View Full Version : settlers 7 server not available

Alright...
I can understand the difference between the DRM and game servers here, unlike some.
and i make a request...
for those of us in areas most affected by the server unavailable message. Like Australia.
give us a patch, a version, that keeps the DRM (thats working fine), but disables the need for the server connection for single player modes.
because, guess what, it wasn't well tested.
ITS NOT WORKING AT ALL FOR THOUSANDS OF PAYING CUSTOMERS.
this is going beyond a bug or an oversight, this product should not have been released until this issue was dealt with.
Ubisoft will lose many thousands of customers now and in the future because of the time and effort (and money) many of us have wasted on a product that simply does not function at all.
there are no excuses for a mistake of this magnitude. it shows a total lack of good business practice, and even less care for your customers.

I don't think anyone here would disagree with you over that.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
It's unacceptable - so If I was in your position, I would contact the store, and ask for a refund, or if they don't play ball, contact your local support, and ask them for it.
If you really don't want the refund, and just want to play, I can only say 'they are working on it'
I have passed on complaints about the lack of support some of you appear to have been given.
I can only say, they are working on the servers, but like you say, it should have been dealt with sooner.

The Game Launcher connects to the Online Services Platform servers,[DRM] checks your allowed to play, and starts the game..
The launcher keeps a tiny connection to the OSP server at all times [about 56kbs]
If the connection goes down, the game may pause, and the launcher window will pop up and say 'you need and internet connection to play the game'
If the game launches, and then you get the dreaded 'Server Unavailable' message, that may be the game server, the one that handles quest tracking, achievements, mentor system and the multiplayer modes..
So you can have a situation, like we currently are seeing, where the OSP[DRM] is working fine, since it launches, but the Settlers 7 server, is not allowing you to connect [for whatever reason]
This of course, is not acceptable, and any server not being able to be connected to, for any length of time, is not either..
But, many people just blame the DRM, when in fact it's a different issue..
The functions of what you call the 'game servers' are the features of the Online Services Platform as detailed in Ubisoft's Online Services Platform FAQ. It's the 'service' that allows you to play your game from any computer, using your own save games, stats etc. it is also the DRM.

If ubisoft used the old solution, only multiplayer had been affected by the server problems.
But now, you cant play singleplayer campaign or skirmish if the server are down.
So this IS really a DRM's problem in the end. You need connection to ubisoft server all the time to prove you didnt pirate the game. And when something dont work, being DRM, server or both, you cant play anything...
If thats pc gamings future, I will quit playig pc games http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

After my reponse from support and the fact it still didnt fix the problem I decided to waste more money and call the support phone number in Australia. I spoke to a gentleman (again with an english accent) and asked many questions like "why is it after roughly 2 weeks I get the same server message" and "WHAT IS THE ISSUE" I was told rather politely that the servers had been offline but were back up and running.........I then asked him why I still couldnt play the game and he told me the server were having issues but that was all the information he had. He took my ticket number and advised me he would pass it on to Level 2 Technical Support.................
So again, wasted my time and money to try and get the game to work only to be told there is an issue with the servers. I kind of felt like I was being blown off. Is there even such thing as Level 2 Technical Support or is that Ubisofts equivalent of "we have the customers money now so who gives a f**k.

Just spoke to Technical Support again. And was advised that, yes there was major error. It is now being fixed and anyone having problems (ie. Server Unavailable) should be able to play within the next 24hrs. They are currently updating the servers. I dont know how accurate this information is, as the gentleman advised all the information was coming from the UK early this morning.
I also asked that if I am unable to play over the weekend can I call technical support and was advised there are people there 24/7.
So everyone, fingers/toes crossed that in the next 24hrs we can all play.

What happened to the thread regarding the unconventional fix for these guys? Is it really just about getting their Settlers 7 account registered for them and matched to their Ubi account? Why can't Ubisoft do this for them?
Mr_Shade
04-09-2010, 05:09 AM
Due to the potential for the sharing of account info going VERY badly wrong, I have removed it.
The OP was fully understanding of the security risks to people who may be a little too trusting.
I have passed on this 'work around' - but I am hoping it will not come down to having people register them, one by one.. since that could take an age..
It 'should' be done server side, so everyone's game works at the same time.
We will have to see if the next update fixes it, apparently they are working on it now.

Quite "funny" that Settlers 7 is effectively invite only at the moment, even though you pay up front for it. Someone obviously thought it would be hilarious to watch the players scramble to register each other... and rob each other.

Unfortunately, just registering the game isn't a permanent fix for the problem. I registered my own game successfully and played for a while, but am currently locked out since a few days. It appears to be intermittent or at least recurring. We'll have to wait and hope for a serverside fix. Weekend perhaps? *fingers crossed*

Well, I know Support isn't recreating a profile for me as they have tolds me that they can't do that. Here is the latest response from UK Technical Support:
Hello,
Regretfully we are unable to create a profile for you.
If you are still having trouble connecting to the servers please try the following:
Please fully disable your background software by using msconfig
Msconfig.

