Hi there...

The day I got the game, my computer crashed twice. The screen got black, I saw some words in white on a blue background and it just rebooted itself - happen quickcly.

Also, yesterdy, it crashed one more time and it frozen twice. I had to take the plug from the outlet because the computer wouldn't reboot or turn off... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Fortunatly, I didn't get eletrecuted or something.

So.. my computer says that it is a "serious problem". And it only happens with this game. I got a Celeron2 2.0Ghz 512RAM... in other words: the problem is not my computer.

So I hope there is a patch soon. I don't want my brand new comoputer to get broken.

PS: When i returned to the places where the bugs happened, they didn't repeat. So I really don't know what's going on... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

If you will post all your computer specs, someone may be better able to assist you. There's a number of reasons you may be having problems that doesn't have anything to do with your processor.

I can barely get started in the game. I get to the same set of steps in the cleft and the game just disappears back to my desktop. I am stuck everytime starting out in the middle of the desert again. It is so frustrating. I have done the update thing everytime I start hoping that a patch will fix it. Is this happening to anyone else?

Always, always, always try this first:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310353 , then try playing the game. If you still get the same results, THEN look at hardware issues.
Oh yeah, FULL system specs would be nice too.

That's not necessarily that case. For all you know, you could have a bad processor or bad RAM. Faster hardware does not mean it's error-proof.

You should first make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card and sound card (and anything else too.. newer drivers are usually better) You should make sure you have the correct version of DirectX as well. Uru needs DX 9 which is included on the CD.

It would also help if you could tell us what you were doing right before the game crashed. That is very helpful in tracking down bugs.

All my comp specs? Doesn't really matter in my case. They are pretty good. The only problem that could be is with hardware. But this information I don't know how to get anyways....

What is most important is what version of Windows you are running. If you are running Windows ME, the kernel is inherently unstable and quite frequently blue-screens.

Let us know your complete specs so we can better assist you.

Just to be clear, it's not "the hardware" or "the software" -- it's the interaction between the software and the hardware that causes crashes. We know what the software is; so the missing piece of the equation is the hardware.

I've had similar problems that were improved by downgrading my drivers to Catalyst 3.8 from 3.9. With the 3.9's, I would always get a bluescreen when linking to the gallery and randomly elsewhere. After downgrading, I've yet to see a bluescreen. That said, I still get kicked to desktop regularly and, occasionally, my system will reboot instantly (no bluescreen, nothing).

This last problem is also the most recent, having only sprung up since I installed an Audigy card, disabled my onboard IDE Raid, and installed XP Home on a regular IDE channel (which did solve my last problem, crackling sound (albeit at the expense of RAID-0 quickness (grrrrr))).

So, now I have a system that doesn't crackle, but still reboots spontaneously. And Uru still crashes to the desktop, even if I'm at High detail at 1024x768 with no filtering on my Radoen 9700 Pro. Hooray! Now, I'm not saying that Uru is necessarily causing the spontaneous reboot, I think (hope) it's my power supply and will be replacing it tomarrow. But, judging from what I've read on the forums, other folks with ATI cards are having similar issues with bluescreens and being kicked to the desktop.

I've done all of the obvious stuff (like upgrade all drivers, flash the CD-ROM firmware, flash the BIOS, etc.), but the game is still unstable. Hopefully, these are known issues and Cyan is working to address them.

I have a P4 2.6mhz 512 ram, radeon 9600 video card sb audigy 2 sound card, all with updated drivers, and have not been able to get past the cleft without the computer freezing and a loud skreech from the speakers. I have to shut off the computer to get out of it. So far everything I've tried has not worked would love to have other suggestions from anyone who has been able to over come these problems.

I checked the support site and I read that it could be the resolution being to high and the settings being too high. I'm going to try this and see if it helps.

I know I have at least the minimum requirements, so I hope these problems stop:

Windows XP
ATI Radeon 7200
AMD Athlon
512 MB RAM
DirectX 9.0

I mean what gives? My computer is brand new...I don't want to ruin it with the crashes.

There is obviously a compatibility problem with the Radeon cards...

By the way, my IS Radeon, and it is a brand new one and I'm also worried about screweing it up.

Is this problem solved after patch1 being installed?

Well, I tried changing the settings for the graphics but it my pc stilled crashed right when I got behind the mountain.

I hope there is a patch to fix this. I just bought my pc this summer, so it's brand new.

Could someone who has been able to play the game straight through with no problemsplease write what specs your pc has? That would be helpful.

Sure. I played through the game with zero problems, short of a memory leak that would take nearly six hours to kick in (and I'm not sure whether that was the game, or my computer).

