Hey everybody http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, well I noticed that we have a few musicians on the forums, so myself and UK (UnDead_Knight1) decided to make this thread.
You can talk about what instrument you play, or you can ask for help & advice and things like that.
This thread is for any instrument you wish to talk about.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, so I might as well go first http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I play the guitar, and have been playing for about 6 months (not too long)
I have a Squire Stratocaster, and soon to get a new guitar and a new amp. (the Spider II 112 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif)
uhm, thats it for now, I will probably add some more later but I shall leave it for other people to join in http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Cool! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Well, I only play the piano (that means I also play keyboard) and have been playing for two years I think, but other then that I don't play any instruments. I know how to play a few songs on guitar, but I'm not any good.
Now let's see how many musicians we've got here.

Been playing the acoustic guitar for 5 years now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.I went to music school (along with my normal school), got one more year to finish it lol, but unfortunately I can't do it right now.
But I only do the classical stuff - Sor, Tarrega, Carcassi e.t.c. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Well... Recently, me and some friends of mine have founded a band. And I have been asigned the duty of playing at the guitar, and lead singing... I have absolutely no idea how to play the guitar, but I do have a guitar and I`m in for guitar lessons... As for singing I`ve had lessons when I was younger... and it`s no problem for me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif... Well... anyways... wish me luck http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif For me, just now, it`s an opportunity to dream, but it`ll get more serious when we`ll learn more...
Except for that, I know very well how to play the harmonica http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh such a nice thread!http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gifhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Well let's see, I play the piano, and I have been doing that for...let's see...for 13 years now. And keyboard as well of course, but I prefer playing on a regular piano.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
And I also play the guitar, have been doing that for around 3 years, had an electric one which I sold eventually to get some money for something I needed. So now I only own an acoustic one.
And then I also play the accordeon, which is part of the swedish folklore, and I've been playing that for years and years, not sure how many, probably like 8-9 years I guess.
What else, oh I also own a instrument which is called "nyckelharpa", which I suppose could be translated into "keyharp". It's a swedish instrument, also very much used in the folklore, I can play it a little, not very good though, it's quite difficult, so I would need someone to teach me how to really play it properly.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I don't play any instruments but I'm VERY interested in buying an electric guitar. The sounds...are just amazing, breathtaking, and being a rock'n roll fan I feel obliged to learn to play a guitar. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
I would greatly appreciate any advice regarding this. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I play guitar for 2 and a half years, drumz for 4 and a half years, I play bass also, but very little, I usually play the bass like playing the guitar (like Jimi Hendrix's bassist), I also play the electric sitar, all instruments I learnt to play by myself, no teacher.
my rig usually goes like this: guitar (usually use explorers or flying V's)-> tuner-> dunlop crybabay->tube screamer->boss DM-2analog delay-> 80' JCM 800 or mesa boogie triple recto-> the usual studio stuff
I use a spider II 112 for practice
I play also the accoustic guitar, and have a mexican one, and a vintage Yamaha one
I used to be a tube freak, but after seeing the line 6 products, I'm not that much a tube fanatic anymore, and I'm gonna buy the line 6 vetta II as soon as I get the money.
I usually use V's and explorers, sometimes use strats, sometimes use ML (very little), but never a telecaster
I also have a signature V guitar (a guitar that was custom made for me from Ed Roman's shop), it was on my last sig, here it is for those who havn't seen it yet:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b130/UnDead-Knight/guitar-sig.jpg
I also play in a band as lead guitarist and background vocals, in some songs we add keyboard, and as Von (the drummer) is the only one who knows how to play the keyboard, I take the task of drumming and David (the vocalist and background guitar) plays the lead and rythem guitar parts.
I usually use dunlop tortex .88mm (green) picks, but know how to fingerpick, oh and I'm an all downstrokes dude, as it gives much more natural tone than altirnative picking (up and down strokes)
finally, a friendly advice to those who wanna play guitar, don't go to music school, or get a teacher or what not, the internet is full of tabs, and they're pretty easy to read, and this way you get to develop your own style, which what *realy* matters, teachers would bore you with some supid exercises, while you can play the songs you want (start with smoke on the water by deep purple).
besides all those famous guitarists never whent to a teacher, will atleast the ones on the top 20 list didn't go for sure.
@Razor, I already gave you an advice on what guitar you should buy in the post your picture thread, any other questions are welcome http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
man, I talk a lot when it comes to music

I played piano for 3 years. Now I play drum set, and I've been playing for 4 years. I'm the drummer of the band The Premonitions. I've also recently started trumpet. I'm really good at all of them, if I do say so myself.

If you've already decided wht kind of guitar you're after (and it seems UnDead_Knight has already advised you on this), the only other advice I can give you is: don't get stuck with a lemon. Guitars of the same model are not all the same, and if they've got a lemon in stock then it's the one they're going to try and sell you, especially if you're a beginner. You really need to try a couple and pick the best one.
UnDead_Knight sounds like he could tell you exactly what to look for, though it's a bit harder to try them out if you can't actually play a guitar... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif If you know anyone who plays, bring them along and they can try them out for you.

I can play 'cool cats' on the recorder. That is as far as my music career went. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif
We have a bands form at my former school all the time, students can rent the equipment and instruments free if they want to play to other students. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I play bass. I've got a band, we play mostly classic rock stuff (zeppelin, the doors, grand funk railroad, hendrix, neil young etc etc...) and some of our own stuff (our lead singer is an amazing songwriter http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif).

Piano for 10? years. Went to the Clairinet which didn't last that long b/c my heart was set on the Sax http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Nothing says Jazz like the sax! Well, I'd advise to get a package to start off with, with a simple "Fender Strat." or something, and if you make good progress you can then move on to other more 'advanced' equipment. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
I'm just moving on at the moment http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
I hope to get in a band soon, but could take a while.
and I'm investing in a 'Spider II 112' amp, it makes some seriously cool sounds.

if you really want a good effects proccesor, that would give you the type of sound vintage analog I'd go with line 6 products, the PODxt Live (http://www.line6.com/podxtlive/index.html) is an awesome product, but you need to set your amp as flat as possible, and don't expect it to sound good out of the box, as the presets suck, but after some tweaking it sounds awesome, and it's very versatile, it costs 400$.
If you're looking for an amp and effects proccesor, the line 6 Vetta II (http://www.line6.com/vetta_ii/US/) is the most ideal option that you can get, as it imulates most of the famous amps, and it has the option of 2 amps at once, plus it has the double tracker option for getting that studio doubletracking effect live, plus it has build in effects, so no need for buying effect pedals seperatly (it has both stomp boxes, and studio effects), another point for the vetta is that it acctually has that tube warmth, not found on any digital amp (that's not from line6).
PS: don't expect the models to sound exactly like their tube counterparts, but they sound good on their own, and that what really matters (they imulate the sound with 96% though). the amp head costs 1700$, and the speaker cab (412) costs 600$ (or you can get the combo version with 212 speakers for 1700$), the only downside I can think is that the foot controller isn't bundled with the amp, and it costs 400$ for the board (there are cheaper pedal boards, but if you want total control I don't recommend them) (and again the presets suck, but with tweaking you get awesome tones)
I tried the Vetta II in the music store, and it's awesome, gona buy it as soon as I get the money, I use the PODxt Live in my recordings.
The Wah in both cases is good, although I still prefer to use my Dunlop crybaby 95Q (http://www.jimdunlop.com/products/electronics/crybaby/products/95q/index.html) as it has auto switch off (an on), and I prefer the crybaby's sound (I got it for 100$)

Woah! thanks for the help mate http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
but DUDE! $400 = Rs. 24000
thats enuff to get me 2 yamaha guitars plus a cheap acoustic http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
but i have my eye on a processor that costs only $ 166
its got 150 effects and its got a wa-wa pedal and a repeater and another 148 tytos effects http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
but first i need an amp...and thats for another $ 100
The effect proccesor is called "RP 200"
its great http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Edit: here it is

If you mean the digitech RP200, then yeah, it's a good proccesor, never tried it myself though, so I can't really give my review on it.
if you need an amp, to really have a good sounding amp you should pay atleast 300$, as that's the min. price for a good sounding amp, the Spider II 112 is a great 75W amp that costs 300$, and it has lots of distorstion (insane distortion), and good blues tones, with good clean sounds too.any amp cheaper than that wouldn't sound good (unless it's a Marshall or a Fender).
and for the record, Yamaha only makes good accoustics, their electrics suck, currently the best electric makers are ESP, Gibson, Jackson, and Ed Roman (that will build you anything you want) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Oh, and did anyone here played a 7 string guitar?

The sbest price I've found for the Spider II 112 in the UK is around â£200 whihc is a decent price, and this amp is probably one of the best you can get for this amount of money.
Information for Spider II 112 amp here. (http://uk.line6.com/spiderii/112.html)

how bout a 5-neck guitar?
http://www.edromanguitars.com/featured/images/Kra_5neck_150.jpg
so, Dan where do you live? cause I sure would like to buy stuff cheaper
oh, snd 7-string guitar is cool, you get an extra string for bass, so it's pretty cool, but not as cool as a 12 string guitar, cause that tone is simply cool, especialy an accoustic 12 strings

@UK: I can't actually imagine someone playing that 5 neck http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif that would be very funny http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

lol that's one funny looking guitar, and somebody does play (or played) the 5 neck, cause otherwise he wouldn't ask Ed to build him this guitar.
and you're looking for a a wah pedal, eh? will the best advice would be the Dunlop crybaby 95Q (http://www.jimdunlop.com/products/electronics/crybaby/products/95q/index.html) a truely great wah pedal, and the only one I could play Jimi's voodoo child with the exact (will almost exact) tone Jimi had back then, will atleast without openning it, and tweaking it (and I destroyed several stompboxes this way lol, but now I know what I'm doing), anyway, back to the wah, it cost me 100$
EDIT: man thats one cool guitar http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
and if you want to know what's crazy, me and david once put on our guitars the thickest strings available to guitar, and set our amps to max bass, and played bass for the bassist, now that's crazy, and earthshaking

nice, and I have to disagree with you about bass, it all depends on the bassist, metallica in the older days, back when Cliff was alive, they had an exelant bass, and very noticabe ("orion" even has a bass solo).
but yeah, guitars are better, and more versatile.
PS: what's the point with headless guitars?

WHAT? Cliff Burton's dead? that's sad... anyway. I'm more of a singer. I have a dark, sensual blues voice. and if I ever joins a band I will do my career on things like jimi hendrix and jim morrison (from the doors) got famous on; exposing myself on stage, screaming a lot, smash instruments on stage and dying when I'm 27 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif I played clarinett when I was younger, but that wasn't very groovy. I'm trying to learn to play guitar, but I'm planning on getting a banjo, that's a bit more original http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

@tiger: Cliff died in a car accedent back in 1986 (after releasing their master of puppets album), and banjo is cool, but I prefer sitar for cool non guitar tones.
@Jaymez: just go to your local store and ask him for the thickest available, I used a .36
and for Jimi's stuff, I just found out URL=http://www.jimdunlop.com/products/electronics/hendrix/index.html]this[/URL]. look at the second one, it has a build in fuzz face, but I prefer to use the 95Q, as it has more wah possibilities (including jimi's wah) plus an auto off (and on), and just plug into a fuzz face, besides this way my rig looks cooler http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Sandwarrior1990

@UK: .36 woah! I take it thats in cm?
and that fuzz is very cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
and for thta kind of price, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif, looks very interesting http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
and, whats with the slide bars you can buy for a guitar? do they actually get used that much, or are they just for every now and then?
UnDead_Knight1
02-08-2006, 01:59 PM
the .36 is the second string (from above) when using .10 gauge, the thinnest gauge
and those slide sticks are just to help you slide long slides on all the strings, I can't really describe it in words, but if you've seen metallica's S&M video, at the start of fuel, when Kirk make his guitar sound like a racing car, that's what the sliding sticks are for, although if you ask me, I say they are useless, as you can slide perfectly fine even without them

oh right, I think I saw Kirk's step dad showing Rob something with it in an extra on "Some Kind Of Monster"
...but I suppose if you're doing a special bit on sliding and don't want to cut your fingers up on the bottom string http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif hah, man I hate it when that happens.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
UnDead_Knight1
02-08-2006, 02:12 PM
yeah, that would be a nasty cut, but when you slide this way you usually woun't slide with speed, meaning that the propability of you cutting your finger is almost zero.
btw, I don't seem to like the way rob looks with a suite, he just looks like an intellegant gorilla that got shaved and learned to walk straight, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif but, I do like the way he plays the bass, he's better than Jason, although I liked Jason alot, and the way he sings some songs, but Cliff was the best bassist metallica had, he could make his bass sound a bit like a guitar, pretty cool stuff
Sandwarrior1990
02-08-2006, 11:33 PM
well yeah Robert definately doesnt look good in a suit, end of story http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
..but he's better than Jason, and yeah I also liked Jason a lot, but I don't think anyone wil actually ever fully replace Clff, although Robert is giving it a good try.

