Using Thiefs?

How do you use thiefs? I can't seem to figure it out.

You can only use the thief on enemy buildings. Right click the enemy castle while having selected the thief, and he will go in and steal informations from your enemy. In the Church he will steal the spended money and damage the city reputation. At the Storehouse he steals Goods and at all other city buildings he steals money. After visiting ONE of the main buildings, you have to send him into your own castle to fullfill his task, the city buildings can be visited till he has got the maximum amount of gold he is capable to carry (I think it was 500), then he has to go to your home castle anyway

i've wondered about using the thief but haven't gotten around to it yet EXCEPT when he was scripted in the scenario. can you "make" one in the castle and then use him for what you describe anytime, during any scenario after he becomes "makable" at your castle?

also, what happens when he's seen by enemy soldiers? is he automatically dead or just becomes visible to all and could be killed if attacked? does he just need to return to your castle to become "invisible" again?

Depending on where he is when detected he can escape and hide and wait for a better opportunity. I have been detected and successfully escaped being killed.
