OK guys I'd like o hear it from you.

What was your favorite Heroe of the past Heroes games (Anyone)?

Why? What was the key element that made you like the heroe? Specific stats or background Story.

I'm drawing a blank on the name, but the Chain Lightning dude.

RexMund1
04-28-2005, 10:05 AM
Chain Lightning dude was Solmyr

my Favorite would obviously be the one named after me in Homm IV though I wish they hadn't made me the wrong class...

I loved the dungeon heroes in HOMM III
obviously the better ones like
Alamar, Jeddite, Deemer and Gunnar were cool..but they were generally all strong...with one or two exceptions.

I liked the idea of hero specialties so that different ones could really stand out at higher levels instead of all being exactly the same

ToxicMunkee

I LOVED Rebecca from Heroes I, but she didn't make the cut for Heroes II so I never made another character attachment again.

Does it bother me to have all completely new heroes? Nope.

He is not a regular hero, but I found Gelu to be a very interesting character.

From H3... I loved Gelu and his specialty. I also liked Kyrrae(I'm sure I'm spelling that totally wrong)and his logistics specialty a lot. Orrin and his archery specialy and Tyranis(sp?) and her cavalier specialty were favorites of mine also.

I loved the campaigns and the background stories on those heroes were great but the backgrounds on individual heroes never really played into single scenarios so I hardly noticed them.

As for H4 heroes, I loved the skill development a lot more but I missed the hero specialties which really made them stand out before.

Sorsha was always my favorite. No particular reason, I just always had good luck with her. Nothing fancy, just reliable. A shame she didn't look nearly as confident and steely-nerved in Heroes 4 as she did in 3.

I too would not be opposed to a whole new generation of Heroes. Most of all, I hope that each hero will be unique (more emphasis on the HEROES of might and magic that way) but all of their specialties/skill combinations will be useful. It's okay with me if some heroes are a bit stronger than others as long as it's not like it was in Heroes 3 where some were almost totally worthless compared to others who were disproportionately powerful.

I liked Grindan from the Conflux town. +350 gold a day really helped out in the beginning, and he starts with basic earth magic and the slow spell. Pretty easy to get him to expert slow in 2-4 levels.

I also liked Thant and Issa for the Undead side. Expert Animate Dead, mmmm, tasty!

I never understood why exactly, but I always found Saurug the Battle Mage and his gem bonus to be very helpful (for a secondary hero at least). That's why I used his mugshot as an avatar for several years.

Lich_
04-28-2005, 12:41 PM
I liked pictures more than specialties, perhaps that's why the secondary skills were lame if you would look from strategical side...

Homm3 : Nagash (just liked the look) and other would be Monere, Bessa, Septinroth and Rion

Homm4 : Sandro (as it seems), Rion, Wegg and Mayweda.

Gelu was indeed awesome. There was also a female necro with a boost to her necromancy skill. Very nice way to build up an early horde.

When it comes to Old Heroes, I think OZ is pretty good.

Did I misunderstand the question?

Ingame, I liked Gelu and Solmyr

AmeGem

I liked Ciele, Thant, Gelu and Solmyr, playing with Ciele most of all whenever I got to choose my own hero and town, and the others whenever Conflux wasn't available.

It's been so long.........and I'm so old it's hard to remember.

Gelu was very nice. There was also the dude that could convert mages. On the run-of-the-mill hero side, I tended to go for Solymr.

Neela. She's HOT!

er...well....to a genie, she is! I swear!

But seriously, I loved all the armorer heroes. Tazar from fortress is pretty darned good too. Although I also like to play Ritcher1 once in a while just to give him **** like eagle eye, navagation and mysticism. :O) NBL Ritch.

Wrathmar

Gelu for his speciality other than that, I did not get hung up on any of the heroes.

I was partial to Rion, even though his specialty was blah. I liked the Heroes 3 protrait of him better.

Crag Hack and Sandro.

