so, i have been thinking about learning to play either a flute, or a guitar, but im not sure which. can anyone give me the average cost of them and, in your guys' opinion, which is easier to learn?

Depends what music you wanna play, I can tell you though that a decent guitar does cost quite a bit, especially if it's electric guitar, but it's very rewarding and versatile instrument http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

@Khaled
ANyway, to continue the talk from the pictures thread, yeah the setup is pretty good, and I'm especially impressed with the tremolo system. It can take a lot of abuse and it has pretty interesting functions like the intonation tool and the tension adjustment, and it still performs like any floyd rose like trem, except it doesnt have the issues that come with a floating bridge. The lack of other inlays is taking some time to adjust but I'm getting there. The neck joint is also superb. It's bolt on, but its slightly curved so the higher register is more accessible, and the best of al, the guitar is light and thin, which is quite a relief. One last thing I'd wanna do is maybe put the JB in the bridge and most definitely put strap locks. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

What issues come with a floating trem? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif they can all be worked around http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif There are FRs with a tremolo for each string, meaning if one string snaps, the rest are still in tune, now that's awesome http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif they still don't make them for lefty guitars though, or else I would've installed one on mine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
And yeah, strap locks are a must, lol
Razor_Ace
05-28-2009, 12:40 PM
Yeah I know that. Schaller makes the best original Floyds but they are expensive as hell.
I couldn't find a guitar with an original floyd in this price range, but I heard a lot of good stuff regarding the ZR trem, and it's true. It's way beyond the Jackson trem I used to have, and it stays in tune no matter how much you abuse the guitar.
Yep, just got strap locks today. It's one of the best investments you can make in a guitar, and they are worth every penny. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
UnDead_Knight1
05-28-2009, 01:06 PM
You can always just install an original FR on your current guitar, but no need to if the one you're having stays in tune despite the abuse http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Strap locks are indeed the best investment for guitar, it'll save your guitar from falling http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I dunno if I'd go for it, but what I WOULD like to install next would be Seymour Duncans, then it'll be perfect. Infinity pickups are okay, but somehow they seem to not have enough gain.
This'll probably be the last tremolo based guitar I'll buy. A few years from now, I'll get me a Jackson RR1T, the best V guitar ever made.

Hehe thanks xD
Yeah i know, but i couldn't resist the guitar...
Also, atm, i only really play at home, and with m friends (got some guitarist friends and drummers too). We haven't really formed a band or anything, but intend to. I figured i should get a good amp once im really sure about whats needed etc for a band, for gigs and stuff. But for the moment, a home/jammin amp's all i really need xD.
But the fender squire strat really didn't do it for me, 21 frets, one way tremolo, pretty dodgy pickups. The KE3 kelly i got now has a floyd rose (though its an official licensed, not an original), 24 frets, and Seymour Duncans, and i love it xD.

Yeah i know, i rkn i'll wait a lil bit before i get a gud amp.
Also first i wanna get a gud distortion pedal, and maybe a wah pedal too XD. SOme solos just don't sound the same without it!

Well I'm pretty happy with this one, but I also wanna try a guitar that has no tremolo, for diversity sake, and I love the RR1T as it is the top of the line Jackson guitar, and it's also the one Kirk used in the good ol days. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
By the way, have you heard of the signature Wah they made for Kirk?
And welcome back Karz. Yeah that sounds like a pretty sweet Axe, and yeah you definitely need a good amp. You could take a look at some digital amps or a processor like the Line 6 POD. I got one, and I like it quite a bit, and the versatility is great too. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A guitar with a tremolo can give you the experience of one without one, but one without one can't give you the experience of one with one http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif but it is indeed pretty awesome http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But yeah the Quad Pre is pretty closely based on the preamp from the head Petrucci used back in the day, which was a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+. That's probably one of the hardest to find and best sounding amps ever made, but I think the new Mark V should come pretty close to it as one of it's channels is based on the IIC+.

I don't think Avenged Sevelfold are emo. I havent heard ALL of their albums, but a few songs I DID listen to don't seem to indicate that. Plus, they do have some few harmonized guitar solos which I've liked since Iron Maiden, so solo harmonies are pretty cool in my book.
Besides, people shouldn't get too hung up on which "genre" or "class" their music belongs to and decide to jump into a deffensive, should someone condemn it. Just listen to what pleases you, regardless of the genre labeling. And in most cases, those who judge others are the ones who are most often afraid of falling under that same category they are trying to condemn, hence they resolve to judgmental statements.

