I'm having mine pulled here in the next couple of weeks. Anyone have any stories they'd like to share? I want to know what I'm up against here. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Yea I had mine removed all at the same time as well. Melonie, its not fun. I mean, there is no way to sugar coat it.

First of all, for the first hour or so after I had mine pulled, they bled ALOT. When I got home and attempted to change the guaze in my mouth...it bled like...a river. I mean, I know thats gross, but thats the truth. Make sure the bleeding has stopped before doing that.

Also, for a few days after, it felt like someone had wired my jaw shut. I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to take a bite of food! I was litterally eating soup and apple sauce through a straw for a few days. Have plenty of apple sauce available or something like Slim Fast that has vitamins in it. (Slim Fast does have vitamins, doesn't it?)

The last thing was the pain medication was a knock out..literally. I slept for 16 hours after my first dose...whoa!

LOL You shoulda seen me during the surgery.

Only one of my wisdom teeth had come through the gun so they actually had to cut into my gums to remove the other 3. They put some contraption in my mouth to hold it open. I looked like something out of a Marilyn Manson video. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

oh yeah the bleeding part...

It depends on whether they've got to do surgery to remove them or not. Mine had grown all the way out, but they removed them because they were crowding the other teeth. It was like pulling teeth normally, so it wasn't too bad. They pulled both on one side of my mouth first, and did the other pair on a follow up visit. They didn't leave holes in my gums either; they put stitches in, and that's what has to be kept clean. That's actually why they did them two at a time, so I could chew on the other side of my mouth until the stitches healed, and keep food particles away from the stitches.

Are wisdom teeth worse than any other kind of tooth? I've had one (Only one!) cavity filled, which isn't bad at all, and up to four teeth pulled at once. None of them were that unpleasant, other than the novicane shot. I never liked needles.

Not in and of themselves, no. The reason most people wind up having to get them removed is that most people don't have room in their jaws for the extra teeth. In fact, for a lot of people, they don't come in correctly and they wind up having to cut into your gums to remove them.

Years ago, I had all of my wisdom teeth pulled. At first, I turned down gas, but quickly changed my mind. After having them pulled (the dentist even gave them back to me), I bled a bit and even had one stitch fall out. I recommend eating soft foods like mashed potatos and pudding for a few days until your jaw stops hurting (it can be sucked between teeth and not chewed).

Rinse your mouth out with warm saltwater several times a day. The saltwater will help your gums heal faster and help keep infection down.

Edited to permit a rather innocuos word to be shown in it's entirety instead of having a bunch of *s in the middle of it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Poor Melonie. I hope we haven't scared her. LOL

Melonie, I think you get the jist tho. It's not pleasant. Espicially if you have to have them surgically removed as I did. But it is overcomeable. Take as many drugs as they will give your during (lol), make sure to have lots of liquid available for sustinance, make sure to keep things from getting infected, and stay as doped up as possible for about the first week after. LOL

Best advice I can give you

I always do that. After any form of dental work, ALWAYS take a painkiller! It may not hurt at first, but it probably will later. That happened when I first got my braces during the fifth grade, when I got "spacers," little slides of plastic that shove teeth apart. It even hurt to eat jello after that!

O S*** spacers I OMFG my buddie got that he sead it killed im going to get them next year I think I still need to see if I need them.

O Nooo... I think we scared Melonie awey.

Yeah, take the painkillers. They gave me Percodan when I had mine pulled. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Jackie Fiest

hehe I managed to avoid spacers.

I was born with a severly bad overbite, and had to actually have 4 teeth pulled before I got my braces so my teeth would have space to move back. I had to do the whole rubber band thing, as well as that nasty tasting wax stuff to put over the metal of my braces to keep them from scratching the inside of my mouth.

OMG I have nightmares thinking about it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

It wasn't as bad as my friends sister tho. Her dentist had to actually break the bone in the roof of her mouth...yeouch!

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Yikes Jackie! That sounded like a royal pain!

Unfortunately, mine will have to be surgically removed because they are ingrown, still in my gums. My mouth is kinda small I guess, and I looked in the mirror once to see if my wisdom teeth could possibly go through, but I really don't see that happening! There's not enough space at all! My teeth are really, really straight, but I guess my mouth is just kinda small. lol.

Well I'm gunna finish reading the otherp ost now. Just thought I'd reply to Jackie's right away, that sounds horrible! I'm gunna stock up on applesauce and soup, that's for sure!

im repeating white nights advice "glass of warm water with two tablespoons of salt stirred in,drink and swill around the mouth - for goodness sake donr swallow you will vomit,it tastes disgusting but it really does harden the gums up {the area where the tooth is needs hardening]

i had mine pulled also. the first time was not too bad but when i went to have the others pulled, the stupid dentist did not numb it very well ( i could feel him pulling on the tooth) and it hurt like h*ll and i was in tears. i told him i could feel pain and he did not beleive me, anyway after he pulled the teeth i got sick to the stomach and had to throwup at the dr's office i guess it was from the shock of felling the pain.

so i guess the best offer i can give you is to make sure they numb it very well. and to say good luck!!!!

I got spacers this year. It was so hard to eat stuff! Man, it killed to even have like a bite of a cookie!

Worst of all is the expander. In the first two hours after getting it, I felt like dying.

