So i saw that cool movie called http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif "U-571" (i think http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif)and a scene from that movie gave me an idea.So this is the "field manual" of how to sink a destroyer.
First of all make sure all your tubes are loaded and set depth to 4 meters for the torpedoes and select magnetic piston. Once you spoted a destroyer make damn sure he spots you too.
Turn towards the destroyer at ahead flank and go to periscope depth. Raise you periscope so the "target" sees you from time to time. OPEN THE TUBE OF THE TORPEDO YOU PLAN ON USING.The ship will go straight towards you. When its about 600 meters from you and IT GOES ON A STRAIGHT LINE, fire the torpedoe and GO TO CRASH DIVE IN EVERY DIRECTION YOU WANT.IF the ship maintains its course you will have a HIT!!! So this is how you do it but make sure you dont stay surfaced for too long cause you might eat some sheels...i did!!!I attacked a convoy and sunk all four escort ships which were all destroyers, then i surfaced the boat and i started to have fun with the unarmed and unprotected ships. Ill sink *** many *** i can on my next patrol and ill post the captain log for you to see. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gifHappy Hunting.
NOW I HAVE A QUESTION!!!!!!!!
Whats the deal with the cunning towers in GWX???I have the IXB and i have the same tower for a year now although the components table shoows that i should have it.Thanks

One more thing. THe destroyer always goes on a strat run and its not able to hear the torpedoe because the noise of your sub covers the noise of the fish.

"600 meters"
it can evade from this distance..
take 300m, it will get close to you but its kaput after torpedo strike http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

well, i have no idea about this, but i am happy with the IXB/1 tower

not realy, if they spot it the destroyer will evade, they are kind of deaf to, they never hear a torp http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Course torpidos take about 450 meters to arm. You may get rammed.
I go that on the surface firing at 600 meters (blows off his stern) and crash-diving as I fire.
He will try to ram me therefore not evade.
As soon as I am at 15 meters I swerve port or starboard just in case.
Usually works.

I know, I know ~ Deck guns on them.

Only ever been hit once. By aorvette 2500 meters away as I took on the Black Swan 750 meters away http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Are you saying that there are no alternative conning towers in the "conning towers" menu? To get a new conning tower, you have to choose an available tower from the "conning towers" menu (double-click it to replace your existing tower) - same for other upgrades in the other menus, e.g. diesel engine superchargers, improved hydrophones, radar equipment, etc. Some upgrades are free, but most you have to 'pay' for, using the renown points you've earned on patrol.

I hope that helps!

As far as I'm aware, all types of U-boat torpedoes have to run for a minimum of 300m before they arm. So if you waited until a destroyer heading towards your boat was just 300m away, by the time the torpedo hit, the destroyer would be too close (maybe only 150-200m) and therefore the torpedo would not detonate.

gas torp, fire when the ship is at 350m and it hits when it gets to 300m http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

"U571" realy sux and is in NO WAY historical correct, the ami's didnt had a german sub that time, neither was there anywhere a boarding from sub on sub... its what i call "holywood bullcrap" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

If memory serves the UK/RN captured the first enigma machine in 1942/3... then the next and the next and the next.... the oonly one the US got was in 1945 wasn't it? As I recall they had a list of dates & ships for enigma captures at the end of the film.

An even safer way to sink a destroyer would be to follow the same method above, but this time by moving away from the destroyer and using your rear tubes to sink it. I always try to save the front tubes for the big ships.

What U-571 lacks in accuracy and fact, it makes up for in telling a good story.
