Place the smoke object on the map. (smoke 7 works good.)
Zoom in the map to detail level.
Select the smoke object.
Hit 'Enter' for the 3D view.
Hold down the 'F4' key and move right click the mouse, in that order. Otherwise the smoke object will not move. As you move the mouse the smoke will move up and down. Releasing the 'F4' key will allow you to move the smoke object on the horizontal plane. since the smoke "puffs", move the smoke down a bit inside the stack and the emission appears steady.
TIP:
To place multiple same smokes for objects like ships or the factory that have multiple stacks, after placing your first smoke, hit the "Insert" key and duplicate object will appear at the same height. Just right click to move the smoke to the desired stack.
NOTE:
Remember that once the building/ship is destroyed the smoke remains, floating in the air. You might want to take this into consideration.
Hope this helps.

Would that trick work for other objects? Like a bridge or lights? Or anything in general I guess?
Sometimes I make oddball maps for my clan and I to play on like Air-Races or flying through hangars. This sounds like it could be a great trick.

Lights yes, other objects maybe, depending on object. It's trial and error for me anyways, often I completely forget you can raise certain objects because it seems most don't allow it...but lights, definitely

Last time I checked only certain lights & smoke would both move and appear where you moved them to in the final mission. There are a couple that you can change height for in FMB but show up at default ground level in mission IIRC, so always test fly the mission with a static camera even if it looks ok in FMB