I have only had one filling and I flipped out so bad I was crying the whole time. I started to pass out and I bit down on the drill and now my tooth is SUPER sensitive! I was trippin out the whole time because I was having flashbacks from after I had my bike accident (I lost 1 and a half teeth, I had to have a root canal and so that tooth is dead) so I was basically in shock and I was so scared. Story of my life.

y'all doing a great job of scaring melonie to death

if you feel pain as he removes the teeth simple push him off,a dentists is a doctor not a butcher so will put in more novacaine

its nowhere near as bad removing a tooth as its being portrayed here,i declined novacaine for a filling so the dentist drilled into my tooth unanesathised,i took a fair amount of pain before finaly telling him to put the novacaine in so you will be fine melonie

....considering you wont want to brush your teeth.

you will want to use a disinfectant mouth wash ment for open wounds (not the kind of stuff that will sting or with a flavor) That will be the best way to prevent serious problems.

I had impacted wisdom teeth.

I got them removed about two years ago.

To be honest, it wasn't that bad for me. I think I took one pain killer the whole time.

I was up plaing MoHAA within 3 hours. lol

I got a special ice packet to wrap around my head. It was niice

The story of my wisdom teeth:
About a year ago it was. My appointment was scheduled for a Friday afternoon so I didn't miss many classes. The only thing that hurt at all during the entire visit to the office was when they put the IV in, and that just pinched a little. They put me to sleep and I woke up something like three hours later, not sure of where I was, unable to feel my mouth, and in complete euphoria.
I stumbled into the wheelchair, somehow got from the room to the car, and arrived home (mom drove) slightly more lucid. I made it to the couch and passed out. The euphoria lasted over the weekend because I was on narcotic painkillers. Not taking the painkillers after that, I became much more lucid and turned to Advil, and that worked pretty well to quell the pain.
My jaw was pretty sore for the next week, and it hurt to eat anything solid. I remember a lot of oatmeal though. And gatorade.
After the first week, it was pretty good though - not much pain, the stitches fell out, and my lip healed up mostly. Now, for the moral of my story:

Don't chew your lip or your tongue or anything. Just because it doesn't hurt, doesn't mean you're not chewing through the skin and meat.

Overall, the experience wasn't half bad. Now you go have fun at the oral surgeon's office now, you hear?

Thank ya dear. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif haha. It's ok, I'm not half as scared as I sound. I'm definitely worried though. Oddly enough. I've had two surgeries that were a lot more serious before when I was younger and I wasn't even slightly scared. I have no idea why I would be nervous now. Oh well, I'll be fully prepared, so everything should turn out fine.

Oh, and Tampini. You went beserk over a filling? lol I'm not making fun of you or anything, it just seems kind of funny. I just had a filling done last week, that's when my dentist looked at my Xrays and discovered my impacted wisdom teeth. Fillings don't bother me at all though, I just layed back and let them do what they needed to do. Didn't bother me. I know a whole lot of people are afraid of the drills though, so it's not like you're a wimp or anything.

I've actually had a couple of fillings recently. Never had a cavity before in my life until a few months ago. I brush my teeth at least twice a day (usually more), but I absolutely love candy! My favorite being things like Skittles, Starburst, the kinds that stick to your teeth more. So yeah... That's why I needed fillings. lol

Just found out today that my wisdom teeth will be pulled tomorrow morning at 8:45. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I thought it would be at least a week away, but I guess I was wrong. I'm gunna stock up on all of my supplies tonight. I especially want to have those hands free ice packs. Can't have anything interfering with my video game playing time! I figure that's what I'll be doing nonstop. Nothing but playing video games and sleeping. I have an online friend who is having surgery today, so I'm going to get online to talk to her too, but other than that it's all gaming baby! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif When I think of it like that I actually look forward to getting my teeth pulled! haha! I play games on a daily basis(unless I'm incredibly busy), but I never have as much time as I would like. Now I will!

Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. I know one thing, and that is that I do not want to be put to sleep! Hated it the other two times, so I'd much rather have laughing gas or something. I take pain exceptionally well, my doctors and dentists have always been impressed with that. I'll probably worry about the surgery up until the process begins. From then on out I'll be my normal "fearless" self. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I had mine removed a few years ago. It wasn't so bad. They didn't put me to sleep or anything...they injected novocaine into my gums. They gave me a second option, but I don't remember what it was. By far the worst part was the price. Then after that was my fear of a dry socket (which didn't happen). Then after that the hassle of cleaning the holes. The operation itself was a piece of cake...only took like 20 mins for all 4, 2 of which were impacted. I would try to stay as inactive as possible for the first day or so, because I noticed when I was more active my mouth would bleed...probably related to the increased heart rate or something. I didn't find the pain to be great enough to take painkillers or anything...I just went home took a nap. Like someone else said, be sure to keep those holes clean.

I had a lot of fun after that the Vicodin, and the fact that I looked like a chipmunk for about 2 weeks. Seriously I was 13 when I had them out in Feb. 2005 and I was awake the whole surgery the worst part was when my glasses got hit with the blood, but other than that I was O.K. didn't have a lot of pain just limited mobility in my jaw the gause were soaked within 2 minutes. You'll spit blood for a good hour and the firt day you brush your teeth will suck, try to have the surgery done at 4:00 and get someone to drive you home get soft pillows and fall right to sleep after 30 minutes, other wise you'll choke on your own blood. When you wake up try to find a water bottle, fill it with warm water (deffinitely not hot) and pop a pain pill squirt the water directly to the back of your throat or on the pill so you don't have to swallow wait awhile and then you'll be able to salt water gargle (gargle 4-5 times a day or as directed) and brush your teeth, take 1-3 days of work and you should be good enough to go back try to get them removed on the weekend. Whatever you do don't have one or two pulled at a time even if they haven't errupted yet have them taken out in their marble state for better results.

Hope I helped.
