hydrophone a noob question

when i use the hydrophone and i hear a contact,
is the bearing displayed by the degrees on the disc and bearing on the display related to the compass or the heading of the sub.

fi the contact heared on 90 dgrs, is that due east on compass , or 90 dgrs right in relation to heading of the sub.

Its the bearing in relation to you. If the sub changes course then so will the bearing.

Its based on the heading of the sub. Top of the hydrophone dial is the direction the sub is travelling.

thought so , i was "chasing" a contact and could never find it LOL , mmhh needs some calculations then to change the reading to new heading of sub

Yeah so basically the top of the hydrophone is the front of the sub, left and right on the phone is either left and right of the sub and the bottom of the phone is the back of the sub (you can hear your engines).

Took me a while to work that out.

and i never listen with my engines running due to too much noise from them ( i would have figured it out when there were, i now see )
