View Full Version : How long do you think you'll last?

Back in my Silent Service 2 days, I usually managed to play the war from start to finish. At the same time, however, I was a 7 yr old kid playing on the 'normal' setting. A few years later with C:AOD on full realism I could usually last until after Operation Drumbeat, at which point in time I would get bored and stop playing for several months (then my dad would uninstall the game, deleting the saved game).
How long do you think you'll last until you're sunk? I'm guessing I'll make it to 1943. After that, my favorite torpedo boat tactics become suicidal and some escort will probably do me in.

Hopefully the game, and I’m just about to order it (yes I’m slow) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif will be so realistic that everyone will have a good chance till the technology tiped the scales and then its really down to your first mistake.
I just hope there is a realistic damage model so you can get beat up and limp home.
I’ve not bought a game for a few years that's blown me away, it might be I’m getting older but I hope this is the one, total immersion in the deep blue sea……

If they modeled the detection capability of the ASW units like they did initially in SH2 we are all pretty much dead meat. They gave them way too much ability. The escorts could see through the water like it was glass. They forgot about variability in equipment, experience of operators, environmental conditions, weather, and just plain random bad/good luck. These are hard things to code but lets hope we see these effects.

I never survived a war in silent service or aces of the deep http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Im just too gung ho. I will attack a convoy even if its heavily defended, and 3 or 4 destroyers would chase me and finish me off. I also used to attack in shallow water (40 metres or less) and die lots lol. Being the sort of person who restarted when dead i never made it to the end. Infact i think the longest i ever lasted in aces of teh deep was to 42 or early 43. I used to get massive tonnage though, lots of heavy ships ect (i used to only sink 10,000 tonners or more, sometimes coming home with torps because i ran low on fuel being so picky lol) but i ended top tonnage master lol, but dead http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
This game i will play as i used to the first campaign i do, but try to keep alive. If i dont make it then after that i will do a really safe campaign where i aim to survive rather then get lots of tonnage!
I look forward to it being the equal or above aces of the deep in challenge level. I want the destroyers to paste me!!

To that I say what one of my Aquaintances in the Polish navy told me...
"Use thermals, run slow, let them come to you, and fire spreads, then pray"
On a side note, this guy SANK a US aircraft carrier in wargames in the North Atlantic, in a Foxtrot, right after being made the butt end of a joke by a German sub commander who was detected and forced to surface within 2 hours.

Cool!
I am good, or was good. I just take lots of risks, and eventually your going to get caught out. Its statistics. I think its wicked really because its realistic, hardly any commanders survived the war no matter how good!

well, if you're coutious and the sim is historically accurate.. you'd stand a good chance of surviving till around 1942.. after that, you better be more than coutious! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If I make it to mid-1943, I will survive the war, because I will take unofficial retirement in south Argentinia!

Forget Argentina, fly up a flag of Neutrality and put down anchor on Molokai (Hawaii). If anyone says your a German look bewildered and start talking gibberish (that doesn't sound German).

You guys are nutters!! lol
You remind me of a guy i saw on discovery i think it was. He had built a cockpit in his garage of a fighter, and he went and put the whole outfit on and sat in the cockpit to play the games, he had all the switches of the plane connected so they all worked and he was flying round. At first i thought it was pretty cool, then i noticed he was heavy breathing in the big turns ect, and i thought "wait a second he isnt really pulling G... whats going on...
He had other friends all round the world who "played air traffic control for a microsoft flight type game" all in real time. These guys had poor wives sat in the house going "yeah i dont know what to do with him, he dissapears for hours on ends!" heheh all very funny.
I think im more amazed then anything, i cant grasp how anyone could play the game in real time. One reason being having the time! Will you leave it running while you sleep ect?
Fascinating!

I'll probably save where I am (if possible) at and then continue on when I play again.
If it takes 2 days to get to the 1st waypoint, so be it.

Imagine if you had all the time in the world, and you left it running and tried to live it. So if you got a contact at night in bed, the volume would scream ALARM!!! Flughafen!! (i never got that in aces of the deep, i thought flughafen was airport...) and you would have to jump out of bed and hit the crash dive key.
All bleary eyed and heart racing. The sleepily avoid the attack, then set course and go back to your captains bunk hehhehe. That would be quite cool actually for say a couple of days for a laugh or something.

Dammit, stop! Your making me want the game now! The waiting is hard these days http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
I don't think I'm quite nuts enough yet to play an entire campaign in real time tho...got respect for guys like Ark & Shan http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
Oh, I think I'll survive pretty long, but at risk of getting a desk job before the end...Im cautious to a fault sometimes.

Well when I played an early version a couple of months ago I lasted ages. Didn't hit anything but I lasted ages. And once I realised my sub was going backwards and how to surface I even saw a few ships before diving down so fast I destroyed my sub. Manuals are for loosers!

Play real time are you serious? By the method of saving when you can't play it would take far longer to complete a partol than it would in real life even (way to state the obvious). If you don't mind me asking, are you at home without a job or something? Sorry if that was answered in the time off thread.
My hats off to you mate. Just try to keep your cool after your computer unexpectedly crashes and you have to load your last save point from 14 hours before. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Knowing my luck I'll hit the harbour wall when moving out for the first time and sink.
Since I'll be playing on full realism I'll be expecting to see water pouring out of my monitor screen....And if it ain't salty I'll be wanting a patch!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

I never made a whole war campign in Aod,
When I survived enough, starting early in the war, I always accepted the option for retirement to a staff duty.
Starting later, I never survived for long time.

I give myself 10 min flat before I accidentally bury my boat's nose in the silt just off the coast of France! Another 15 before the crew wedge in the torpedo tube. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

ill try to last as long as possible, no risks, take the crews fatigue into account when deciding a route, play it in real time, and full realism. ahhh who am i kidding, if i do that, i wont even last out of La rochelle ( if were ever based there http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )
