View Full Version : TimeSplitters Gold - A TimeSplitters game that I am making!

I am new here, but I am not new to TimeSplitters, having owned all three of FRD's TS games as well as Second Sight. I am an active member of the TimeSplitters Music Box forum, where I am pretty well known.

This topic is not really Haze related, but it is FRD related, which I hope is good enough!

Anyway, about this game that I am making, TimeSplitters Gold (TSG for short). I am using Game Maker (Game Maker (http://www.gamemaker.nl/)) to develop it. It is in it's pretty early stages and is not too good really. TSG concentrates wholly on the arcade aspect of TS, comprising of multiplayer maps and playable characters (a full list can be found below).

Download TimeSplitters Gold (http://files.filefront.com/TSG_V34zip/;7491607;/fileinfo.html) - from FileFront

TSG is a Top Down Shooter for the PC, it is around 5.5mb in size.

In this version:

<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>39 playable characters
<LI>4 maps; VR and Bunker (with music) and Hospital and Chinese (without music)
<LI>One mode of play; deathmatch
<LI>Humanistic AI (OK, well maybe not humanistic but its better than anything I've done before)
<LI>Just one gun http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif (more to be added in next version)
<LI>Invisibility power up
<LI>Nice (in my opinion) menu screens.
<LI>7 bots.
<LI>Anaconda (with music)
<LI>Fully (nearly fully) customisable Arcade Matches
<LI>Finished scoring system
In final version (hopefully):

<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>50 characters at least (maybe over 100 if the game size doesn't get too big)
<LI>Most of the maps from TS1, TS2 and TS:FP (this should include music)
<LI>Vehicles?
<LI>Lots of guns, at least 5
<LI>Mapmaker?
<LI>Several modes of play, including: deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the bag, virus, flame tag, vampire, monkey assisstant etc etc
<LI>More that I can't think of!
All graphics were done by either me or Camboy (you won't know him... probably) and the music was done by Monocledsardine (original music by Graeme Norgate and Christian Marcussen (.mp3 files, too big), Monocledsardine used these to create our very own soundtrack in .midi files).

Please play this game and give me some feedback. Comments and critisicm is wanted.

This game is not approved by FRD, although I do not think it is illegal as I am not making a profit from TSG, so basically it's just a fan creation. No harm done. I have emailed FRD (R-one-oh-seven) about it, but I have not had a reply. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Cheers, Cob.

Oh and by the way, you may find it interesting to know that I live less than a mile from FRD's base thing. I live on the opposite side of the M1 near the Novotel (check on FRD's site to see where the Novotel is!)

Heh, I wish that would happen, I'd love to work for FRD, although I am too young at the moment for a full time job. A game made with a freeware program would probably not catch the interests of companies at the head of the gaming industries. Looks like I will have to take up 3D modelling in Maya instead!

OK, seeing as File Front's server has been down for quite a while I have decided to upload TSG at several other hosts.

TSG - from YourFileHost (http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=other&file=TSG_V.1.1.exe)

TSG - from FileFactory (http://www.filefactory.com/file/e27f2f/)

Hopefully these links will work!

Have fun!

Did you make the VR MIDI file? It's very well done. I've got the Anaconda MIDI on my phone (few people realise polyphonic ringtones are MIDI files...).

The file on filefront, when downloaded is unregnized by xp, you have to rename it TSG.exe and it will recognize it as an exe.

When in game press [F1] for game information. The game information contains the controls, the current game specifics and the credits.

The VR .midi was not made by me. It was made by Monocledsardine who is doing the music for me.

The VR theme can be found here - VR .midi (http://files.filefront.com/VR_thememid/;5147171;;/fileinfo.html)

And a Bunker theme which does not feature in the current version can be downloaded here - Bunker .midi (http://files.filefront.com/BD_thememid/;5424365;;/fileinfo.html) - this one is not as accurate as the VR .midi but good none the less.

Monocledsardine is currently working on the TS:FP Title Screen music, I will keep you updated on his progress if you want.