I could play it with graphics and sound on ubar-maximum, but the FPS was a tad lower than ubarly-smooth then, so I reduced the Anti-Aliasing and Antistropic filtering a bit. Other than that, it was amazingly good (if short).

An update... I upgraded my power supply from an Enlight 340W to an Antec 550W and the spontaneous reboot problem has disappeared. However, I'm still getting booted to the desktop occassionally, or worse yet, the game will simply freeze. In the hopes that the powers that be will be able to correct these problems, I've pasted my dxdiag file below. Hope this helps some weary bug-huntin' developer...

Looks like a software or driver conflict. Time to reboot, update drivers, reboot, and try again.

Everything else in your hardware looks good to me.

Oh and possibly killing background applications will help.

Don't know what else I could update... I have the latest BIOS, Via 4-in-1 drivers, Audigy Drivers, Windows Updates, and the second to latest ATI Catalyst drivers (3.8). I tried 3.9, but I kept getting bluescreens, and I saw a blurb on the Technical FAQ that recommended the 3.8's for this very reason. I've also tried tweaking BIOS settings, setting "fail-safe" defaults, disabling all unnecessary services with msconfig, etc., etc., etc.

I have already put waaay too much time and money into trying to get this game to work. At this point, I really feel like I've done everything I can do. I think the game is great, but it is simply not stable on my system. Fortunately, it runs flawlessly on my laptop, so I've still been able to play the game at lower fidelity. I don't have this problem with other 3d games, so I think the fault is in either Uru or the combination of it and my video driver. I hope that a future Uru or Catalyst driver update will correct this, and that it comes out before I get my Live invitation. I really like the game, and I want to play it on my gaming rig.

Kill background processes. Either that or reinstall Windows.


Actually, you could always reinstall windows, reinstall drivers, install URU and try it. Then install other software and play URU between them until you run into a problem. THEN you know what piece of software is causing problems.

To all those who suspect their Radeon based graphics card to be the cause of their problems:

If the latest Catalyst driver (http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html) from ATI does not improve the situation, then try one of the alternative Radeon device drivers. I recommend the Omega driver (http://www.omegacorner.com/index_ati.html) which is basically the official Catalyst but tweaked for maximum game compatibility.

With Omega 2.4.96c (based on Catalyst 3.9), I was able to run the Uru demo flawlessly with an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9000 under Windows XP (Service Pack 1), DirectX 8.1 with maximum details.

Generally, it is also good advice to install Uru from a read-only optical drive, i.e. avoid any RW drives because of possible incompatibilities with copy protection.

Well, I installed the Omega 2.4.96c driver on my system and it no longer bluescreens when I link to the gallery (the ATI 3.9's did) Still, I got a system lockup when I tried to enter the larger building in the garrison.

Overall, the performance of these drivers is noticably better than the ATI 3.8's, so I think I'll leave them installed and hope they produce less crashes than the 3.8's.

Having previously updated all that I could think of, I followed the advise of turning off the hyper-threading in the bios and after rebooting I've had no problems...(knock on wood)...
Can't tell you how exciting it was to get to relto and then to link to other ages. This is a beautiful game, if only for the great artwork. The fact that you can become part of the scene is awesome. Thanks again for your help, hope to see you in D'ni

for what it's worth.....

i have a pentium 4, 3.0 ghz. 1024mb ram and 256mb ddr ati radeon 9800 xt graphics card.

after linking a few times with no problems, i'd go to link again and the game would crash unexpectedly and kick me to the blue screen with an obnxoious static noise coming from my speakers. (it did this repeatedly.)

as such, i downloaded the latest catalyst drivers and went down to the default graphics settings (though i have since upped the res to 1024) and the game is fine now.

Hi again,

I pulled up the "dxdiag" report for my laptop. Could someone please help figure out why Uru crashes when i go behind the mountain in New Mexico? I tried lowering the graphics and it stilled crashed. I'm going to venture that even though the Radeon IGP is only a year old -- it's the culprit of your problems as it's most likely not adequate for playing the game.

I will have to look into this more later. I will plan on giving you more info if I find it.

Everytime I walk behind the mountain my laptop crashes. I don't have the expertise or time to monkey with drivers and settings. Please send help. I've got 6 of the journey cloths and don't know what or where to go since I can't complete my search.

My bet is video card and you're lucky if it is working this far..

Sunai, possibly. But I wouldn't count on it. That video card isn't quite up to snuff for playing URU -- and it's using system shared memory if I remember correctly.

Which would explain your problems.

Ok...i see where my problems lie. Thanks for your input. I guess i'll have to invest in a tower pc and customize it for gaming ( i love playing pc games). I don't want to spend a whole bunch on a gaming pc, would you have any suggestions? Anyone else please provide info too if you'd like.
