I just bought SH3 (no addons or anything) off steam for 7.49. Seems like it will play easily enough on my laptop, so thats why i bought it....i knew it was an older game. but here i find a thriving community! what does everyone play? is SH3 still played online? do i need to buy more stuff to play online?

Welcome Narcoticrex,

Yes SH3 is getting sort of aged, but as you noticed, it's like a fine bottle of wine. It just keeps getting better with age.

What ever you do, do not buy anything for SH3, all addons are freeware. Check out these 2 sites : BtS-Mods (http://www.bts-mods.com/) and Subsim (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/index.php) .

As far as playing online, you may want to check into joining a flotilla. Here are a few in this sticky : Manuals, Tools, Mods, Tweaks, Online Flotillas, & Short Stories!!! (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/2811003835)

Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions you may have, that's what we're here for.

Hi narcoticrex http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Before you install any mods, make sure that the game is patched to version 1.4b. As you've downloaded the game, it's probably pre-patched. To check, read the 'How to check which patch you have installed' section of this post:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2881085392/m/7261080164

My advice is to get used to the game without any mods installed for a while. If you play the game un-modded at first (maybe for 10 patrols or so), you will have a good understanding of what the stock game can and can't do. Then you will understand better what each mod does, so you can make a more informed choice about which mods to try out.

Then, when you're ready to try some mods, you'll get plenty of good advice and recommendations from the guys here http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

The manual that comes with SH3 is not that great... You may find that the online SH3 Community Manual provides more assistance if you get stuck (see the link in my signature). Or feel free to ask us.

Let us know how you get on with the game! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree with VikingGrandad.

Get a feel for the game first. Vanilla SH3 is far easier than GWX or any other super mod.

Their are hundreds of mods out their for SH3. Endless ocean for endless fun.

Welcome aboard and happy hunting dude.
