Does the markings on the clock (above the telescope controls) have any significance? In each "planet quarter" there is a circle and a line at different times...
Or was it perhaps something they didn't have time to follow up?
I have completed the age btw.

I had the same confusion. Thought I didn't finish Todelmer because I hadn't figured out the meaning of that one. Maybe it's a lost puzzle, like:
-the steam pipes in the Shaft with the circulating blue marbles in it (is repeated in the room with the fan)?
-the telescope like machines in every room in the Shaft (whith three red lights on it, but you can't touch the symbol on the left side)?
-the coloured blankets lying on the beds?
-the second windmill on Laki'ahn?
-again on Todelmer on the second pedestal the stairway that leads downstairs?

It's not a puzzle, I think it's just a clock. The circulating blue marbles in the steam pipes is just to show that the steam is on(the steam makes them circulate).

I really wanted these things to do something. They just seemed so...obvious. Often lit in a way that implied they did something.

-the steam pipes in the Shaft with the circulating blue marbles in it (is repeated in the room with the fan)? Those aren't steam pipes... they carry fresh air to the Cavern when you turn the fan on.

the telescope like machines in every room in the Shaft Do you mean the hologram players? Or the larger devices? Those were introduced in Uru. A similar device in the Gahreesen Age was how we obtained our KI, a D'ni communication device worn around the hand.

I think the "clock" in Todelmer is not a clock at all, but part of a telescope drive to keep the big 'scopes aligned properly as Todelmer rotates. Of course, this means having a sense of time---but I don't think the device is there principally to tell time. Notice how much faster it runs when you activate the Bahro symbol that accelerates time?

I liked the clock. It had me wondering what its purpose was, until the moment I walked into the room while time had been sped up. Suddenly I realised it was to give people a big clue about what was happening, and to marvelous effect! It was a great visual.

Mowog - I think you're right about the KI dispenser. It took me a few seconds to come to that conclusion myself. I never thought of them as telescopes, but then the first one we saw was on and functional. We didn't see the ones in Eder Tomahn until later.

You know, you could be right in a way, though not entirely, I suppose. The thing is, the telescopes are stationary, otherwise the contents of the four displays would not be moving with the rest of the planet/ring motion (it makes sense to me now that Todelmer, the green planet, orbits around the big one with the rings). But I guess it is an astronomical clock of sorts (i.e., the time measured in the form of the planet revolutions.

Aach! You're right! Even though I stood by the 'scope controls and watched as the Keep hove into view during accelerated time, I failed to make the connection.

I do think it goes to show that the authors of Myst V are better game developers than they are astronomers: a telescope that didn't track the heavens would be a royal pain in the butt to use.

OK, so Todelmer is a moon of the ringed planet. If we could see more of the clock, more clearly, perhaps we could figure out its unit of measure.

I don't think it's a D'ni clock - at least, not one that keeps D'ni time, as there aren't 25 symbols on it. It could be a timekeeping device for the moon, or possibly the planet below (above?), but I dunno... the time of day never appears to change. Perhaps it's a technical limitation.

*shrug*

a telescope that didn't track the heavens would be a royal pain in the butt to use. You're right. I have such a telescope, and twiddling the dials to keep objects in view is discouraging, to say the least. Now if I knew more about how to properly align its equatorial mount, it might not be so bad... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif
