Im thinking of setting up a two computer network so both my son and I can play online.
If we are both playing farcry(he will have his own copy !) will my performance be worse than usual.
If so do I have to look at upgrading my broadband.I am currently on BT normal broadband
Any advice would be great

you will each have to have your own play discs. if you dont have broadband you will lag even on your own lan.
definatly get a high speed connection.
make sure your pc 's see each other on your network.

If you are hosting a LAN game through your router (I'm assuming you have one from your description) then the best you can do is start the game server from your more higher powered computer. Any typical router will handle the bandwidth, that's probably not going to be your issue.
I've played with my system (Athlon 64 3200+, 1 GByte RAM, 80211.g wireless) as a game server and played on it as well, doesn't do too bad until you get above 3 or so players.
Hard to give you any more advice without some system and network specs.