I guess I'm just a fan of the classics. They both had very distinct personalities and storylines.

For specialites, I liked heroes with non-creature specific abilities (extra speed, logistics boost, even the artillery specialists).

wait a moment, he wasn't in the game ,right?

I like epic figures, like Crag Hack, Sandro, Gelu and others - not just because of good specialties, but because of their legendary status and special place in HoMM history. Those heroes should definitely be in Heroes V, I suppose...

The only problem is with Gelu, because he must be dead after the collision of Armageddon and Frost blades, isn't he?

I also miss Ironfist dynasty, that was so brutally slain by 3DO in HoMM4. Perhaps prince Nicolai Ironfist could be somehow revived for further developing of M&M history? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif This can be also done with Archibald, whom 3DO left on Clanker's island in MM7. Perhaps he could survive the Reckoning, living incognito among the settlers in Axeoth, and then become a lich, or something like that?
Generally, I think fans would enjoy the appearance of legendary charactershttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hummm. This thread might not really be of help to the developpment Team. So if you were Nival/Ubisoft and had to get a whole new array of Heroes, based on the success that was built around some of the old heroes ...

Name your favorite hero (past, present or future) and what makes him fun to play. Also come up with a runner up and a third place hero. Maybe at the end of this, we might even come up with a Top 10.

Or do you guys know of a place on any fan site where all the Bios of the past heroes is posted and if there ain't already a ranking of the Top 10 heroes? Might be inspiring...

Blackjack_77
04-29-2005, 01:57 PM
Not helpful? I think it's pretty clear from most of the posts in this thread that most people like heroes with unique and useful special abilities. Nival would be wise to take note. A list of hero bios, that's what I would wonder about the helpfulness of...

Real_King_Louis

Humm. BJ, I guess if I was a Designer in charge of creating the background story of Heores in H5 to insure fans are happy about the new heroes, just saying that we want heroes with unique abilities might not be all that useful.

Then again, I'm not known for coming across always clear from the first attempt.

What I'm trying to figure out is 'what' made some heroes stand out more. What is unique about their skill or background?

Blackjack_77
04-29-2005, 03:11 PM
For most people, it sure seems to me that unique special abilities (that no other hero had and made a very big and noticeable difference in the game) were what really made certain heroes stand out. For me, it was something a bit more intangible, like I said there've always been certain ones I just seemed to have good luck with and learned to identify with. As far as I know, the background information had very little to do with which heroes players liked the best. Crag Hack was very popular because of his powerful and unique special ability, while Sandro, who had been around just as long and ought to have had equal nostalgia value, was almost never used since his special ability wasn't particularly helpful.

That each hero had a unique background in Heroes 3 was a nice touch, but it's of relative unimportance. I think they should do whatever they want to there and not worry too much about how well it fits into the old storylines.

ToxicMunkee

I never paid any attention to hero backgrounds. I'm playing, so I'M the hero.

Special abilities: shake 'em up and spread 'em around. Developers can figure that out. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

Me too! but I will admit one of the nice things about H3 was the heroes having a 'specialty' and that is missing in H4. I don't miss the hiring super hero aspect and unlimited hero purchasing that came in H3 taverns.

To expand on my earlier response -

Crag Hack and Sandro, favoites because of their history with the series and the extended storylines they've had. I played with Blackdog in HOMM4 quite a bit, for some strange reason also. Aside from the heroes I played due to storylines, the specialist heroes such as these below:
Christian
Sir Mullich
Gunnar
Etc...

But, my all time favorite hero is Ivor. Now, I don't know his bio at all. I have a hard time remembering his specialty (elves?, archery?) - one of those I think. I don't know why I initially started playing him as a hero, and I really don't know if he was involved in any storylines ever. So, why is he my favorite?

Because once, in an MP game I sent Ivor out to scout enemy territory. He had some fast troops and had to retreat quickly. I hired him, sent him out again. He captured some mines, some resources, and so on, then retreated again. That one centaur he carries usually doesn't win many battles. So, *rinse and repeat*, I kept doing it over and over - and I still do in many MP games. Soon, chants of "Must Kill Ivor" or "Ivor will rule the World" were said when he took the field. Hire, steal, retreat, that's Ivor's specality.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that, I will remember a hero because of their specality, I will remember their background if they are integral to the storyline, and I will remember their exploits from in game experience, but for all the other heroes, I won't remember their Bio, past reading it once or twice and saying, hey, that was a cool background.

Anyway, hope this helps.

I think by this time the people on your sites have all discussed this point. Is it possible that you sum up the three old heroes most liked by the fans at your place ? And if possible, what, in each hero, made him unique.

Pitsu

Did some counting in Celestial Heavens Round Table forum (http://www.forumplanet.com/strategyplanet/homm/topic.asp?fid=5292&tid=1645695&p=1). The top runner is Sandro. Crag Hack follows and Solmyr and Gelu stand out as well. A reason for Sandro and Crag is certainly their long history in Homm games. Undeadness counts for Sandro as well. Solmyr and Gelu obviously need a Homm3 style kick-uss special to be truely welcomed in Homm5. Solmyr, of course, is a immortal being, thus more logic to bring back than Gelu or many others.

Not to mention that Gelu has stood in the midst of an explosion that destroyed a whole world http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Summing up favorite heroes is of course kind of hard, since there are so many to choose from. I'm certainly hoping that that question doesn't imply that we'll only get three heroes continuing into H5...

Lich_
06-20-2005, 02:25 PM
I would oppose bringing back Gelu, since he just died, likes people that or not, he died and period. It's like Homm3-Homm4 creators did with some heroes, when Aislinn turned into a female lich from a male vampire, what I really expect from heroes games is logic. So please no deadies... I would vote on heroes who were from the 1st parts till the last ones: Gem (she had some fountain of youth so she can live longer), Crag Hack (he should be an older human, but still strong), Sandro (Immortal), Yog (Also Immortal), Tarnum (Immortal, as I remember he was brought back to Wearjack to guide him and barbarians) and some others. Although we are not certain how this new world will be connected to Homm4... will this new land be a continent in Axeoth or a completely new planet ?

Errr Lich, I'll have to precise my question yet again I think http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

King Louis asked you what heroes you would like to see returning. Now what I'm asking is what the people on your forums thought of this, and what names are coming back most often. That is exactly what Pitsu did : do a summary of discussions and bring back the results http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

C_h_u_c_k_l_e_s
06-20-2005, 07:32 PM
From what I've heard on the various forums, the only unanimous choice for a returning hero is, of course, Crag Hack. In my opinion, he is a must. He's the only hero that's been in the entire Might and Magic series since the beginning (not just heroes). The others that most people have been leaning towards have been Sandro and Gem. If you're looking for only 3 heroes to be brought back....that'd probably be the best 3 to choose from.

The only other hero that has been in every version of Heroes is Luna. But she's never been the focus of a campaign before....so since you said only 3...I'd say ditch her. :O)

The discussion of Gelu and Solmyr is somewhat mixed. While they're both very popular from h3...Gelu is a somewhat "iffy" choice. He's only been a hero in the 2 expansion packs of H3 and that's it...not much of a history there imo. I'd definitely say to dump Gelu. While Solmyr is supposed to be an immortal, but his history is a bit sketchy as well. If you go back and look, he made his introduction to the Heroes series back in H2...as a white-human hero. Then in h3 he's a blue-genie? But regardless, he's still a solid choice.