I hope to get in a band soon, but could take a while.
and I'm investing in a 'Spider II 112' amp, it makes some seriously cool sounds.
Thanks. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I think I've heard of those. there is a music store close to where I live so I'll go and investigate a little bit. I do remember someone mentioned to me earlier there might be a package which comes with a guitar, a 10-20W AMP, gig-bag and a cable. I guess that's all I need then. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That might be a good idea actually. I think I know a person who plays guitars so I might as well ask him to help me out on choosing something good. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

oh and @UK: You know the "Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro" music recording system, is it still worth buying that if I have a normal stock sound system that came with the PC?
because I thought that it wouldn't matter much as I'll only be using it for making songs, and if they are any good (with luck http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif) burn them to CD for my own listening.
UnDead_Knight1
02-10-2006, 08:31 AM
yeah, the SB X-Fi Elite Pro is pretty damn cool sound card by creative, they really outdone themselves with this one, and if you're only gonna buy it for recording, I'd still say it's worth it, as it's about the same price (and cheaper than some) as other recording sound cards in it's range, and it would come with a recording software (it's the light edition, but it's pretty damn good if you're gonna be using it for personal recording), the softwar is cubase LE, and comes with amplitube LE, that will give you the effects for the guitar, all you need would be a guitar, and a cable, but I would advice you get a nice pair of cups (headphones, studio talk) for monitoring, and I would advice getting a wireless ones, as they are easier, and try to get them in the amatur-pro range, the ones I use in the studio cost me 90$, but it's a reasonable price, especially cause the card has a new technology that would give you surround sound via headphones (good for night gaminghttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), anyway, back to recording, will get the cards with headphones, as the speakers that come with the PC usually don't have enough power to allow you to monitor your sound.
besides, it's an exellant card for gaming (cause of the 64MB of build in RAM, and for playing music)

I don't really know if the items in ebay are really worth buying second hand, but if it's in a good guality, I'd say it's a bargin
for the guitarists, and bassists among you, here is a good site where you can buy your future guitars and basses: www.edromanguitars.com (http://www.edromanguitars.com)
it has guitars and basses for beginners to the most advanced guitars and basses, ranging from 120$ to 5000$ (or even more) guitars and basses, they would also build you any guitar or bass you'd like, according to your own references ranging from wood type, to design, to pickup types, pretty damn cool stuff, I got my venom vee guitar cutom maded from there (picture of it in page one of this thread).
oh, and for those who wonder what sound card we were discussing here's a picture of it:

yep, that's the main idea, that's how the venom vee was born (although I'm not that artistic but I absolotly love V guitars, you can find designs he liked in his site), but I would recommend that you give him a specifec info on how you want the guitar to look like, and in what color you want it in, and any artistic design you want, cause that way you'd know exactly what you're gonna get, and there would be no misunderstandings between you and the builder (he would build you a 100 neck guitar if you have the money to pay for it)

V neck's are some of te best looking, probably the best actually,
one bass neck and one norma neck, that would be very cool http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
and i thought 12 string guitars, just had 2 strings for each machine head, or do they actually have 12 machine-heads ( http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif!!)
UnDead_Knight1
02-11-2006, 12:31 PM
it's actually called V body, not V neck, and yeah, they're one of the best designs available, along with the explorer (most famous explorer user is Jaymez Hetfield from metallica):
http://www.getthatsound.com/General%20Assets/Images/Hetfield.jpg
although I don't like ML guitars, which are the thing you get if an explorer married a V guitar:
http://www.donmack.com/Images/products/Dean/79Series/79_ML_body.jpg
and about double necks, usually one of them is a regular electric, and the other is a 12 string guitar, they have 12 machine heads, and are basicly like electrics, you can think of them like electrics with double strings, they are harder to play (cause you need to fret 2 strings in the act of fretting one), but once you master it, it would give you great tones.
a 12 string accoustic was used to record serenity by godsmack, but the most famous double neck guitarist was Jimi Page from Led Zeppelin, who used a SG double neck:
http://www.edromanguitars.com/featured/images/jimmypage1.jpg
PS: Dan that's one cool V guitar, but what do you think about this one:

So... on a 12 string, are the 2 strings that you fret at the same time the same tone? or is one higher or lower pitch?
and I wondered how they got that effect in 'Serenity', just thought it was edited ro something.
ah, I knew V-neck sounded a bit weird, hehe http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
UnDead_Knight1
02-11-2006, 01:23 PM
it's "almost" the same tone, you've got one string a bit sharper than the other, but they basicly have the same tone, but it would give a much nicer tone, although it's not always desireable, for instance it just wouldn't sound rigt if you played creeping death on a 12 string guitar (still it would sound good), o and a little fact about the song nothing else matters, James and Kirk through in a lot of guitars there, including 12 string guitar, meaning if you play the wholesong on one guitar, it would be impossible to get that tone they have on the record.
so, any sitar fans here? I know I am
I play the electric sitar:

-------------------------------------------------

---------5----------------------5----------------

yeah, p=pull off, h=hammer on, and b=bend, also /or\=slide up or down
I find it a lot easier to play fast riffs while standing, and about guitar straps, there's a yamaha strap that has airbags in it, so it's supposed to be a lot easier on the shoulder, I usually use leather straps, which are also good, but the cloth ones, will they get the job done, but if you have a choice go with leather or airbags

yeah, it would sound best on a sitar.
and about the bass, I don't think Jean's bass who would make a good weapon, but Lars Ratz's (metalium bassist) version would make a much better version, as Jean's "blade" is made of wood, but Lars's version of the axe bass would be a better weapon, s the blade is actually made of metal, that's one crazy dude lol

@James, yeah hit the lights is from kill'em all, pretty damn good album imo
and, I don't quite understand your bass question, did you mean playing techniques, or tones? if you meant techniques, will bassists usually use different playing styles than guitarists, although some of them like Hendrix's bassist play it like they play guitar, if you mean tones, will it's low backing tones (hence the name bass), and yeah they make some cool solos

yeah, I was talking about the bassists technique, I know they usually use different styles just wondered if it was possible to play it that way.
And bass solos are so cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I've been playin guitar for about two and a half years as well, i play through a gibby les paul tuned to D and an 80's Explorer tuned to Drop C, I'm a huge heavy metal freak. For now I play through a Jeckyll and Hyde pedal through whatever amp i can find, but im building my own guitar amp and it's gonna be a distortion monster

Wow, you're making your own amp? cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
how exactly do you go about doing that? buy the parts and put them together, or is it a bit more complex?

I used to play the clarinet and the recorder. I haven't played either in years, but I could probably pick up a recorder and play a few songs from memory since I can't read music anymore through lack of practice.
Currently I only play zils, but I love messing around with African drums when I can get my hands on them.

I used to play the recorder, it's great to play and you can get some good little tunes out of it.
Oh the african drums! what are they like to play?

