View Full Version : Lots of Questions... any help appreciated

Sorry if these have already been covered or may seem dumb, but am new to all this. I owned SH3 (SH2?) a few years ago but never got into it very far.
Just got SH4 Gold and have been playing on lowest reality levels to try to learn basics.
Is there any file I can edit to disable the Enter key from firing the torpedo and only have the space key fire? I keep accidentally hitting it instead of the ' key for Rudder Amidships.
I had the small screen working that shows the torpedo's when launched, etc., but it's gone now and I can't figure how to turn it back on again. The V key doesn't do it.. just missing something here... probably my brain.
On the surface I can't get the radar to come on, do I have to be at general quarters?.. that wouldn't seem right..
I also can not get the attack periscope to work, it goes up and down but it's always dark, while the observation one seems to work fine.
Is there some key combo to go directly to 1x time compression instead of having to repeatedly hit the number pad - key to slow down from high time compression?
Lastly, has any one published a good book on SH4 with details on all the controls, navigation, fireing setup, etc.? If I remember right, the paper manual that came with my old SH3 (maybe it was SH2?) had a lot more info then the digital one I got with this SH4 Gold edition.
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but these would help greatly for now, thanks,

Welcome to the PTO.
Q-1: No, not an easy fix to switch the fire key but there is an alternative. You can skip manual control of the rudder by looking through either scope, the TBT, or binoculars and hit the =/+ key and the helmsman will take up that heading.
The TMO mod fixes the enter key as fire control bug, when ever you're ready to graduate Sub school.
Q-2: The small action screen can be turned on and off from the options menu. It's been so long since I played stock, I'm not sure if the change will stick by changing it in the options menu accessed with the ESCAPE key. Alot of the actual game seetings must be accessed from the options menu in your home port office. "Bookshelf on the left side of the room" Try both methods.
Q-3: Radar doesn't become available until Aug of '43 and must be installed while in port when it does. The artwork is in the conn but is non-functional.
You do have SD radar for spotting inbound air traffic. This set is controlled passively by the crew and has no physical interaction with the player other than raising and lowering the antennae. This feature is available with the TMO MOD only and not found in stock.
Q-4: Attack scope can be raised and lowered several ways.
1; PAGE UP PAGE DOWN keys.
2; Use the sub menu for the scope/s in the orders bar.
3; CTRL + PGUP/PGDWN key combo. Which simulates the crew controlling the action.
4: Backspace key will drop the Time Compression to 1. Along with Activation of the external camera. Going to the map, attack map, crew, damage control, inventory, and control room screens will drop TC down to 8.
Q-5: Right here on this very forum. LINK (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6421019045/m/9681012797)

These are all very good questions, and I too would wish some of the more learned would help out....I'm in the same boat with you (metaphorically speaking... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif), except for the scope. I've never had that happen...Are you perhaps going too deep, and the scope can't break the surface..??
Edit..Oops...Wolferz beat me to it....

When you're "In Game", hit the F1 key and you'll see a set of directions pop up, which cover a myriad of subjects with regards to the operation of your boat. These directions include quite a number of short-cut keys to operate different features. Hope this fills-in some of the blanks. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Start at this tips page. Make sure you read the SHIV guide. Many of the other topics are also helpful.

Wow! Thanks for all the quick help, everyone!
Been tinkering with things this evening and figuring some more out.
The little action screen is the "Event Camera" and apparently only pops up when something happens, like a torpedo being shot, etc. Hitting the V key enlarges it full screen, as does double clicking on it and the / key closes it, but then it's gone, the / key is not a toggle off and on and there is no key I can find to get it back till the next event happens.
The reason I couldn't see anything out of the attack periscope is because you have to hit the F4 key.. similarly, with the Observation periscope.. you have to hit the O key. Or it seems that double clicking the icon for either one makes them work. The OBS Ins and Del keys raise it to any height or in between, while the ctrl + those keys raises it all the way up or down. Like wise, with the attack periscope, page up or down allow partial movement, while ctrl + those keys puts it all the way up or down.
Obviously a lot of you already know this stuff, I'm just going over what I discovered.
The radar is confusing.. in the training mission for a torpedo attack the radar set is there but it doesn't work. The sub is a porpoise USS Pike. But in the training for a convoy attack it does work and it's the same sub.??
The back space key, labeled as pause on the key card, does indeed pause the game but also decreases time compression to 1.. if you hit it a second time.
I'm surprised that no one has published a good soft bound manual on SH4, or any others in the series. I've looked at book stores on line and can't find any. I did find the help tutorials done by others, and the videos are good, but a good book with clear instructions would be really helpful to players, especially those starting out. The SH4 manual has a lot to be desired, no pictures, very vague information.. it really is not that helpful except for basic info, same with the help file while playing. IMHO
Oh.. I switched the fire torpedo key "enter" with the fire gun key "space" in the commands.cfg file found in the data/cfg folder, but it didn't change it in game for some reason. Must be something else that needs to be changed in one of the other config files. Maybe I'll see if I can put the fire torpedo key assigned to the number pad "ins" key, which isn't used, well see if it's possible. I like using the brackets to turn some times because it keeps turning, but hitting the "'" key is right next to the "enter" key and I keep wasting torpedos.
When I get more familiar with everything I'll have to try out that TMO mod, sounds good.
Again, thanks all for the input and help.

This is what I have been using for more than a year and seems to work ok.
Set time compression to 1X
Time compression normal
CTXT = 1,2,6,9
Hitting the enter key than the - key pauses the game from any time compression setting.
Fire torpedo changed to "F" key.
The W key is cycle tubes and your hand is already there to fire torpedos, kind of handy for me anyway.
Don't use the insert key as that raises the observation scope. The delete key lowers it.
You must use a key that is not assigned to something else or you will lose the other function.
Before you dig around in the .cfg or any other files make a copy of the original, just in case. you probably know this but.......
As to the radar, same boat different time, you get radar in mid 42 I believe it is.
Good luck and good hunting

Thanks, Magic, will try out your cfg file changes.
The "insert" key I was refering to was on the number pad, it's also the "0" key. I didn't mean the "insert" key that does the periscope. I'm just not sure how you determine the code to direct it to a key position.

I'm just not sure how you determine the code to direct it to a key position.
It's standard ASCII code.

I decided to go the programmable key route. My old Saitek Eclipse keyboard has illuminated keys, but they don't really work very well and the keys are starting to get worn out and sticky after a couple of years of use, so... I've ordered a Microsoft Sidewinder X6 programmable keyboard. The key illumination is much better and it has a lot of features that will be useful, not to mention the ability to program all the keys for SH4 onto the number pad, put it on either side of the keyboard, and use other macros. Price, only about $40 on Amazon.com Here's a link to it: http://www.microsoft.com/hardw...details.aspx?pid=102 (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/productdetails.aspx?pid=102)
How do you get into these shallow, enemy harbors undetected on missions? There is barely enough depth to get under water. I managed to get in and out of Osaka harbor, take photos and blow up a few ships, but I'm pretty much on sissy reality settings so far.
