It looks totally different from the Balao class and is larger and tougher. It is probably the one US sub of wwII that actually looks different compared to the rest of the subs.

What surprises me is that they included Tambor and Gar as seperate classes, when they're so similar that the Gar boats are often just considered to be Tambor class.

Gar class subs could carry some 2500 gallons more fuel. (longer range)

In WW II, they looked just like the Balao

The Quillback shown here in the fifties. Same boat after it was Guppyfied.

wonder if this is this actually modeled?
right now im running a Tambor Class in '41.
wonder if there's a submerged range difference... right now i can only go about 60 nm at 2knots, thats with about 20% reserved for emergency situations.

The guppyfied version looks a lot cooler http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

You can see that they invested a lot of work to make the hull more hydrodynamic. But its funny that they just covered the mast-part of the conning tower instead of replacing the masts and periscopes by a smaller set-up.

Looks like someone was afraid of the costs http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Actually, the conning tower was a new costruction more or less. According to Wiki', a lot of the guppy boats had plastic sails.

Yes, the bottom line is: The Tench was so similar to Balao that it seems like it would have been VERY easy to add it to the game - very small conversion. But, as long as I at least have my Balaos (and Gatos) I guess I'm pretty happy. Not very many Tench boats saw action in the war.

Not very many Tench boats saw action in the war.

That's true.

It's also true that the "V-Class" consisted of some eleven boats.

But I don't think that limited service should be a criteria: ......After all, UBI had the SH3 Dev Team work long and hard to include the TypeXXI; ....a boat that never hurt anybody in real life!

If they're going to invest that sort of effort to include a boat just because it's "interesting", then I don't feel that we are out of line for requesting the Narwhal and Tench Class boats.

"The Balao and Corsair - Tench Classes were virtually identical to the Gatos, with just slight internal differences."

What's in quotes is something I got from this website: Valor at Sea (http://www.valoratsea.com/subwar.htm). They were also saying that the test depth of the Gato was 300ft compared to the Balao and Tench classes' 400ft.

As for the Tambor and the Gar classes: slight internal differences (and from what I've read, the Gar could make room for 10 more skippers), external weapons and an increased quantity of diesel for patrols are what differentiate the Gar from the Tambor.

What every boat needs!

Seriously, though, good post.

Ok, think i'm missing somthing here. The link given further up gives the specs as having a 5" gun and wikipedia refers to the tench dispatching smaller vessels with thier gun. But none of the pictures show the tench with a deck gun, someone please enlighten me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Many of the Tench class subs had their deck guns removed after the war. The pics you are coming across are probably post-war pictures.
