View Full Version : 4x Anti-Aliasing and Heat-Blur, I think I've solved it!

Okay, this has been driving me insane, I don't know if it's been pestering any of you as much as it has been me but I've been relentless in my pursuit in figuring this out. See, we all know the incompatability between AA and the heatblur and how it kills frame rates, but I've had strange inconsistancies with this problem. First off 2x AA seems to work fine with Heat-blur. Othertimes I can even manage to get 4x AA to work with it without problems.

Anyhow, to get to the point I was having one of those times where 4x AA was working perfectly with heat-blur... until I went into the graphics menu to change an option, when I started the game again same old problem, game runs slow when the heat-blur kicks in. This perplexed me, so I decided to try something, I went out of the game, set my AA to 2x, tried running with heat-blur and everything ran fine as it usually does when AA is at this level. I played the game for a bit, exited and set my AA back to 4x. When I got back into the game (without changing any graphics options mind you), heat-blur worked once again without a hitch with AA at 4x.

So long story short, turn off your AA or set it to 2x, run the game with heat-blur, leave game, set AA back to 4x or 6x or whatever it is you enjoy running and play the game. It should work as long as you don't change any graphics options, if you do you'll have to repeat the process. This seems to be a workaround for the problem, atleast for me. I hope this information can come in handy for the rest of you as well.

For reference sake I'm running an ATi Radeon 9700 pro with Catalyst 3.9.

I have to change grphic optins everytime...Scenes always go back to "med" instead of High, and if I don't visit the options menu "mind you I don't have to change anything, label always come on. Also, even running at 2XQ makes my computer restart with heat blur...and Nvidia's 2X is like no AA at all.

What are the best settings for ATI Cat 3.9 and Lomac?

I'm running everything maxed aside from:
water: medium
view distance: medium

Running at 1024x768x32, 4x AA and 16x AF, runs pretty smoothly

Shame.

I'm going to bump this since a few questions are being asked, no guarantee it'll work with retail.

The README states:

The HEAT BLUR effect is NOT compatible with your video card anti-aliasing features turned on and will create a conflict that will greatly affect performance and frame rate. If you want HEAT BLUR effects you need to turn off your anti-aliasing settings. Note: The HEAT BLUR effects do not appear for all aircraft (A-10 for example) and will not appear for aircraft if they are traveling at high speeds.

I'm also having a dramatic FPS loss at low speeds and using FSAA 4X and AF 2X, just have to turn off heat blur effect I suppose :-(

/ Janne

One solution that was discovered a little while ago was to control-escape out of the game, then return to the game and it all seems to work perfectly, give that a shot as well.

Yep I found this awhile back also think I posted it here. If you get the heatblur problem reduce the game to a small window and then move it back to fullsize this also works for the "lurching" motion you somtimes get where it looks like the whole plane surges about an 1/8 of an inch back and forth. The other way works also just leave the game move the AA or AF slider back one notch hit apply then back to where it was and hit apply again.

This has been discussed many times already.
Switching to desktop makes your gfx card loose the FSAA settings. Thats why blur works.

Interesting, havent thought about that, but I dont see it losing the setting in the game or on the ATI control panel. It still uses the AA when I go back to full screen. Yes the difference it that obvious , this game looks so much better with AA.