I love them, but can't afford to buy my own or go to the local teacher/performance group. I have too many hobbies to pick up another interest atm.
I prefer the tone of the drums to the egyptian ones I have played (only one or two) since they all seem tinny in comparison. I once went to a workshop that was held in a big room with about 60 of us drumming improv style - which was more fun than I ever had performing in school bands etc.

Alytian, if you want extreme distortion, I'd aim at line 6's insane distortion, it's a complete meltdown, even more distortion than the mesa boogie triple recto.
about drumz, try combining drumz with african drumz to form one ultimate set, and have another drummer back you up with drumz (not african), you woun't fin anything more powerful (try it live if you can, I did, and the audiance loved it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), I got that idea from Sully Erna and Shannon Larken (they played it live, as a tribute to John Bonham

During my last year of musical education we got to learn to play on them a bit.
The Djembe kind.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
We got to learn quite a few different rythms to make entire musical pieces with and such. And I still remember most of them by heart actually, once you learn them they seem to stick with you. It was really interesting and good fun, oh and one of our teachers played so much on them that in the end his fingers started pretty much bleeding so he had to have bandaids on them...http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

abigail is really cool song, but it's a bit wierd, cause the start of the song is actually faster than the solo, wierd
and I don't think anyone can sing King's songs the same way King sings them, will atleast not the way he uses his voice with King Diamond, in Mercyful Fate he usually stayed with one pitch, but in King Diamond each word is in a different pitch, pretty cool, oh and Andy (King's lead guitarist) simply rocks.
King is propably the most talented (and satanic) vocalist alive
PS: if anyone knows a good program that I can use to take screenshots of movies please tell me, so I can post a picture of Sully Erna's drum kit (that includes drums and african drums), it's from the movie Changes. I think I did will, I woun't know for sure tell next week, and no it's no roginal pysics, it's advanced technological physics, pretty cool stuff once you get the hang of it, especially cause it's combined with electronics and programming, we get to build robots (not those highly intelegent ones you see on tv, but still it's pretty cool)
anyway, yeah drums are a bit expensive, but now that I think about it, I put more money on my guitar rig than on my drum kit (which equals about 2500$), as tube amps are pretty expensive too (but sound a lot better than solid state ones)
so, anyone tried playing slayer songs all downpicks? now that's a challenge (a pretty painful one for your picking hand)

I'd really like to take up the drums, but I just havent got enough money or the space for it. and besides all the guitar stuff costs as much already..
The Sax looks like a lot of fun to play, but could take a lot of time to get upto a good playing standard (like learning most instruments). Wo8ld be cool to play some jazz on the Sax http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

well, for drums you play once for the drum kit, and that's it, all others sound basically the same, the problem is the space, with guitar, there's different kinds and types, that sound different, and so is the amps and effects, so expect to spend lots of money for guitar stuff if you're serious about your tone versatility, besides, I think guitar is my fav. instrument, as it can stand alone, play leads or backup stuff, and not to mention the huge tone variaty (if you have the money ofcourse), I don't think there's any other instrument that does this, still it's a matter of preference, I chose guitar, and glad I did.
aout sax, yeah it would be cool to play jazz stuff on it, as jazz guitars aren't used much, I'd like to have one and know how to play it, just for fun, and yeah I think it would need some time before I can acctually play a song.
PS: drummers don't take time to be good, anyone can play the drumz, what makes a drummer special is the technqiue he uses.
PS2: (and I don't mean sony's machine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), can anyone play slayer's stuff? and Kerry's solos? they're pretty cool, but are very fast

I agree with all of that last bit, and I'm willing to spend money on guitar becasue it's something that I wana do in the future and I can see myself doing that cause Ive been improving without even knowing it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif hehe http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
UK did you the same when you were learning, just wondering http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
About the drums, maybe I can arrange my room to have enough space, and money wont be a big problem soon, so I could learn the basics and develop my very own style http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. We'll have to see though..
go for the Sax man http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif get some jazz going http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
finally about Slayer. I haven't heard much of them, but like most other stuff I'll get into it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
Have you got any recommended songs to play?
UnDead_Knight1
02-16-2006, 12:18 PM
will, I have Jazz going on my Jazz guitar, still it's not as good as a sax in jazz, cause guitar usually is for backup, so I haven't really played it exept for charity stuff with jazz band.
and yeah, I did improve without knowing, to tell you the truth, I still don't know how I learned to play master of puppets (one of the early songs I learned), it's like suddenly I was able to play it lol
about slayer, they rock, but I don't think you might want to play their stuff just yet, as they are extremely fast, but I really like the riff of bloodlines, and black magic, so you might want to play those, but if I was to give you exercises, according to the stuff you told me, I think you should try the smoke on the water solo, as it's a pretty easy one, tell me if you need any tabs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The same thing happened to me with For Whom The Bell Tolls, although it's quite an easy song.
Oh, I have the Smoke on the Water tab already, I'll try it sometime today. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
With the drums, is there some kind of starter kit or something, or is it worthwhile just jumping in and buying a kit.

Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif any other tabs for different ypes of practise, so a good speed picking one I think Master of Puppets is suitable, what about a good powerchord practise, I need to build my ability in them.
and I dont know if Im practising the right way, is just doing practise tabs and playing some songs I like enough? cause it seems to be doing the job well enough. On averge I get about 1.5-2hours of practise a day, but i need to do more and focus more when Im playing.

yeah, master of puppets is a good speed picking exercise, so is anything from kill'em all, and st.anger, for power chords go to AC\DC's stuff, like back in black and highway to hell (sometimes you need to play all the 6 strings).
and yeah, practicing songs you like is the best way to learn, that's how I learned anyway, never really used practice tabs (as I never was able to find any at that time).
2 hours is pretty good in a day, I used to do 2-2.5 hours, now I do about 7-8 if I have the time (and they ask why I don't do my homework, but I still am good at school in my majors (physics/electronics/programming, as I need electronics and physics knowlege for my guitar stuff (if they broke, or need tweaking), and programming in hacking (nothing illigal, not that I can't do it)
oh, and try this in dropped C (CGCFAD):

and let's see if you can recognize thishttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif, I'll give one hint, the band that played this isn't metallica, but they played as metallica's warmup band in metalllica's madly in anger with the world tour http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif that's a pretty big hint http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

first of all congratulations on the ring, and early congratulations on the guitar, tuner, and headphones, have much fun, and most important of all is that you make lots of voise http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
and the nomad vagabond part would suite as the prince is kinda a vagabond (man I love that wordhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif), the rest would need some tweeking, but not very much, as it's pretty much in the same direction
and the concert ruined the album reload, will not really, but they got lazy and released it with lots of songs that are there just to fill space, still it's got some cool songs like fuel, and the memory remains, but the unforgiven II simply sucks compared to the original one
LZ are a great band, they are concedered the best band overall, but for me I still prefer metallica, LZ is secod place with me, but very little far behind than tallica, still can't change my loving of tallica, propably heard them even before I heard my father lol (when I got back from hospital my father was playing the album master of puppets, at the song master of puppets, that's propably why I love that album so much), and yeah, Jimmy Page is very talented guitarist, one of the best guitarists ever, stairway to heaven is pretty cool song, and easy to play, but it does get more difficult at the end (nothing serious).
oh, and have you ever tried playing disposable heroes (http://www.mysongbook.com/tab-tab_download-id_tablature=12260.htm)?, it's a pretty cool song, and it's very simple (but fast), oh, and in the tab it's a bit slower than the original one in the beginnig, but the rest is cool, Lars really shines in this song (and in the four horsemen)

LZ are a great band, they are concedered the best band overall, but for me I still prefer metallica, LZ is secod place with me, but very little far behind than tallica, still can't change my loving of tallica, propably heard them even before I heard my father lol (when I got back from hospital my father was playing the album master of puppets, at the song master of puppets, that's propably why I love that album so much), and yeah, Jimmy Page is very talented guitarist, one of the best guitarists ever, stairway to heaven is pretty cool song, and easy to play, but it does get more difficult at the end (nothing serious).
oh, and have you ever tried playing disposable heroes (http://www.mysongbook.com/tab-tab_download_redirect-id_tablature=12260&p****=jajoizobukuhenmu.htm)?, it's a pretty cool song, and it's very simple (but fast), oh, and in the tab it's a bit slower than the original one in the beginnig, but the rest is cool, Lars really shines in this song (and in the four horsemen)
Dont worry, Il make a lot of noise http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
ah, I hate the Unforgiven II it completely spoiled a near perfect song.http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
I still prefer Metallica, and they will always be my favourite band, but I haven't really got into LZ that much until recently.
Cool! I wish I had Metallica played at my birth, or when I was very young, what a great influence http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif and that is one of the greatest songs ever, so it's been in your head for your whole life, that is cool!
Il tyr the disposable heroes tab now http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif it's great when drummers get to show off their stuff, some people are shocked by how good drummers are, I find that weird how they can think that.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

yeah, the unforgiven II is an unforgiven mistake.
oh, and it wasn't in my head my whole life, I had 10 days before I got totally messed up lol http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, propably that's how I got to know how to play that song, cause I listened to it so much that I got it stuck in my head (I once wrote parts of it on an english essay, my teacher thought those are my words, so she gave me an A+, and they say metal is bad for you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif)
and, will personally I hate people who think that vocals are the only thing in the song http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif, what about guitar, drums or bass? are they there for decoration? I mean, being a guitarist is no easy job, it's very painful at first (to the fretting fingers), and I want to see a vocal that would match a screaming guitar solo (excluding King Diamond, who is pretty much a bunch like a bunch of guys, maybe he sucked the singing ability out of people who he sucked the blood of, it's good I'm also undead) and I also met people who thinks drummers can't be good, wassup with that? drummers simply rock, as they give the song the punch it needs, but the people I really hate are those that try to make themselves look like they know about music, but they don't even know how to tell a guitar from a bass.

yeah, I mean a song wouldnt be waht it is without all the key pieces like bass gutiar drums vocals and other instruments,it wouldnt be the same if all the components weren't there.
I agree about guitarist bei g a difficult job, I havent been playing for long but my fingers sure did hurt a little bit when I first started http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
and sometimes when you cut your hands on the wire, that stings a bit too.
people who think drummers can't be good need a reality check, they need to realise that everybody in a band has amazing skills and are great!
yeah I know what you mean, also people whodon;'t understand what playing a n instrument is like and critisicise it. For instance you tell somebody that you can play a certain song on guitar, and they say it's not a big deal ot anything, well it is because for starters yu've spent time learning an instrument, which does take a lot of time, and then you;ve leanrt the song itself.

critics flamed me so much after my first gig, saying I suck, mind you the songs where pretty tough to play for someone playing only for a year (no remorse, seek and destroy, the four horsemen, black magic...), will now I propably can shove it in their faces that my band got a record deal, but propably woun't as I don't want to waste my time on such lowlives.
@gopher: cool another guitarist, and a wind istruments player, cool, can you give me advice on improving my breath? as I plan on getting a sax.
PS: anyone know why violen/viola/cello players from here (San Jose) hate guitarists/bassists/drummers? I never really understood that, as we never hated them, or picked on them, we try to leave them alone, but they come to tell us that their instruments are superior, wierd bunch.
as for me, for classical tones, I either go to clean electric with lots of chourus and reverb, an accoustic, or a sitar, depends on the situation

I havent really heard many other winf instruments that much, but aswell as the sax I like the flute, or whatever the instrument that was used in Led Zepelin's "Stairway to heaven" thats a cool sound it makes.
drumming duet?! sounds amazing!
did they do that in any of their songs?

will, acctually it's a harmonica, and yeah, it sounds cool, it's pretty easy to play, but I'm amazed you catched that tone, as it's almost unnoticeable, exelant ears dude.
about godsmack, no they didn't do it in any of their songs, will maybe in the awaking, and Sully played a 2 drums kit in get up, get out, but nothing as big as the duet they make live, and they said they acctually pplay different one each concert, pretty cool, the one they played in the DVD was one with LZ tones, as it was tribute to John Bonham (RIP) LZ's drummer.
oh, and if you want to know the real power of a drummer, listen to voodoo by godsmack, as this song is practically a drum solo

do you mean capo?
http://www.yourdictionary.com/images/ahd/jpg/A4capo.jpg
it's just to play the song in a different tone, it's pretty much like tuning your guitar on a different tuning, I don't think any *real* guitarist would use them, as the way I see it, it's just a gadget that they expect beginners to get
Sandwarrior1990

yeah capo, thats th one,
my sister got one for me (dont kno why she did that), and I tried it and it was a complete waste of time IMO.

I've found this deal for a guitar. It's a Marshall Stratocaster el guitar with an MG15RCD combo-amp 15 watts 8'' 2channels (Clean/Overdrive)
Equalizer with contour function
Rocket Deluxe (GAP15): Vibarm, 1 humbucker, 2single coils og 5-way ickup-chooser...whatever all that means.
I am sorry if any of this doesn't make sense but it was translated from a norwegian page and I think there are some typos in the text they wrote there.
This package also includes a cable and a gig bag along with some extra equipment and it costs about 360 euros. If anyone can make out the specs from this page, here it is along with the picture of the package. Again sorry if the translation was bad

@James: Marshall made the best amps, they still make exellant amps, but mesa boogie's triple recto has taken the throne with it's extreme distortion, line 6 are becoming more popular as they're having more warmth in amps, still line6's variax guitars suck big time, as they don't feel good in your hands, they don't look cool, they don't sound good, and they cost alot.

all you need is a good guitar, a good strap, monster cable or wireless system, good amp, and effects that suits you, and a good pick (nothing is better than dunlop picks), get a decent guitar, a monster cable or wireless system, a dunlop tortex or ultex pick, and a line 6 amp, and you're done, as they have build in effects that suits anyone, but they do require tweeking, as their factury stuff sucks
stagg guitars are pretty cheap, they do sound good, but the standard fender strat is way better, as it's a semi-pro guitar, acctually Hendrix used it as his main guitar, so nothing unpro in it.

Okay, I should have most of that stuff soon, although I need to get some more picks I've run out. And the nearest guitar shop is like 40minutes drive away http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
I just bought a stagg guitar, (well my mum did for my birthday, getting soon:mh)
it should be upto standard though, I think i had a Squire strat anyway, its a cheap 'package' guitar though, so the new one should be better.

yeah, it would sound better, especially when you plug it into a spider amp (when you get one)
btw, what do you mean you've run out of picks? what do you do with them? a standard pick should last atleast 6 month (although I'm talking about dunlop standard, don't know about other kinds as I never tried them properly), infact I still have my very first pick

Well, I left it lying around, and I only had 3 and they all got lost, hehe.
I'll look after the dunlop ones more carefully http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

try getting a dunlop tortex .88 (green ones), as they are the most kind that guitarists use, Hammett and Hetfield doesn't use any other kind, and don't underestimate the power of a pick, as with cheaper picks you'll never be able to play as good as you might play with green dunlop tortex:

My tuner still hasn't arrived, I'm officially annoyed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif, and I'm crappy at tuning by ear.
I think im getting the hang of master of Puppets now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, thats a improvement from For Whom The bell Tolls I think, s'all good http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

yep, and it's quite handy when I don't have my pick with me, and I usually get a dozen of them for 3$, so it's not that expensive.
hope you get your tuner soon mate
and yeah, master of puppets is pretty easy, exwpt some part of it where you use your 4 fingers one at a turn, and Kirk's solo (James's solo is very easy (yes James plays a solo in this song, it's the one in the middle of the song where it all goes soft and clean)

Not much ,hehe http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
A few basic things though:
-like, what size kit to get for starters
-you know those noise reducing pads you can get for the skins of the drums? well, if you do know, then how much do they reduce noise, cause my dad doesnt like loud stuff (fool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif)
-How the hell do I read drums from tabs
(I feel like I can add my own touch to the drums)
Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
UnDead_Knight1

will, for starters just go to the music store and ask for a regular drum kit, not a modified one
noise reducing pads reduce the noise drastically, you would hear the drums, but if someone is on the other room, he woun't hear you, if you watched the movie school of rock, you would have a good idea on drum pads
and for reading drum tabs, will, in guitar pro (which imo should be called rocker pro, or metalhead pro) you can get a mapping which tells you what drum or cymbal each number presents, memorize it, and practice, I don't know how to get it, but I think it will pop up when you first try to see a drum tab using that program, just print it or copy it or whatever, if I can catch it again, I'll post it here

Always good to take up another instrument (Although I am more familiar in low Brass http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif), but be sure to always breathe from the diaphram (As in, expand your stomach). This allows more air in, allows better control of airflow, and resists shoulder tension commonly caused by breathing more into the lungs (Everyone has a tendancy to tighten up when breating with the lungs - NEVER DO THIS!!)
ALWAYS breathe with your mouth. Breathing through the nose causes more air to enter the lungs instead of the diaphram, and it is also a cause of shoulder tightening.
To ensure proper breathing and air output, always make sure you're sitting (Or standing) with the best possible posture. There is a considerable difference in sound with poor posture and vice versa
When blowing into your horn, allow your throat to relax, do not clench your teeth, and (at least for brass players), have the rear sides of your tongue to be placed against your molars. This channels the air for optimum airflow.
Other than those tips, you should be fine http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

well, I'm also a vocalist, and many of Gopher's advice on breathing apply here also.
to be good you need to practice (and as your fav. vocalists are Hetfield and Diamond you need to practice alot, unless you're pretty goodhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), I don't think there's any other advice that would apply here, exept maybe don't screw your voice, as I once tried to sing King's stuff, and as he uses falsetto a lot, I had my voice raised several piches up for about a week, and was annoying as hell, man I'm glad now I just sing backup vocalshttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

well, you wouldnt want to go to a boring show, although im not sure how slipknot could get boring...
maybe they take the whole stage act thing a bit too far
UnDead_Knight1
02-24-2006, 01:01 PM
that's my point they have pretty damn cool stage act, but the music sounds better on the album, and I don't know what do you mean by boring, cause as long as there's pyro I'm happy, and metallica's shows have lots of pyro, it's a good thing they're crazy enough to continue this even after James got burned
Sandwarrior1990

during the song fade to black I think back in 1992, the tech guy told him that the pyro order got changed, there's pyro in other places, and James assumed that there woun't be pyro on the old places, apparantly there was, still he continued the tour, but as his whole right side got burned another guitarist took the rythmic guitar duties

will do http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif hopefully I shouldtn find it too difficult, but practise makes perfect http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
UnDead_Knight1
02-25-2006, 03:39 PM
well, it's not a hard song, and it's not even fast one, but it does help with chords, and wierd fretting (you need to fret the G string on the 2nd fret with your first finger, and the 5th fret on the A string with your third finger (fourth finger if you have extra tall fingers))
I'd advice you to just move your first finger from the 2nd fret up to the 5th, without using other fingers, as this way is easier, and it would allow your fingers to have more fidelty, cause they get too crampped, besides that's how Page plays it (Page rocks)
Sandwarrior1990
02-26-2006, 04:20 AM
I'll try that soon http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
Might not be able to do it very soon though, due to 8 a3 pages needing to be handed in soon http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif
yesterday I practised guitar in the dark, to get better at finding the correct fret without looking.
UnDead_Knight1
02-26-2006, 04:40 AM
that's also a good way at finding the correct fret, but it doesn't really matter, as with time, and with you getting better, you'd naturally find the frets without looking, but I guess the hardest thing to master is playing guitar while head-banging
Sandwarrior1990
02-26-2006, 04:43 AM
yeah, but playing the guitar right is way morem important, theres no point in playing when it sounds bad, and you look a fool if you're headbanging AND playing bad.
But playing it well and headbanging is okay i suppose http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
UnDead_Knight1
02-26-2006, 05:21 AM
if you play bad, you'd look like a fool no matter what, but if you play well, you'll look good no matter what, but I find that headbanging while playing shows talent, as the player can still sound good, after the headache he has from headbanging, still you need to know how to head bang, you need to head bang with the rythem, not just headbang like a fool
Sandwarrior1990
02-26-2006, 06:11 AM
Yeah it does show that they are great at playing, but for some reason I just don't like it when guitarists headbang, Im not sure why. Just doesnt seem like the best way to move along to a heavy metal song. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
UnDead_Knight1
02-26-2006, 07:37 AM

Sandwarrior1990
02-26-2006, 08:16 AM

UnDead_Knight1
02-26-2006, 10:26 AM
hell yeah, well not just in the San Diego show, all the shows are cool, but man he has some pretty fast solos, imo to have the best impact is to play extremly fast during the solo, as it would have max. impact, if you play all the song pretty fast, the solo would loose all it's meaning
Sandwarrior1990
02-26-2006, 11:16 AM
yeah, pretty much saying the solo has to stand out to make it succesful.
Is it just me or are most of the live songs a bit faster than on the albums?
UnDead_Knight1
02-27-2006, 05:43 AM
yeah, as that's why they call it solo, it has to stand out, not just playing some notes on the high strings (G,B,e), on the higher frets.
yeah, some of the live songs are indeed faster than the album versions, dunno why, I also find myself playing faster live, there's propably something on the stage, some kind of accelerator on the stage, that makes players play faster, will anyway in the metallica case they sound better live, so I'm quite happy with ithttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Sandwarrior1990
02-27-2006, 08:31 AM
Maybe it's something to do with that fact that many people are watching you play. And theres more pressure to play better live?
UnDead_Knight1
02-27-2006, 11:30 AM
well, it may be the case, for me I don't feel pressure, as the more pressure you have the more you crank up, and the worse you play, so it might be the anrenaline playing

depends on the player, my favorite players usually make it sound a hell lot better live (you have live sh**, don't you think it sounds better than the albums?), exept propably Mick Thompson from slipknot, as I find them a lot better on the album, Jimi on some of his songs actually played different solo each show, but it was on the same lines, simply put adrenaline rocks if you know how to use ithttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Funny how this thread came right on time for me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I took 6 months of piano lessons a very long time ago, and just recently as 5 weeks ago I decided to start again, so off to the store I went to purchase a new piano bench and ended up buying a new piano I liked more. hehehe. never go shopping with me.
I'm having more fun now than before.
I can read music but I can't read it quickly yet, I guess it takes practice practice practice which I do everyday deligently.
In addition i bought a violin two weeks ago and I'm very interested in learning that as well but not sure if it's a good idea since I'm learning the piano as well, but I am itching to get my hands on that too.
My piano practice doesn't take long at all with all the stuff my teacher is giving me. She has me doing alfreds all in one adult, she gives me a church song to learn every week, also one song for first year classics and two songs out of schaums.
So my practice starts out day after my lesson and it lasts about an hour and a half, then after that I find that half hour to 45 min is enough. I know all my stuff pretty well so it's just perfecting it on a daily basis.
What do you guys think? Take violin also?
Sandwarrior1990
02-28-2006, 07:59 AM
@UK: Yeah, definately Metallica play better live, especially Orion and Creeping death (and for whom the bell tools IMO)
I havent heard Mick play live, if its not as good as recorded then I'm in no rush too.
@oxfords1: I used to play tha piano for about 2 years, but I got bored sop moved to guitar (much better instrument IMO)
UnDead_Knight1

@james: creeping death is propably the best metallica song live, about slipknot, well it's worth going to their show live just for the stage act, but if you want to buy any of their live albums don't bother, as the studio albums are much better.
@oxford1: if you can handle it then I say go for it, the more instruments the better, and yeah James is right, if you can I sujest an electric guitar, as it's more versatile, but it depends on your music style, I currently play the drums, the electric and accoustic guitar, the electric sitar, the banjo, and I'm gonna start the sax. soon, just waiting for it to arrive

yeah, guitar pro is really an exelant program for tabs, best thing to happen to guitarists since the tube amps, or the magnetic pickup, well maybe I'm too drastic, but it is pretty cool invention http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

pretty damn cool solo, although it's not his best workhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif what song was it from?
@James: well, with time you will make songs faster, but it all depends of you not selling your sould to money, a lot of bands used to rock, but now they sound like sh**, hope this doesn't happen to metallica, they sounded good on St. Anger, but it's not up to the metallica standard, but from what I've heard from the making of the next album, it's gonna rock big time, I hope it's like master of puppets or ...and justice for all
Sandwarrior1990
03-01-2006, 07:55 AM
yeah! so it could go down in history as one of their best albums ever, and it would be a great way too go out, is it likely that this will be their last album do you think?
Dont worry. theres no point in making music for money, first of all you'll make bad songs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
the song needs top come from your heart, or have a lot of meaning, or just simply rock http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
BTW: In guitarpro4, how do I add another instrument in?
UnDead_Knight1
03-01-2006, 10:45 AM
I'm sure this album would rock, but I dunno if it will surpass or even match the puppet and the justice albums, only time would tell you that, and I doupt it would be their last album, bands usually keep playing tell they can't play no more, or if they loose a member , or just breakup, they look better than ever, and loosing a member never been a problem to them, and it doesn't look like they're gona breakup any time soon, so I'd rest assure if I were youhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
yeah the songs do need to come from the heart, and I guess there's no point in selling the soul to money if you can't have money.
about guitar pro, to get another instrument, go to track, then go to add, and choose instrument, then choose your instrument, but if you're adding drums choose precussion not instrument in the add menu, btw here's the guitar pro drum tab mapping:

Im just thinking that you have to keep the song fauirly simple, to get good effects, cause putting lots of stuff in will just get a big noise which doesnt ound too great :S.
UnDead_Knight1
03-01-2006, 12:06 PM
yeah, simple usually rocks, but not too simple, just the right amount, and it's the same with effects, usually all you need is the amp distortion, a bit of delay, a wah pedal, a volume pedal, and some studio effects (and a distortion pedal if you play lead guitar and lots of solos)

