Talking to two Germans in Italy on a business trip at the back end of last year, whilst being by two Italians, we were discussing the English langauge ref it's Germanic roots and it's ability to aquire words form other languages easily - I ventured Schadenfreude as an example of the same.
The Germans thought that the lack of a word for schadenfreude in the english language was a good thing.

die schadenfreude = the gloating

No, it means more than that.

Can you explain?
It basically means to have pleasure over someone else's misfortune right?

Yes, but to gloat...implies that you, or something related to you, has caused that misfortune.
i.e. a football supporter 'gloats' (if he is a bad sport) if his team beats an opponent.
You would gloat, if you got of with a girl that one of your rivals fancies (if you wanted a bloody nose).
etc.
The gif above, we don't know or have affected the unfortunate volumetrically challenged woman. So why do we take pleasure in her incident? To me the true sense of schadenfreude would be if she had done that whilst trying to steal a choclate bar.

Something along the lines of "banana peel comedy"?

gloat (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/gloat)
–verb (used without object)
1. to look at or think about with great or excessive, often smug or malicious, satisfaction: The opposing team gloated over our bad luck.
–noun
2. an act or feeling of gloating.
I got a feeling this is like "brilliant". The British use it most commonly as "great" while the Canadians use it most commonly as "smart".

I always understood it to mean.
"Deriving pleasure at the discomfort or pain of others."
I get intense schadenfreude when Notre Dame gets spanked in American Football, or the Yankees get destroyed in baseball.

Gloating needs an audience, schadenfruede can be a private pleasure.
I hate those 'send in videos of your kids falling off swings or grannie falling off her bike' shows, but must be in a minority judging by the prime time advertising slots they get. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

The woman seems to be volumetrically gifted rather than challenged. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Same here. I quite enjoyed watching the trick shows where people walk into a weird setup and seeing how they react, but I can`t really get why primetime needs to be taken up with someone walking into a door, or falling off a swing, or seeing a cat burp. maybe funny-ish, but not worth primetime. It`s like a nothing-ness.
Anyway, I can`t even smile slightly at that shot the OP`s popped up cos the lady really looks like she had a bad accident fall there. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
Am I party-pooping? Well I`m right!
I`ll get my coat then.

You're perfectly entitled to your opinion SeaFire, and you're right, it does look like a really bad fall.

She did take something that does look like a candy bar. She appears to be attempting to steal it.

Since it has already been mentioned, I find the volume of "fat kid falling" videos on YouTube a bit disturbing.
I too love practical jokes but not whereas people get seriously hurt. I'd bet that woman spent some time in the hospital due to that fall. If not, she's someone you don't wanna mess with.

Well as the OP i wasn't trying to 'say' anything - i was bored and someone e-mailed me that gif plus i thought Schadenfreude was an interesting title.
Maybe i'm too cynical but she looked like she was 'well-padded' and is probably living the good life now from her compensation payout...

Im betting the only bit that hurt was landing onto the first stairs, broken ribs and maybe a damaged hip. And a lot of shock. Its suprising what sort of falls the human body can take. Anyway i doubt she was really badly hurt. As in ICU hurt.

She could also be dead from a broken neck.
The point is we don`t know. It`s not the same as slipping on a bananskin or falling off a chair.
Until I do know, I ain`t laughing.

A lot of serious injuries occur from day to day accidents.
I have broken four toes, cracked ribs, and had a concussion all from stupid falls. I joke that I'm gonna die tripping and falling (almost took a header down some stairs the other day) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
On all these occasions I was stone sober. Though I did apparently walk across W. Tropicana Ave. in Vegas drunk as hell without a scratch, go figure.

While I love physical comedy, seeing that film clip makes me cringe. Seeing someone else get hurt is always a bad thing.

That is really stupid to have a floor tile removed without barracading it. It's an OSHA rule in the U.S. to do so. Or at least have someone posted at the site to keep people from stepping into it.
