View Full Version : How to communicate with modders

Tongue in cheek, but also true, in a sarchastc manner of speaking. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
1. When something doesn't work right, immediately address the author of the mod you were using. Clearly it is something they did, because no stock bugs could possibly exist after their magnificent makeover of the game. It lets them know you think highly of their work.
2. If using multiple mods and something doesn't work right, immediatly address the author of the biggest mod your using, or the one first installed. Their mods the biggest in size or was installed first, it must have been their mistake, and they'd want to know about it so that they can improve! It also lets them know your their number 1 fan.
3. PM your favorite mods author every day, or at least once a week with an inane request. Modders enjoy having a fan club who writes to them reguarly, and they appreciate the attention. Nothing says "I love you" to a modder more then having to clean out their full inbox once every week or two.
4. When talking about improving the game, make references about how great it would be if other modders not present did it instead. It lets the existing modders know how much their work is appreciated.
5. When talking about changes in a mod, speak about how its totaly unrealistic, or the physics involved doesnt match your vast experiences in real life. It lets the modder know that he has to try harder to overcome limitations imposed by the game engine. Nothing a super computer and 5 years of code development couldnt fix, the modder will get right on it, I promise!
6. When trying to get a modders attention, approach them in a direct, confrontational manner. Demand a response until you get one, and tag all PMs with "have read notifications" to make sure they saw your PM. It lets the modder know how much you care, and that your needs have priority!
7. Last but not least, mention that a modders work sucks. After spending more time working on the game, then some people spend on part time jobs, and without pay; nothing motivates modders better then by using reverse psychology!
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif Ive been wanting to say that for months! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

It's about damn time that a modder spoke up.
They do it for free.
They try to please everybody and aside for the thanks of maybe 10% of the people who use their work, get nothing in return. There are literally thousands of people using Trigger Maru and I haven't seen anywhere near that number of thank yous.
If you don't like a MOD, don't use it. If you want to change it, learn what's involved and change it yourself. Guys like Ducimus owe us nothing.
Let's get a little perspective on this. Ducimus couched his post in a humorus way, but his points should be well considered by all of us.
I for one appreciate the work of all the modders, whether I use their MODS or not isn't important, as I have a great deal of respect for all of them.
Besides, the more you bother Ducimus, the longer I have to wait for the next edition of Trigger Maru.
Dgrayson gets off his soapbox and quietly departs...shaking his head http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Oh yeah I won!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif
Hmm... well, considering what we were talking about, I don't think I should cherish that much...!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Anyway, seriously, I have to totally agree with Dgrayson: many people simply don't seem to understand the effords and time that modders put in their activity.
Any mod should be seen as a gift, and no one should give it for granted!
Modders don't owe us anything, but we owe them our gratefulness and respect... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Hmmm not really. I dont think any modder (at least none that i talk to) expects people to be grateful or bow down to their presence. Infact, i think most modders avoid posts that bestow alot of kudos, simply because they dont want people to think that they have expectations of others in regards to their person. Nobody wants to be seen as having a big head. The "thank you's" are appreciated, but can't really be responded to, silly social protocols and all. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

No, Really!
I've tried messing around with a few things until I encountered the dreaded "menu_1024_768" file. Just a simple file compare with another drove me nigh to the brink of insanity.
So yes, my hats off to you sir! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Which is what makes you all the more precious to us. You do it out of your love for submarines and for the betterment of the community. You don't expect thanks or money and put up with a lot of @#$% in the process of being nice. As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished. And still, you continue to modify and evolve your mods so they can become better and better.
Then UBI patches..... And you start over almost from scratch....
Ducimus, I am proud to have you in my submarine sim community and (in lew of a verbal "thank you") would be honored to buy you a ice cold beer.
I appreciate your work and I have the utmost respect for it. I have tried my hand at modding myself (with some interesting, sometimes funny, results) and know how much time and patience it takes. You have made SH4 a challenging and fun experience with TM and I am happy you have taken the time to do so.
