Hi folks!

Here is the Friday update (not the last please be sure):

The cockpit of Me-262 is implemented (Michel Vibert - modeler, Loic Derrien - texturing.). Normal view:
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/262a.jpg

262's gunsight view:
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/262a_1.jpg

Some improvements if GUI. QMB with advanced setup:

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/GUI_1.jpg

And what this advanced setup is. It is done for all single modes as well as for coop. Now each single aircraft may have own user made skin. I mean including AI (note: ??? there means the positions that are new for other languages localization team). But please remember that this new feature eat FPS and RAM, if you like to use it. Upgrade your PC now for new dimension in a COOP!

Mirror in La-7:

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/mirror1.jpg

Mirror in Huricanes:

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/mirror2.jpg

Flight over the island Kronshtadt (great fortress, that Germans didn't able to grab)

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/island_1.jpg

Such small fortresses are present around this island on small islands:

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/island_2.jpg

Now please pay great attention. I open a bit our secrets. Here I try show how we use the blueprints of engines that to implement some part of damage model. Just the part. I will not explain all the details, just will point that only engine has up to 20 points to hit (that is standard program code for each engine with minimal differences.). Than please try to think what we are programming for other parts. Then think twice before to flame us /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif .

Great work again Oleg. The in-game Me-262 cockpit looks as great as in the previous shots - kudos to the modellers!

One question: the second shot shows some unusual clouds - are there changes to the cloud system as well...? Looks alomost like overcast.

Wow! The new features sound really great!

By the way, I hope you guys realize that the custom skins are not for each aircraft type or each flight - they are for each plane!!! I.E. if you have 12 La-5FN's fighting 12 109s, you can have 24 unique skins in your game.

I don't believe any other sim has done anything remotely like that.

Oleg: Your flight sim is absolutely cutting edge!!!! The detailed damage modelling seems certain to be lightyears ahead of any competition, existing or soon to be released.

A personal thanks for the Single player Skins option(s). As I have pointed out in several threads on this and other forums, it would appear that a HUGE majority of IL2 customers play Only in singleplayer mode. It's great to see that you are making major improvements for single play, as well as Online play.

The rearview mirrors are going to be Very interesting to employ. Of course, if one glances up and suddenly sees the opponent THIS close, it's "Kiss your A** Goodbye" time ! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Flat reflections do not require any special video hardware. I remember flat mirrors in car games before 3D accellerators were even a thought!!! From what I heard, Oleg has optimized the engine so you can get all these features with little slowdown from the original IL2. THAT takes hard work, and great skill. I am impressed more and more every Friday!

Great work, Oleg! Looking better and better each week, as you'd expect!

Boy, I've got to break out my copy of Juutilainen's Double Fighter Knight and the Rudel autobio to get back into the battles over Kronstadt, Leningrad and Finland!!! I just can't wait to see some nice Finnish campaigns!!!

Question:
Will the mirrors "vibrate"? I can't imagine them having that much utility in the middle of a fight...but I may be wrong.

Question:
Will the Finland maps extend to Murmansk in the far north and the action along the key rail line from Murmansk to Leningrad???

No. It is mistake of some authors. If it will vibrate, that measn it will be soon damaged.

Oleg, thats the best update you have given us!

First the 262, alltough its little more than a detail to me, it will certainly make a fun ride.

Then you bring us the infamous mirrors i've been expecting for a long time, since i need'em dearly in full real servers. be sure i'l make very good use of them, they show exactly the most important place to be seen in one's six.

After this, a glimpse of the city maps ingame.
It looks very, very, very good.

And ending the best update so far, an explanation on the engine damage model and implantation of the engines in the aircraft.

A few questions, i see in the last picture a hurricane, but i don't know that variant!
Is this the field mod variant?

Those four barrels look too fat and long for beeing ShVAK cannons, so i guess they are VYa cannons!
Am i right?

If i'm right, then i guess we have in our hands a potential massive destroyer!!!!!!!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I just love the VYa cannon, its my fav weapon in a IL-2.

Those in the middle are not cannons, they'r either .50 cals or .30 cals machine guns.

If they'r .50 cals unsinchronized, then a very, very happy man.

If they'r .30 cals, i can live with with, they'r only good to kill flyes, but that is also good, because flyes are annoying! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Anyway, we still need to know what the 4 fat ones are, i allready named them, the mighty 4FO! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The Hurri shouldn't have much problems with the weigth of the VYa, its the recoil i'm worried about, its a strong kick those 2x beastys give on a IL-2, but the ShVAK is worse in this aspect.

Ho, and let us not forget that we are getting the 12x .30cals variant too.

I'm gonna kill lots of flyes with 12x .30 cals! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

More seriously, alltough i'm joking about the .30 cals, as long as they'r unshincronized thay should be quite good.

what means synchronised (on guns) does it means they all fire on the same moment?

well, whats the prob with that? well... ok it DOES create a gap between every line of bullets so y9ou'll gte this effect

is that right?