Their early stuff were metalcore, with some emo influence, their later stuff are just plain metal though.
And I agree about the genre thing, I only look for the genre cause it helps with finding other bands which I might likely like http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I don't like however when people class their band as something way off their genre, like people calling Linkin Park a metal band http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif
Particularly their drummer's haircut that gives off this emo vibe
Last I checked, the haircut has nothing to do with the sound being produced http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Micheal Jackson is the most overrated musician in all times, he's a great dancer, but that's all, I know it's all a matter of taste, so can't really argue there, but his voice is pretty standard, nothing special. I agree he is overrated but think it's because lots of people from around the world love his music and I do mean lots. The man just died so it's not in my nature to speak bad of someone when they died I think it's disrespectful.
Those are awesome remixes trist if WW had some then it wold make me unplug my ears. Dear dear, you don't realize that remixes are capable off. Of course I know that WW has a really...individual style, but still, remaking it could make it more interesting. For example still having the same tones, chores or strings, but only directed on a different course. Maybe someone could remix WW back to the style of SoT or maybe mixing both. Or maybe something more epic. Not sure, but I hated the OST of DMC3. And look what happened.

Oh dear god, I can't even have a nice rant in the musicians' thread...look, I've got nothing against the man, I just said he's overrated, and I never said ALL his fans were like that, but most of them indeed are, in fact most non musicians fans of any artist are like that, not just his, and that's because very little to non (from the non musicians that is) can tell musical talent, most people wouldn't know the huge difference between the talent needed to play a Buckethead song to the "talent" needed to play a Mindless Self Indulgence song. And stop acting as if I was bashing him, saying he was overrated is not even close to bashing.

I think it's important to acknowledge musical talent, but the talent itself shouldn't be a sign of good music. There could be a song that was the most complicated piece of music in the world that required an extremely talented and experienced artist to play, but if it's got no feeling in it, it's just a bunch of notes.
That's what I feel every time I see somebody shredding on guitar. Most of the time I don't feel interested, but sometimes - mostly in Dream Theater songs - it clicks. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif It's almost all about the passion for me.

@Khaled: I wasn't acting like you were bashing him just because you said he was overrated. If I recall, I actually agreed with you when you said that. Was it because I said I think it's disrespectful to speak bad about someone when they're dead? I guess you thought I was talking about you when said that but honestly, I really wasn't. Me and my sister made fun of him all the time, but now that he's dead, we just think it's disrespectful because that's just how we are. I wasn't refereeing to you, I was just throwing that out there. I live in MJ home town and there alot big MJ fans over here and we never start a fight over something that silly. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif Your right, you didn't say all his fans are insecure, but you never said most or some either so I assumed you meant all of us. It was just a simple mistake I guess so I apologize for misunderstanding you. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
@Sandwarrior: Agrees, I feel the exact same way, sometimes I feel half the people playing guitar, are just doing it to look cool. I think some people can tell who's really passionate and serious about it though.

This is the truth, I know because I live in a community where the people I grew up with, called rock and metal "white music" and think that anyone who's not white shouldn't be listening to it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif My older brother owns two electric guitars and one acoustic guitar, so I guess I have him to thank for helping me appreciate guitar playing and learn to appreciate good music. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

There's good rap and hip hop out there, it's just lost in a sea of absolute rubbish that we all know as the mainstream media. It doesn't really enhance the image of a genre if you don't happen to like it yourself, either. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
Sometimes I hate my ridiculously wide spread taste in music. There are too many CDs in the world, damnit.
I'm getting back into my guitar practise. I hadn't played properly for a while, I think it was just from getting distracted with other things that happened. But I always find it weird that I don't seem to have lost any of the previous skill I built up, even after so long.

Well its a bit ironic that really crappy music is actually the one that SELLS most, so the good stuff mostly gets by unnoticed. And of course, there are also people who think that by following the majority and listen to what is popular, they won't stand out. xD

@Razor_Ace: I know I learned that in elementary school but even when I did tell them that they still wouldn't listen to rock. You gotta understand that these were the type of kids that thought anything outside of rap/hip hop or R&B just wasn't real music. When came to music they were just ignorant. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
@Sandwarrior: I've been mostly listening to hip hop and rap with positive messages behind them but I don't have alot those types of rap and hip hop songs. I still am open minded about music though I like almost every genre. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

yeah i got a wah pedal, the crybaby GCB 95, and since im a big metallica fan i gotta say its damnnn sweet! lol. i can get that Battery solo tone even with my crappy box amp!
Michael Jackson was a good musician, good dancer, and a humanitarian, but i definately agree he was overrated. Personally i don't care for his music, but it was original. He certainly wasnt a god.
Also, (im gonna burn for this one), i personally never found Slash all to guitar-god like. Sure some of his stuff is good, but i think there are a helluva lot better guitarists out there not getting the attention that guy got lol. John Petrucci, Alexi Laiho, the trivium duo, randy rhoads, synyster gates, chris broderick, marty friedman for example lol. And by opinion, Kirk Hammet too xD
yeah, A7X aren't emo, its just the fact that during their most popular phase they put on all the makeup for live shows and vids, so everyone goes "ewww emo", but their music is far from it.
Haha and yeah syn is a pretty good guitarist imo.

I disagree. They're not really bad.I liked city of evil. It's just that their latest album wasn't really the usual style you'd expect from them.If you consider it as metal, then it is kinda bad or cheesy, but if you listen to it with an open mind, you'll find some interesting tunes. It's just different from the usual stuff you'd listen to everyday.

And MJ was a good songwriter.Sure,he wrote the relatively simple stuff but the songs were groovy and had a unique feel and that's what makes them stick to your head.
Saying he was teh rgeatest musician ever would be definitely wrong, but he isn't bad either.
Anyway,we could say this argument is similar to when people say that Kurt Cobain is the greatest guitarist ever blabla.. Kurt's a good songwriter and Nirvana's cool, but being able to deliver good songs doesn't necessarily mean you're the greatest musician ever.

I always say that, and it usually is followed by appreciation from the girl, if the girl really expects me to play guitar just to impress her I could care less about her, she'll probably leave me anyway for someone "cooler"
For the record, playing for the love of the music makes you learn much faster than learning it just to impress girls. Matt heafy is a proof of that.

First off, your friend needs to know what style he is playing.
Second, Squires are not really good at making basses.
Third That's a guitar amp, so it won't cut it for bass. If you wanna stick with Line 6, you'd need something like this: http://bass-guitars.musiciansf...***-Combo?sku=500270 (http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-Lowdown-LD15-Laguna-Pack-Bass-Combo?sku=500270)

The amp Razor recommended is solid, as for basses, tell him to get either LTD or Jackson, those are the basses that give the most range in music style, squire ain't really decent...

Vai's shred gives me too much tension.I can't really keep listening to it throughout the day.He sure is a great guitarist, but I prefer John Petrucci and Paul Gilbert http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Robert... your voice has made me feel like there are a million happy children laughing and playing inside my head and it's a warm sunny day with flowers and happiness and there's nothing that could go wrong or perverse on this earth as long as you keep singing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

They are outstanding pieces of musical art, it even hurts my ears when listening to their angelical tracks.

Time for a bit of thread revival, don't ya think? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
ANywho, here's my dilemma. I'm getting a Marshall DSL 100 halfstack soon, but I need a good distortion pedal, so I'm trying to chose between Electro Harmonix Metal Muff and Way Huge Fat Sandwich. Both pedals seem really freakin awesome, but it's kinda hard to pick.
I'll take other suggestions into consideration as long as the pedals are ANALOG, so no Boss, Digitech and such. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Ironically, digital ones are better than solid state ones.

Huh? How's that?
Analog pedals work way better with tube amps, because digital distortion is waaaay to artificial.

Actually, from experience I found that tubes are the best, then digital then solidstate. If you want a solid state pedal, might as well get a solidstate amp with high distortion, and save money for other pedals.

Fair enough...then which stomp box would you recommend then. And just to keep in mind, I need something that is high quality.

Well, I like Boss MT2 Metal zone the most to be honest.