Do you have any more comments about the game, gameplay in particular? Any improvements that should be made?

OK DUDE I LOVED THIS GAME! its a bit off with some stuff but its great. as for the music ... i dont like it as much as the mp3's you can download online... can you use mp3's in gamemaker? because it would sound betterhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ... overall its fun although no bullet sprites is a bit of a drag. also maybe obstacles could be placed around the map http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif 8/10 on this version!

Xylaquin
09-29-2006, 08:42 AM
using MP3's would enlarge the size. Although what difference would it make if the plan is to make more levels characters etc.

cob_shaw
09-29-2006, 10:33 AM
Right the problem with mp3s is that they are on average about 3 megabytes. About 10 songs would give a size of approximately 30mb, add on that the other things; sprites, codes, maps, backrounds, sounds etc and you get 40mb.

Game Maker struggles to cope with 20mb, its best working under 10mb or else it creates huge lag. Working with .midis not only lessens the size but also it makes TSG slightly different from the proper TS series!

Hey that's pretty cool. Just downloaded it and played it, very nice.

You still working on it, or is this going to be the final version?

Anyways, just some things that could be improved. Um, more guns, no need for more characters really, a few more levels, AI should be harder and shouldn't just stand around waiting...

Um, a few more mode perhaps...music was good. Um, that's about all. It's really good, liked it for sure.

Thanks buddo. I am trying to work on this when I get the time, although that ain't often! Guns... I have drawn most of the images for the characters with a machine gun but the programming needs to be done. Then perhaps a rocket launcher? Or grenades? Hospital level is coming on nicely and the AI should be improved once I get more items on the levels... hopefully! The AIs a bugger! Thinking about virus but can't quite figure out the code... perhaps I should do Team Deathmatch?

Music was made by Monocledsardine, who finished off a title theme just yesterday...

Hope to update soon!

I dunno about Team Deathmatch...

But the idea of Virus or Flame Tag is brilliant. Hopefully that code thing works out for you, lol.

Sorry the program that I used to create the game (Game Maker (http://www.gamemaker.nl)) doesn't support Mac. Or at least I don't think it does. So no, I cannot make it for Mac, as it is impossible with Game Maker.

I am very, very sorry that you can't play. If there was some way to do it... then I would.

Once again, I am so sorry that you can't play TSG. If you get windows be sure to play though!

Nice game.
(I had no idea what I was doing for the first 15 minutes but then I relized I had to use the mouse.)

I honestly wouldn't have the patients to make a game like that. Again, nice job.

TimeSplitters Gold is now being made by TeamSplitters:

Cob - Team Leader and Spriting
Penguinlord - Programming
Project 90 - Spriting

We have decided to totally reprogram the game engine and as a result the next version is slightly lacking in some areas but also improved in others. This version has only one gun, the AI isn't finished and also has a few glitches. However, the menus have been totally revamped and several new characters and two new maps have been added. See first post for details.

TimeSplitters Gold V.3.1 (http://files.filefront.com/TSG_V31zip/;6751511;;/fileinfo.html)

Thanks, TeamSplitters

Coul;dn't download it at the present time, but have you ever played Counterstrike 2D? It's exactly the same thing, only cs. Incidently I made a mod for it to make it TimeSplitters 2D (although it was pretty bad).

In anycase, I think you should take a look:

you might get some ideas from it. (It has a mapmaker)

Update!

TSG V.3.2 (http://files.filefront.com/TSG_V32zip/;7192142;/fileinfo.html)

I added some information about each character as well as some pictures and voice clips. Our lead programmers gone, so I can't really do much.

lol - just tried it. Still freaky hearing my "bunker" music in that MIDI version http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

cob_shaw
04-11-2007, 05:13 AM
Haha! I bet it is! Trouble is, the MIDI artist who made that's left, so now I don't have anymore MIDIs. And my programmer left, leaving me with a half finished AI. So the projects pretty much at a stand still until I get some more people in for the team.

Thanks for playing.

Oh, by the way, TSG has had over 500 downloads since V.1 was first released in June 06.
