I have made up a booklet I have found to be of use with identification screenshots and relevant data all in place including ship lengths, and separated by class. There would be 3/5 ships per page, no leafing through the ID booklet.

I could not upload the booklet file so I have placed the screens and info below for you to make a quick reference book with.

This is how it works. You look for the image, if it is a match (in your printed booklet), the stats are displayed underneath. The ship name of the class, height (m) (useful for distance estimaton TDC), draft (m) (CORRECTION; (thanks to kholstedt) means the distance between the keel and the waterline thus deeper draft means more for the torpedo to hit), length (m) (good for timing by measuring the time it takes for a ship to pass your sight reticule), tonnage that will be added if a kill is scored and the speed in knots (I always make it half the max if it is medium speed in a task force, but I find many DDs to sweep at 12 knots).

I found it improved my kill rate, amongst warships anyway as I am using manual TDC.

Anything for you, dudes! Glad someone found it to be of use. I will do commercial ships on Friday after I am done with this week. I should have the weekenf off and I will soend some of it putting together more stuff like this.

I have printed a handbook of all that and my kill rate increased to about 30% extra provided I am in good firing positions.

In the real-life Navy, draft means the distance from the waterline to the bottom of the ship. The distance from the main deck to the waterline is called freeboard. Course, you can call it anything you want as long as you explain what you mean, which you did.

Wud anyone like a commercialship version by the weekend?

does anyone find making a handbook with that list useful? What were your experiences?

Mine were great. I can recall many a great battle using that list, usefull most of all for range determination so i can blast them with my brand spanking new 5" cannon!

For you I would do that. Ok, this Friday after finishing my exam, to relax post-exam, I'll generate a Commercial Ship ID booklet.

Thanks, I'll be fine. It is my last ever undergraduate exam and after 5 years that is a good thing. I am doing a Masters Degree, will graduate this summer. Then onto to do a PhD!

I did a masters degree in business after leaving the Airforce, In Universidade catolica Portuguesa, but then i got ofered a job as a civil aviation pilot so...i never used it, but it was great fun, im thinking of an MBA but 4 kids...and a lot of airmiles make that a bit dificult. SO i stick to SH4 instead...but no manual targeting....i do numbers the all day...you should get yourself an EB6 calculator, they are pretty cheap, made of alu and you can use it to convert and calculate most parameters in the game, researche it on the net. there are electronic ones now, but i still use my airforce one. I find it add`s some feeling to the game.

As long as you enjoyed your masters degree you did not waste your time with it. I am hoping to make use of mine and do a PhD.

Anyway back to topic, Silent Hunter 4 is a godsend, it is not addictive to me as playing on 100% realism doesn't quite do that but by god isn't it satisfying to play when you have time? My head would explode from the stresses of life if I did not have a game like this one to sit down with and let it take me in it's world.

it certainly does the trick for me too...I have to spend my day just making sure that everyone keeps it under raps and that NOTHING goes amiss, so when I get home its like im carrying a ton of bricks, I should have listened to my mother and become a surgeon instead. so i just load a game and i just love to navigate and listen to the sound of the waves on my sub...i know it sounds stupid but it does the trick for me...i do get a litlle flack from the WIFE front, she says im worse then the kids but you got to understand her...she is after all german, she likes it quiet...and being a portuguese it's like...5.1 surround and LOUD lol

Thanks muchly for this. If I gave you the relevant data, would you be willing to superimpose target points for torpedoes? I've been experimenting with weak points on some capital ships and merchants.

That sounds quite like a caper. Sure, I could do that. Something else to do on Friday Post exam! As well as commercial ships I can do that and superimpose them here.

P'raps I can mark the weak spots in the images with red crosses and submit them here. If not, I will just state where ie (f.t.) for under fore turret, (u.a.m.) for under aft mast, (u.c) for under cabin, etc.

If you send it to me I will edit it and resize to avatar requirements for you. Avatars and signatures are easy if you know how to do it. You can crop out bit of pic you want with Corel Photopaint or something like that, and resize to avatar size rules such as 60 pixels wide and high, I think. Make sure it is a universal jpeg (.jpg) file though.

You will need an image hosting website like image shack and register, it is free. You can then get images uploaded and use the url in image properties to paste them in the relevant personal profile sections in this forum and paster between tags. Would be cool if you take a screenshot of game, cut out the bit you want, resize to 150 pixels high, and edit with text then submit in forums after uploading in image shack.
