. Love air combat games, a fan of HAWX but HOE is a poor attempt at a flight sim, even at an arcade version. Will be selling this on Ebay soonest and reinvesting in IL2 or something else.

Little things like not being able to save at checkpoints, no HD graphics, no cockpit view, no basic HUD details (eg speed, altitude) all add up against this game. Overpriced and underdelivers. Score of 4 or 5 out of 10 is all it deserves.

The not being able to save between checkpoints is the killer for me. I've tried over and over again to shoot the mines in the second mission but each time I run out of available gameplay time before I can get them all. Then I have to go through the whole mission again just to get to those sodding mines.
Frankly I can't be bothered. I've uninstalled it I'm afraid.
I was really hoping for a spiritual successor to Crimson Skies but this is a long way off that mark.
