Seen it a while ago, and been in the tunnel :P. That tunnel under Lefortovo has two major problems. 3, actually.

1)It uaually has wind blowing right through it.

2) During winter time, black ice forms, no idea why. My guess is that somehow mositure and wind combine forces. Result- very slippery road.

3) There is a curve, as you may have noticed. High wind, slippery road and a curve are a recipe for disaster.

It's a rather scary place, from personal experience. Cars go way too fast, IMO...

I was wondering why so many cars simply lost control - as always with these types of accidents excessive speed is always the killer.

Thanks for the heads up on the characteristics of this particular tunnel http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Wow thats crazy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

They need to find a way to warm up that road.

Maybe a air conditioning system for the wintertime. It could blow warm air though the entire tunnel, preventing that ice can form.

This could cause some cool mini-Tornados on the other hand http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Maybe they already did this and thats the reason why the cars crash now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

That's GOT to be Italy! Italian drivers at their very best! Looks similar to the tunnels I've been through in Naples.

Insane! How can they keep the tunnel open in such a dangerous condition? They should at least put rock salt grit on the road like they do here in the UK (and presumably other countries) when icy roads are forecasted.

I think one of those drivers careering across the lanes is Mrs. Jambo... and she ain't skidding! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Here in the US, it depends where you live...up North, they use rock salt and sand...down South (where I live now), they spray a salt solution on the road before it snows (which doesnt help), then salt and sand afterwards. And then up in most of the mountains, you're required to use tire chains if snow is present.

For those who don't know, that's Russia, Moscow area. And for those who don't know the second fact, most former USSR drivers AND maintenance people don't give a damn. It's a sad truth that even a 12-yearold me realized when I left that place 6 years ago....

Yes, they spray sand on the roads, but all that does is create dust in the wind. Doesn't really help all that much. So next time you drive near Lefortovo- watch out for suspicious tunnels http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