I must say, in the past, NWC has included some heroes that are tributes to their long-time fans. For example, Astral from h3 is based upon Phil McCrum the webmaster from the old Astral Wizard site. I would really like to see some sort of tribute to the creator of the series Jon Van Caneghem (unless you want to look at Crag Hack as JVC's tribute...then nevermind). I know he and NWC are no longer connected to Heroes 5, but some sort of recognition for their long and hard work that laid the foundation for Heroes 5 should garner some tribute. Just a humble genie's opinion. :O)

I'm tired of Crag Hack. Shouldn't he want to retire by now? He's been fighting an awfully long time. I say it's time for a new generation of heroes. Sure, some people would cry about it, but some people will nitpick certain aspects to death no matter what you do.

Venom, I would believe this thread is up to date.

I'm sure up to the last minute, the developpers can always throw in a new hero or two.

I believe the importance for the developpers here is more what makes those heroes so special so they can recreate new ones in the image of the old ones.

Or maybe descendants...

OK, so the thread in heroworld started. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I bet on Crag Hack, Sandro, Gelu and Solmyr. They are just too hot, so many people in heroworld forum use them as their avatar.

Just a guess, we'll see.

Members in Guardian's Grove decided the following:

The first and with the most votes:

Sandro

Second place is taken by Solmyr

Crag Hack takes the 3rd place after the struggle with Mayweda, however the votes were almost equal so I can make a conclusion that they are both equaly liked.

As long as there are no specialities I don't care which hero returns.

I played Heroesd 4 quite a lot (although I prefer H3) and it made no difference to me in H4 whether I could choose my beloved Mephala or hero xyz.
Sometimes I chose the one with the best pictures, but most of the timees all of them were ugly anyway, so I didn't care.

If there's no speciality I don't need hero names. Just call them Knight A, Knight B,..., Heretic A, Hertic B... and so on with the option to rename them.

However, that's just my personal meaning.

result from heroworld of china:

multi-player fans:
1. Luna - very good specialty
2. Tazar - same reason

H3 fans:
1. Sandro - cool, powerful
2. Hack - old friend
3. Adelaide - beautiful girl

H4 fans:
1. Emilia Nighthaven - beautiful, attractive story
2. Gauldoth - cool face, good story

This once again confirms what I already thought.

When keeping a special hero for the sake of nostalgia, you should keep a hero who was liked because of legacy or nostalgia.

If 3DO had made an ugly hero with no background story and a "smite everything" special ability, he would still be a popular hero. However, I assume Heroes 5 is not going to be giving the HOMM3 Heroes the same abilities, so this argument is pretty worthless.

For this reason, I'd still say Sandro, just because of the legacy that he left (although I wouldn't mind seeing Adelaide return as well).

I opened a thread in my community asking for favourite heroes some days ago. I have counted the number of times each heroe is mentioned. These are the results.

The leading group

Sandro 9
Solmyr 6
Crag Hack 4

Spanish players don't seem to be very different from the rest. Mister Sandro, Solmyr and Crag Hack are winners everywhere.

After them we have this good old warlock:
Alamar 3

With two votes, heroes from H3:
Gelu 2
Melodia 2
Tazar 2
Jeddite 2

With the same number of votes, comming from H2:
Archibald Ironfist 2
Halon 2
Sarakin 2

And those only mentioned once, (from H3):
Yog 1
Kilgror 1
Malekith 1
Deemer 1
Mephala 1

And from H2, (or before):
Zam 1
Lord Haart 1
Agar 1
Barok 1
Kastore 1
Jezebel 1
Charity 1
Lord Kilburn 1
Vatwana 1
Gem 1

And now some comments. People seems to like H3 heroes for their speciality. Solmyr, Deemer, Tazar, Alamar or Jeddite are good examples. But people like some heroes too due to their charismathic personality and involvement in the games story. Sandro, Crag Hack, Gem, Archibald or Gelu are good examples.

When people mention H2 heroes it's ussually due to their portrait. Zam, Agar, Sarakin, Halon, Vatwana or Jezebel are perfect examples. This could be a good hint too about how people would like portraits for new heroes. Fantasy like portraits a la H2 seems to be the favourite ones http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

I hope this helps.
