View Full Version : GF Ti4600 vs ATI 9800 vs GF FX5700.

Here I got a Ti4600 and thinking to replace it.
As I donâ´t have a top notch CPU (2.26ghz) I wonâ´t go for the latest graphic card...I donâ´t think it could handle it anyway but instead go for either a ATI 9800 or a Fx 5700.

Now,I asume those two cards is faster/better than my current one but wich is better between those two.

Any thoughts from those who has better knowledge about those cards than I?

In order of "power":

1)9800 - best bang for the buck right now (but make sure it is a 256 bit memory bus version and not 128 - stay away from SE cards, these are 128 bit)
2)4600... beleive it or not, I think (not an NV expert, but I read somewhere that the 4600 is a better performing card than most of the FX 5x00 series (apart from the high end cards). Anyone care to correct/agree ?)
3)5700.

check here for a specs comparison http://www.pcvsconsole.com/features/video/

the only thing I can see in favour of the 5700 is that it is a Direct X 9 card vs the DX8 4600... but I've never had a NV card so I can only read the figures.

If you could post a dxdiag we could get a better look at your current setup (Ram/drivers etc) and maybe someone can offer a more precise opinion.
Luckyboy's guide (http://www.airwarfare.com/tech/tech_lbguide.htm#012) has instructions for doing this.

hope this helps http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The 9800 for sure is the better card. In fact your Ti4600 could probably keep up with the 5700. I know my old Ti4200 kickes a FX5200 butt. 9800Pro has 8 pipelines vs the 5700 4, also the 9800PRO has a 256Bit bus width again more "highway" for the GFX to travel on. Lastly overall the FX series were not great cards unless it was the top of the line ones e.g. FX5950

Go for the 9800Pro. (One as specified by ASM 1!!)

Why?
I've got a P4 2.4Ghz, and a TI-4200. I asked here 'what to upgrade?'
LB advised me to upgrade to a 9700 Pro (or maybe a 9800 Pro)
Well, I never got round to do it, but his advice still stands!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/351.gif I forgot to say 9800 "pro" - you can get 9800 non pros with 256bit memory bus, but these are getting difficult to locate. Also worth bearing in mind is that the 9800's (with the appropriate R360 GPU) can be bios flashed to the 9800 XT spec - which means even MORE power.

As for how much memory on the card... well it really is immaterial, unless you run at high res. When I bought my 9800pro (6 months ago)I went for a 128mb 256bit card, and of course did the aforementioned MOD.

If I were making the same purchase decision today, and if I could find one...and of course if it is within budget I'd get a 256MB card, just for that weebit extra flexibility that the extra memory gives. Also the 256MB cards are virtually Identical in terms of architecture to the 9800XT, and thus it is possible to bios mod these cards to "true" XT spec....

Anyways I digress.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

HTH... again! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I am with ASM-1 again. I too have the aformentioned 9800PRO with the R360 core also flashed to XT and couldnt be happier. Now granted a better cooler for it next on the agenda but works fantastic

I went from an asus 8200deluxe geforce3 to an agp x8 Albatron 256mb 6800gt. It was worth the update lmao. Do yourself a favour, go all out, and get the 6800gt or the ATI X800. Then when it comes time to update your mobo you will have the card already.

Just to reinforce andrews advice- make sure you get an 8 pipe 9800 do not get lite or SE versions which are cut down versions with only 4 pipes.
the fx5700 or 5900 are only 4 pipes as well.

pipes are like information tunnels the more you have the faster the info is transferred so better iq is available.

Do not expect to see any great increase in FPS with new card - you will need to increase processor speed for this. You will be able to run higher image settings with new card.

Aye

the only other thing I would say if you intend to upgrade your gfx card, make sure you have enough juice to run it - for 9800 pro's, ATI recommend a 300w PSU or greater, although power requirements differ depenting on the other stuff in your system and please dont skimp on the PSU... cheap ones can be VERY nasty - I had one die on me and take kit with it....http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

PS OT: - Dieg whereabouts in Scotland you from m8 ?

I just want to clear something up here so there is no disappointment if/when a new card is purchased.

I see a lot of remarks of which card is faster. Remember, Faster is all relative to what settings you fly and what your tastes are, amoung many other things.

As for speed, I believe all cards would be similar on excellent mode with no AA or aniso with the 9800pro and 4600 slightly on top.

BUT, Start adding more eye candy like AA and Aniso and you will see the 4600/5700 fall through the floor while the 9800pro chugs happily along with very little fps loss.

So, Do not expect a big increase in fps without taking this into consideration.

Your system is well balanced right now. In order to see an fps increase, a new CPU would be your best option. But if you want much nicer graphics and similar speed, go with the 9800pro.

If you made the jump to the new high end cards, you will be CPU limited in a big way. You will get faster speeds and better eye candy, but not near its full potential. So, If you plan a cpu upgrade in the near future, maybe you should go with the new high end cards like x800xt or 6800GT.

But that opens a whole new can of worms to. Would you want PCI-express when you do you cpu upgrade? We could go on and on.

Good Luck!

Not completely correct, 5900/5950/se/xt/plain/ultra or any nv35/38 have 4 pipelines but do two textures per clock, this refered as 4x2 or most times simply 8 (as it's usuall to call them, not 4 because it gives a comepletely wrong picture). They have all a 256bit mem bus too. Only main difference are clocks and memory timmings (xt's and Se's have much tighter timmings, altough less clock).

Did you guys check out the new 6600GT yet?
Its another (I think very strong) player in this segment. Its got Level3 Shaders http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Guru3D (http://www.guru3d.com/article/content/184/) has some very good reviews on it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif link is for a Prolink 6600GT AGP8x 128MB to be had for about US$180-US$200

Good points, Coastie. My sentiments exactly about the difference between upgrading for FPS gain and for upgrading to see more eye candy.

I ran this series on a GF2 GTS 32MB, pushed by an XP1700@XP2600(333) for over two years. I upgraded to a Ti4200 128MB that I got used from a good friend and found that I was running only a few frames higher than my GF2 GTS was.

The BIG difference however, is that now I can run with 2X AF/AA, all excellent settings and still get a few more frames than my GF2 on low terrain, no AA or AF. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Of course, to answer the main question about the three vid cards mentioned...grab the 9800 PRO and run like a bandit. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I've actually been leaning towards a 6800 at this time, as it is starting to be not much more than a 9800PRO. About $60-70.00 separates the two.

Just as another reference, check this site out:

http://techreport.com/etc/comparo/graphics/

It compares many, many past and present video card specifications.
