I have an important question regarding Multiplayer features in Silent Hunter 3.

Me and my friends have been looking to get this game mainly for cooperative aspects. In the past it was mentioned there will be cooperative campaign of some kind, but nowdays I have only seen mention of cooperative missions.

My question is this: Are there multitude of cooperative multiplayer missions vs AI with various objectives and are those missions long? By now I guess the campaign mode is only available in single player correct? I wish there was way to play campaign mode cooperatively in multiplayer is that in any way possible? Thanks for your time!

P.S.

-before someone tells me to use "find" function to find older threads on this: I already tried I click find and I tried putting coop, co-op and even multiplayer as key search words and I always get this result: 'The search is complete. No matches were found.' - Obviously something wrong with forum search function.

All right I was just hoping to know the answer before actually making my purchase as you know this will affect my decision to buy it.

Kilrathi (Wing Commander reference? Great game!), keep in mind that the game comes with a mission editor which means we will all be able to create missions for the community.

The sub sim community is fairly large so I wouldn't worry too much about the variety/length/etc. of missions that will be available.

All any of us can do right now is guess. My guess is that campaign mode won't allow co-op play, the reason being the vast distances you might want to be travelling at high time compression speeds while your buddy may want to be at 1:1 time compress because he's in the middle of a stalk. I don't see a way around this problem unless they force every player to abide by the speed demanded by the player who chooses the slowest time compress setting at any given moment. This could mean that the majority of players might find themselves sailing an empty sea for days in real time while one or two of their comrades had spotted a juicy convoy.

I would hazard a guess that him and his friends would be part of the same pack, so time compression would not be much an an issue.
Hard to say for sure though.
I would think something could be worked out.

Beeryus is right. It's the same reason you can't do co-op in a game like R:TW. The game can only move as fast as the slowest person. Yes, if they are all sailing in a pack it wouldn't really matter, but that would be highly unrealistic and a co-op campaign would ONLY work for that kind of play. Given that most of the gaming community is rather hardcore, it wouldn't make much sense to put that in there. So to answer your question, no, I doubt it will be a feature. Don't get me wrong though; if it was feasible, I would love to see it.

Since there is a campaign editor, however, you and your friends could easily design your own mission and make it as long as you like. The flexibility here is unfathomable. I wouldn't let the lack of a co-op mode effect your decision to buy.

You make it harder than it could be. You can force players to stay within specific distance and perform missions together even control same ship with 2 players instead of 2 submarines but even with 2 submarines you can force players to play campaign missions together as in 1 objective.

Not for a proper campaign. You have to go back to your base for a proper campaign. The game is going to have single missions where two or more players can hunt, wolfpack style, but a full campaign needs some method of overcoming the time compress issue. What you seem to be suggesting is a half-campaign played in mid-ocean, but that's still not a full-scale multiplayer campaign, and it would still fall victim to the time compress problem. What if one boat spots the convoy first and the other boats are not in a good position? One player might want to be at a relatively low time compress rate so that he can shadow the convoy and not lose it, while the others will want it much faster. Basically, what will happen is that most of the boats will find themselves sailing for hours in open sea while one or two of them are waiting for them to catch up.

You guessed right. It's been screwed up since the beginning.

One idea noone really touched on would of been ability to have 2 players control 1 sub, each player having ability to control equal amount of officers.

Multiplayer in the game is one pack attack.

So there will be a convoy with escorts. Then the 6 (or however many people) will each have a sub each, and attack the convoy together. Evading destroyers and timing their attacks. One sub could temp the destroyers on a wild goose chase while the others pounce ect.

Time compression is easy to work (as it is in total war) time compression only works if everyone selects it. As soon as one person deselects it then its normal time. That is if it is in the game, its not really necessary in a short sharp convoy attack.