I find tapping pretty easy, but I find palm muting harder, its strange cause i dont know why
UnDead_Knight1
03-03-2006, 08:57 AM
palm muting is pretty easy once you got the hang of it, and it can give you a great new tones, depends on how much you press your palm on the strings, while tapping Kirk Hammett style require you to tab the strings with the pick tip, and that's pretty hard to do in a solo cause the pick and the strings are both thin
Sandwarrior1990
03-03-2006, 09:03 AM
Is there any place I can leanr to palm mute properly, Im stil not sure what I have to do
UnDead_Knight1
03-03-2006, 11:53 AM
I don't think there's a place that shows you how to palm mute, if I find some videos I'll send them to you, but the main idea is to rest the palm of your picking hand on the strings, the more you press on the strings the more muted they become, all you need to practice is picking fast while muting
Sandwarrior1990

as I said, it needs some getting used to, but once you master it while playing fast, you can play most of metallica's stuff, they use palm muting a lot
Sandwarrior1990
03-03-2006, 12:57 PM
yeah, I should be able to grasp ot pretty well.
Btw, is there a way to onnect my guitar straight to my sound card or something, I want to record onto my pc but don't want to buy recording software yet.
UnDead_Knight1
03-03-2006, 01:11 PM
only if you have a sound card with build in preamp, otherwise you woun't hear anything, the only amature card to do this so for is the X-Fi elite pro, I've heard that the Audigy 2 ZS platinum pro does this also, but I didn't test that one, anyway it comes with recording software, or you can simply mic you amp, this is how things were done in the 80s and 90s, and are still done with tube freaks like metallica
Sandwarrior1990
03-03-2006, 01:24 PM
So I think buying the X-fi is the best option, how do I mic my amp, and how would that work?
UnDead_Knight1
03-03-2006, 01:31 PM
well to mic the amp, all you need to do is put the mic infront of the speaker of the amp, and then record regulary like recording yourself, of course the better the mic is the better results you'd get
Sandwarrior1990
03-03-2006, 01:46 PM
ah, sounds quite simple, I'll go for that option first http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Maybe move on to the X-fi card when I have then spare money http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
but it should definately be worth it.
UnDead_Knight1
03-03-2006, 01:57 PM
it's worth it, but I'd advise getting a decent amp first, the spider is a great amp, and a decent guitar, I think you already ordered the guitar, right?

@UK: I just realised that I got a palm mute muddled up with a dead note, and that I can do palm mutes I just didnt know what they looked like un GuitarPro4 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
So, whats a dead ntoe then..?
UnDead_Knight1
03-05-2006, 01:47 PM
cool sig SW, it reminds me of Unreal Tournament, anyway cool, you can palm mute, can you do it on different levels of muting, or just muting the strings? I'd say you can get great tones by partialy muting the stings, you get a crunchy sound, anyway, dead note is when you play an chord, that requires you to play notes on several strings, but mute the string in between them, like the following example:
e--
A--
D-14
G-x
B-12
E--
you need to play the B and D strings, but you need to not play the G string (x=dead note), so you need to either make your pick jump over the string, which is almost impossible when playing fast, or you can simply mute the string by lightly pressing the string so no sound would come from it
@SS: what type of modern music do you usually sing? pop, rock, rap or something completely different?
Sandwarrior1990

lol, I've already heard Speak in the studio http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif, but thx anyway http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif, and if you think that's promising wait till you hear the rest of the album, there are tracks that are way better, or atleast the tracks that they are talking about adding to the album, too bad they woun't add the song the house jack build (metallica cover ofcourse), but they wanted it to be all original album, and maybe release a cover album later (like metallica's garage inc.)
and don't worry, if I get my hands on a before release album, I'd send one to you, that would be 237497$, cash only please, lol just kidding, I'd gladly send you one, but I hope Sully feels better by then, he's really depressed by Jamie's death http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif, the poor guy started talking about seeing angels everywhere http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif, nothing cheers him up, hope he pulls himself together in time for their next tour

yep, Sully's guitar tech was sick, so he asked his lawyer (my friend's father) about a good tech, and he recommended me, so there I was, man you should have watched Tony play the talk box solo, he never used talk box before, it's usually Sully who uses it, but in the end it sounded pretty cool, but hey, it's their desicion, oh and they are really stubborn on using les paul guitars, when V's look much cooler, I only own a les paul as a tribute to Jimmy Page (yep, he was that good that he made me buy a guitar with a design I don't like much)
and true, it's godsmack so we propably woun't be disappointed, but remember that metallica is the best band alive, still they disappointed us with St.Anger
yeah, the garage inc. is a double album (2 discs) full only of cover songs, some of them are good, some of them stinks, and some are better than the original.
np, that's what friends do, sneak albums of famous bands before the release date to others lol
and about the death of Jamie, I think this (http://www.godsmack.com/news/news.asp?item=14255) explains it better, it's written by Sully himself

Piano wise, I used to hold some recitals and concerts several years ago. They were never for profit though. As for singing, I've done musicals in my schools which of course had some profit. Well, I also recorded a song which might earn some profit once it is on the radio but it's not my song, I sing in the background. Once I get some free time soon I plan on trying to form a band not sure if that's possible though. Would probably enjoy forming a band along the lines of Kamelot, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Epica, etc.

yeah, it was pretty cool, and yeah, talk box rocks, but one problem, you need to put the tube in your mouth, so exessive use will hurt you, that's why lots of guitatists prefer not to use it, but you gotta admit, the talk box solo in the house jack build is the best talk box experience, but yeah, it's pretty cool in I stand alone too.
yeah, metallica where going through bad times, with Jason leaving, and James going into rehab, very bad year for metallica, but somehow St. Anger managed to be the most sold album in 30 countries in 2003, but I don't think it will be the same with godsmack, as they already recorded a good deal before Jamie died, so it's propably the last few songs recorded are the not so good ones, but again they might be the best, as for some, sadness make them play better, for some it's anger, and for some it's something completely defferent.
and yeah, he did put a lot of thought into that letter, it shows that he really is pretty sad
@SS: cool, those bands are pretty cool, well atleast the ones I know from them, so, you gonna form a band as you the lead singer, and keyboard player? or just a singer? and one more thing, once you start getting money for your music, I think you'd propably like playing more, still there's nothing like playing just for the music, and not the profit

I think it sold more because it was the first album they had brought out in quite a while, but theres probably loads of other reasons.

well, I also prefer the distorted tone of electric guitar, but those cool tones hat bands like metallica use, not those high pitched ones that make your head hurt in so many levels. Talkbox does sound cool if used rarely, but if used alot it will get boring.
well, I think it sold a lot cause there are a lot of sh** bands out there, and you can't find a quality album so easily, plus there are a lot of people that don't apprciate good old music, and would buy anything, and there are some, like me, who bought this album simply cause it's a metallica album

I don't strive for profits. As I said, it wasn't my song that I recorded. I sing because I love to sing. And no, I'd prefer to just be the lead singer. I don't like keyboards. Perhaps if there was ever a piano solo, then yes. But that most likely wouldn't happen.

well, I don't think anyone plays music just for profits, as you wouldn't make good music if you don't have it in your heart, if you know what I mean, but there's nothing wrong in making a career out of something you enjoy doing so much, especially when this career has lots of moneyhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif
