Hi guys,

We were supposed to release this on the PoP blog but it's still broken so we decided to release it here instead. I hope you enjoy the read!

UR

How to make a trailer in seven easy steps:
<LI>Concept
The first thing decided upon for any trailer we make is the overall concept of the trailer, what's the purpose behind it, what we want to show and how we want to show it. In order to fit with the game's artistic mood, it was clear from the beginning that we needed to have beautiful trailers with strong music to really move people when they watch it.

<LI>Music
Once we have an overall concept and idea of where we want to take the trailer, we then need to select the music. Music is one of the most important pieces to a trailer as all the shots require editing to fit with the musical transitions as well as giving the trailer a mood. We test a variety of different styles and genres to work out what fits best for our concept, often going through dozens of different bands until we find something that works well.

When we have something that works well for us we then approach the artist in order to sign the track for the trailer and in this case we're using Sia Breathe Me.

<LI>Storyboards
At this stage we work out what we want to show in a trailer and when. Through these storyboards we create an overall rough structure and timeline and then see how well things will flow together. This process involves going through the timings over and over to find out what works best both for the concept and getting the music working well together.

These storyboards give a near-final idea of what's going to happen and when inside the trailer, all linked to the music. At this time we finalise what sort of transitions we show between key moments of the trailer and how to keep a strong flow throughout.

<LI>Captures
It's interesting to note that up until this stage we've not actually captured any in-game footage everything so far has been hand written, reworked, rewritten, talked/argued over and discussed at length. When we reach this stage we're now able to start capturing all the gameplay sequences required to build the trailer we've been planning.

A key tool for this is what's called the "Capture Camera". This is a free roaming camera made for our games for the specific reason for taking screenshots and capturing gameplay footage at specific angles. The Capture Camera is an extremely useful tool as there are simply some shots which are impossible to capture without and it gives our video editors a large degree of creative control with the trailer. This camera can be managed through a separate controller so you we can sometimes find we have to have one person playing the game whilst another changes the camera angles, in order to get the shots we want.

Once we've captured the gameplay footage we edit it together as per the Storyboard timings and then see how things work with this new footage. This is a key step to making a trailer as if something worked on paper but doesn't work when you have gameplay in there we need to rework it.

<LI>Final Captures
This is one of the most time intensive steps to making a trailer as you have to capture gameplay footage exactly as you want it for the final trailer. This involves setting up very specific shots and making sure that it's as perfect as you can make it so it looks like a final trailer. Sometimes we can spend hours capturing shots only to move the camera just slightly which ruins all that work as you end up with different perspectives.

At this point you see the trailer truly come to life with the music and gameplay footage working well together and you have a feel of what the final trailer will look like.

<LI>Audio Mix
Once we have a final captured version of the trailer with all the final shots in there, we give the audio studio the trailer to perform the voice-over, sounds FX, music and audio mix. Their job is to create and mix everything together so it works well and you can hear everything in an optimal way.

<LI>All Done
Then our final step is to release the trailer for the world to see. To compliment this short look at how trailers are made, we made a version of the Tokyo Game Show trailer which has an alternative ending to the version you've already seen. You can watch this by clicking through on the following links and please let us know what you think of it on the forums.

I can't remember the first trailer, but this one is pretty good, although the music still ruined it for me. I really don't like that song. Other than that, that was one big huge guy at the end. Looks like it would be really fun to play. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Razz is that trailer in the game?

I don't want to spoil things.

Sorry, I should have said it's the Tokyo Game Show trailer with an alternative ending, not the game itself http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

i love that music...think i prefer the other ending though :P
still good.

when you say its not the game itself...im confused.

isn't the trailer taken from in game footage...from one of the 'bosses in the game..(the warrior), just with different camera angles?

UbiRazz

The trailer is in-game footage but is not an alternative ending to the game itself.

Me too.. The music is more interrelated with the video, and I like the scene where the prince is holding Elika from the waist, that was cute http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Very nice trailer, I do think UbiMont are the best in the business in doing trailers :P
Seriously http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Still, I think the music should be different, why not a game soundtrack (yeah, the ones from the game itself).

Ubirazz the title is a bit misleading,
when i first clicked on it i thought it is a
step by step guide to create a trailer yourself http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

UbiRazz
10-28-2008, 07:02 AM
Well if you want to follow these steps then you'll be able to make a trailer yourself, yes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That's neat that there's a controller specifically for a camera intended to capture footage.

While the new trailer certainly made me appreciate the sprawling depth of the new environments (man they look fantastic!) the constantly panning camera drove me crazy. I had to keep looking away for fear of motion sickness (and I don't get motion sick easily).

I bet making trailers and things with in-game cinematics makes it much easier than requiring pre-rendered CG cinematics. No fuss with another department and you can get all your captures in the game itself ^^

I don't think this song really suits POP. It sounds way too commercial, and unoriginal.

Wasn't Inon Zur the main composer for this POP?

What's with the crappy song?

Very nice trailer, I do think UbiMont are the best in the business in doing trailers :P

I think that's the point. I doubt they're gonna use this music in-game, but the song sounds commercial, which is gonna be nice on the ears for a majority of people, and all that advertising shizz...

I like this song, just not in PoP >.>

Razor_Ace

So?

In the E3 trailer for the old POP3 they used an original song which was never used in the game later on. Promoting a game with a pop song really doesn't bring out the originality.

Sandwarrior1990
10-28-2008, 05:00 PM
I never said it did. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
It's like adverts on TV using popular music at that particular moment, Ubi just picked a song.

Remember, Assassin's Creed's main trailer included a song by UNKLE, which was never in the game. None of the in-game music sounded like it at all.

Razor_Ace

This song could have been better suited for a fan vid, depending on the fan's musical preference of course, but as far as credibility goes, a unique pop oriented piece would work better.

Never really saw that many trailers for AC. I was very careful not to learn too much about the game.

hey Razz I like the seven steps to making a Trailer, including this one, it's one of my favorite trailers. Btw i have a question for you and it relates to those steps.

You see I'm majoring in digital media production at my school and we work hard on pre-production, production and post-production. Though a lot of work goes on in pre-production like storyboarding, script writing and etc. But the question that I was going to ask is, once you get your storyboards finalize and approved and get the in-game footage for the game. What if the trailer didn't come out as planned through the storyboards? Do you guys go back and re-capture different shots to replace those that you thought to be good at one point?

When i work in groups I like to storyboard all of my projects, but I have had times were the shots I wanted didn't come out or work out as I had planned. So we go back and reshoot or we just re-edit the video to its done. Though it all depends because we have to meet deadlines and sometimes there just isn't enough time to go back and re-shoot things.

I know this is a non-related POP question but I was just wondering how you handle these situations.

UbiRazz

Each stage is a stage gate process where we review and approve the video in that context so if the video isn't what we want it to be we need to work out why and find out ways to resolve it. There's no point in putting something out there we're not happy with so if it's a case of recapturing a bunch of stuff or rescripting a sequence then that's what we we'll do.

It's a very fluid process with trying loads of stuff, of which some will work and some won't, and then trying to make the best of what we've got.

For everyone else, the music itself is the perfect piece for this sort of trailer because of the style of the game and the 'feel' of the music. You may not like it but its exactly what it needs to be.

I would love to see your own fan videos with different music though! Please post them on here http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That'd be a bit hard as there isn't enough video footage to make a vid. I made 2 fan vids for the previous trilogy, but I think I'll need a bit more for this one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Not enough footage? There's a positive slew of footage over here: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/6739.html

Razor_Ace
10-29-2008, 08:51 AM
Yeah I see that, but by Fan video footage, I'm usually referring to cutscenes which would normally contain story elements, depicting the key moments in the game.

Thanks for answering that question Razz.

i don't know about the music sounding "too commercial"... but rather... i don't know... that song just keeps rubbin me the wrong way. it doesn't feel like a complete song... and the singer is just... ugh... blah. it really bugs me when watchin the trailer. i like music that similar to that vibe of very mellow and stuff... but i would have picked a different artist that would have mixed far better. that's my personal opinion. on top of all that, i just don't feel the song fits with the trailer at all. it feels forced with all the slow motion. i feel like the song is slower than the motion, despite being slowed down. really all i'm doin is lookin at it for the visuals with the music turned off for fear of distraction. anyway, props over all... just not feeling the music. i would have chosen maybe someone like rachael yamagata if you're goin for that vibe but with a better choice of songs, or even a more traditional persian vibe from niyaz... which i've been sayin over and over... get them on the soundtrack. i'm sure they'd totally do a song or two.