Also try removing Temp files from the Temporary Directory.
1. Reboot the PC
2. Once back in Windows, Press the windows key together with R
3. In the Run box, type %temp%
4. In this folder click Tools and then folder Options. Then select "View"
and select the option to "Show hidden files and folders" and click apply.
5.Remove all files from this folder.
6. Restart the Computer
7. Empty the Recycle bin and run the installation again.
NOTE: To return to the original startup sequence follow below instructions
- click start menu
- click run
- type in the following MSCONFIG
- click on normal startup
- click on apply and then close
- restart your computer
Kind Regards,
Ubisoft Technical Support.
Has anyone else got this response?
If so, has it worked?
I am reluctant to do this as a reinstall will result in downloading patch 1.02 again, 440Mb and 5 hours ($5.95 for another 1Gb of download limit). Let me know if it is worth it.

I had this response too, but even on a freshly installed it did not help. At the moment I can play single, but no empire.
Download limits? Wow... I download about 50-80 GB every week and never pay for extra GBs, would be quite expensive, lol. I guess we're lucky to have a fair use policy (which never gives any problems, not even when downloading over 100GB in one night).

i found a solution to my issue.
when i started the game it would try and load my online saved games, after which it would do a 4 sec count down, load the game and (the really annoying part) tell me the server was unavailable and would not allow me to play the game. (not even single player mode!!!!!!!!!)
my solution is that when you start the game and it tries to load the previously saved games from the internet, you need to go to the settings menu (left of the close button, on the top right of the window)
which then asks if you want to disable your saved games to be stored online.
say yes, PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!

It is working for me. I don't know if it was a fix by Ubisoft and/or BlueByte or what I did.
I am running ZoneAlarm on Windows XP. I had a look at the settings for the S7 programs and changed them from Ask to Allow (blue question mark to green tick). Started the game and got my first successful run.
Edit - Went into Support to update my ticket and found that the status had been changed to Solved. Looks like they didn't like me saying that they didn't know what was going on and that they should look in the forum before instructing people to do things that have already been proven not to work.
Thinking about it, I don't think me playing with ZoneAlarm fixed the problem. The first thing I usually do if a new program doesn't run is to turn ZoneAlarm off and try again. This didn't work on Day 1 so I didn't try it again. Maybe Ubisoft/BB have fixed the problem.
Now, do the S7 owners get a free game like the AC2 owners? The S7 outage has been a lot longer than the AC2 outage.

That may be due to the issue, being local.. for example the problem with zone alarm is given out by support I believe. I have also seen a few people post about you have to allow the game network access in windows firewall - maybe they did not have the tick in the 'setup windows firewall' box on the installer? - steam install maybe?
And support should be helping those people http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Some people still having issues though, if it's server related they are working on it.

This is one of the common fixes I have seen work over the past few days,
So I think this is important to know - even though there is a tick box for it when you install the game, by default it's ticked- it may have been unticked, or some error happened - so please check your settings http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Still weeks since purchasing the game, I have had nothing but the automated reply from the support people, and i replied to that saying "thanks but no thanks basically, cant wait till you reply with something that helps, lookin forward to the fix"... I then get an email today saying, and oh boy do i quote: "We have not heard from you concerning your request for support in the 48 hours since we sent you a response. Consequently, we have changed the status of your question to SOLVED."
You really have to be kidding me, what on earth is going on there!?

At least quit with the emails saying that as it has been 48 hours since we last emailed you and we have not had a reply .. your problem must be solved...
Wrong.. nothing changed.. still as annoyed as ever.
Maybe it is time for a class action to be taken against Ubisoft for labeling all Australian players as pirates.
That or i guess it is time to donate my copy to some pirates to assist them with their DRM cracking.

but after having switched this settings off i have been playing happily for 3 days!!! without a single "server is unavailable" message!!!
i would love to hear if anyone has tried my solution to see if it works for others.
(also this completely removes the games need to sync your saved games, which can take a long time depending on the amount of saved games you keep, which is another benefit)

I got the game off steam today, and was looking forward to playing it today. None of the fixes here seems to do it for me, and support hasn't answered my plea yet. I am guessing I can't get my money back from steam, since I allready used the cd-key. I think it's pretty awful of them to trick us into regestering the cd-key before actually checking if the copy protection will work on my computer or not.
Unless someone here as another fix I haven't tried, then I will just have to wait for support to answer me.

The server is down again...
Meanwhile the support question I asked when it didn't work a few days ago got answered: "I am sorry it didn't work a few days ago when you asked us for help, I assume it works now?".
Well, it did work for a few days but now it doesn't again and why do you assume stuff? Seriously, you need to actually look at what I write and answer that instead of writing generic answers.
I don't know what to think about all this but I'm not a very satisfied customer.

This is crap.
I've now tried on two computers. One at home and my work laptop.
The one at home has the 'Server not found' error (something like that anyway) and the one at work says:
"An internet connection is required to play this game. Failed to connect to the Ubisoft master servers. Please verify that your internet connection is functional and try again."
Genius. I love how this message comes straight after it download the patch....
When will they sort this crap out?

They're ****ing with us. We paid them to feed them but pirated editions can be play but original copies won't work just because of their stupid policies. I'm protesting ubi.

How is this even legal for UBISOFT? It clearly says on the box "A permanent internet connection is required to play the game" (CHECK) but it doesn't mention anything about their crap servers not working which is needed to play the game! Does anyone know of any class action lawsuits being filed regarding this. I bet the BBB would have a field day with this one! Seriously UBISOFT it's called stress testing your servers before launch!

Hi All, Thought I'd join the brigade of disgruntled users and add my "for ****s sake ubisoft sort this out" I've owned Settlers 7 for two days and managed to play it for only half-an-hour thanks to their god-awful server connectivity.
There's absolutely no need for such draconian DRM and all I'm thinking now is that I may as well download and try the crack 'server-offline launcher'... ... so I may as well have pirated the bloody game if this is what I have to do to get it working!?
How do they sleep at night? (Probably on a bed of money laughing maniacally.)

Like Grytpype I too shall add my number into the pile of very annoyed players list. It has worked fine for a week (other then it not loading this morning cause of crashing) then today I was happily conquering lands, got my victory points, clock is counting down, 3....2....1............crash http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Ok ok no big loss load up the auto save. Nope server not available. Sounds like, with what everyones saying, i'll try again in a week and see if it works.
It took me 2 and a half hours to load the game with all patches and crashes, now this. If ubisoft released another game with this DRM i really would think twice before buying, maybe instead i'll go burn some money as that would achieve more.

To add to the grievance pile...
I generally rate a game on time_played/cash_spent. So far, due to the all too familiar "Server not available" screen, Settlers 7 receives my lowest rating in years (possibly ever).
This is a darn shame. It appears from the 30 min. I've been able to play the game that I would enjoy it. I hope that either this problem will be remedied soon or that I can somehow get a refund.

Server is currently down for me. UK 17.05pm GMT.
Amazing game but the DRM is absolutely hateful.

Server unavailable here as well. I'm in the U.S.
It would be nice if there was some communication from ubisoft on when their servers are down/up. I hate having to try launching the game repeatedly with my fingers crossed.
Why couldn't these problems happen during the week while I was at work and had no time to play?

lol. Oh well, was able to play 2 games today, 3 froze up and one made the entire system freeze up... I'd like to say it got better over the last two weeks, but it hasn't http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
If anything, it seems like more stuff starts to break :P the My Realm no longer updates empire statistics, the game card function fails, what's left that does work...?

The problem can not connect to the server could arise from the use of pirated versions of the game Assassin's Creed II I.
To fix the problem if you are using is not licensed version of the game Assassin's Creed II you need from the folder C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers Remove the file named hosts

Is the server down?
I'm trying to play the demo. The patcher gives an error and then the login window gives connection errors too before I can give my credentials. All other internet sites work for me.

10 days and no play time for me now. Ubisoft support has replied 3 times during the last 10 days. None of their answers were helpful (especially when the second reply was to do what the first told me to do again). Is it legal to release a game and not let the players play? Don't the customers have any rights?

From external source:
DRM activation networks are crappy by design. They are made on the cheap, because they are just superfluous expense. They will go down all the time – it’s a fact of life. That’s how this whole racket is set up. Think about this next time you buy a game with online activation.
My favorite mission I am playing over and over is "Server not available" / "Login"

I was thinking about buying this game. But now? No, until there is an offline mode that only checks just after you first install the game I will have to pass. OR just sell it through steam with NO OTHER DRM.

OK I FOUND THE FIX
LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY
Its to do with your account and server Authentication. Here's how I know and what I did for the game to work straight from the get go and im talking fellow Auastralians its Saturday 5/1/2010 and working.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm167/tockli/MyRealm.jpg
there where the White blan box is put your login name you use to login the game with. Thats what i did anyway. I confim it works very very well this game is awsome. DRM problem FIXED
Go to the actual settlers 7 website.
Login in. Then to the left of the columm underneath Home on the navigation you see News then " MY REALM " click that, ok so you notice for profile name it has nothin or n/a even though you created a ubi account to play. It doesnt actually put that to your profile on there website. So by doin this manually like explained it allows you then to play.
So conclusion
Go to website login
go to My realms
Profile name - make your account login name
save that start the game and Bang your playing like me no faults. Any questions feel free to email me directly sneakytaipan@gmail.com

Thank you very much for your help.
But for me it wasn´t the solution. I have made what you said but still have that the server not available message.
The strang is that if the system can sync the save games why the server not available message.
Arghhhhhhhhhhh.....

Same problem here. First response I give here, but this is really ridiculous!
I bought this game end of March, haven't been able to play the game a single time.
I'm a network-engineer, so I work with computers, switches, routers and firewalls all day, so that's not the problem in this case....
The worst part of all of this is (in my opinion), the total lack of responses from Ubi themselves. If I would know, what the problem was, or what they're doing to fix this, I would feel okay with it. Now I just have to wait and see what happens and see all kinds of weird solutions passing by, none of them helping.
I know it won't help much, but I think Ubisoft should be ashamed of themselves, for releasing and NOT supporting a game.....

I agree, the thread has turned into a general game launching problem thread, and there are already others that can be used instead.