Synchronized guns fire through the prop arc - they are synchronized with the engine so the bullets may pass between the prop blades. The effect is the rate of fire is lowered in comparison to an unsynchronized gun, because there are short moments where they can't fire.

so thatw why some spit versions (with the 8 guns in wing) have 2 located so far on the dge of the wing, because they mustnt fire through prop..

I think i have a simple way to explain it to you.

Sinchronization, and as far as i know, only serves a purpose when mounting MGs on the nose.

What happens is that since it is mounted on the nose, it has to be sinchronized with the speed of the propeller, otherwise and as you can imagine, instead of firing beetween the gaps in the propeller, it will fire AT the proppeler.

Obviously not a good thing to do don't ya think so mate? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

But with the proppeler solution, comes a new problem, the MG, to be sinchronized, looses most of its rate of fire, degrading its speed by half or even more, and also affecting its muzzle velocity greatly.

With unshincronized MGs mounted on the wing roots, you get the full rate of fire and the top muzzle velocity, thus, making this an excelent weapon in combat.

I don't how to explain it further ahead.

Does anyone wants to add something?

Oleg,

As one of the early developers of the Engine Damage models for the Fighter Squadron - Sceamin Deamons Over Europe simulation, I understand and appreciate the extreme amount of time and hard work that must be done for each individual plane and even at times each part of the engines.

Thank you so much for your great attention to detail.

What again are you thinking will be the recommended system specs to handle all these great new features you have added?

Thank you.
I hope that all will understand it and will understadn how much time we spend for programming of each aircraft...

Min specs are 800 mgz 256 RAM GF2, But with Gulf of Finland map strongly recommended 512 RAM. Or the map will go in to swap file and will be uploading periodically if you will fly for a long distance.

That to use at 100% effiency the feature of custom skins (and pilots /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif ) for each aircraft, more RAM on video card is recommended.

Absolut Fantastic /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

but i have a question.
Is the player able to put the Mirror on and off in flight?

Because if yes he could check six for short and would not be distrupt by a worser forward view in Combat.

Could there be a option to enable or disable Mirror by player only in Men√ľ if answer is yes?

I had that idea as i saw the Mirrors /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Thansk Oleg. Not that i think that i'll really need it but i'm a bit afraid that FB could dramaticly drop the fps rate. You still said nothing about the fps rate in FB /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . Is it top secret? Would also like to know how much CPU power the new flightmodel needs, compared to the current IL2 flightmodel. So we would have a clear picture about the improvments in this sector. When the IL2 FM uses let's say 50% of the available CPU power, the FB FM uses 60% of the available CPU power. Something like that would be helpful if it is possible to clearify such things.

I am wondering and hoping (and probably this works out fine) that if in a COOP with 24 skins
that players who do not choose to have seperate skins will have no penalties at all.

In the Red Baron sim it was able to have piles of skins but even if you chose default skins
there was still the load to carry of the default skins for the extra squad numbers used. It
forced people to upgrade or not play when those who had came online with skin after skin.

So I wonder if extra skins being used will affect players with this feature turned off?

They actually look like Tempest Mk V's, with Napier Sabre powerplants and a tail fillet. After the first production run of 100 or so, they were fitted with short barrel Hispano 20mm cannon (ie the barrels didn't protrude beyond the wing leading edge).

Oleg what can we say.

Thankyou very very much for your weekly update.

Ill continue to say it.

You are the best flight sim developer ever!

Why?

You communicate with us.
You listen to what we want in the game.
If possable you incorporate it.
You put up with bad flames - from people who dont know what they are talking about AND
Still you talk and listen to us.

Such huge patience!!!

Again a huge thankyou - from somebody who cant build flight sim games!

In future updates - please any hints on new ground units.

Again thankyou Best wishes

I really think that CFS3 will get it's *** kicked for sure. I wonder that these mirrors were mounted in a way, that they block the forward view. I though tht mirrors inside the cockpits were mounted to fit into the area which is coverd by the canopy frames. But in the La-7 this huge mirror blocks the upper middle field of view. I can see me toggling between zoom view and normal view quite a bit.

The caption could be right, but just remeber that captions in books are often incorrect. Certainly No.486 Sq. (RNZAF) flew Typhoons in 1944, but later that year they also flew Tempests. Look in the middle of the photo and you will see the tail of one of the fighters. It looks to be a Tempest tail, not a Typhoon's.

Anyway, it's irrelevant since you were referring to the cannon and not the a/c ;-)

Michel Vipert made 3D Me-262 cockpit with the help of a lot of people, including from museums and using flight manual of Me-262.

Be sure it is the best ever restored cockpit of Me-262.

That small fortress on a just as small island, is it not just north of Schlisselburg? I have a distinct recollection of my trip to the town once with the view of this small island. Not very far from the towns shipyard by Lake Ladoga.

If you mean this one normal view you make a great mistake. Tha is done from the top of the airframe border, if not higher.

and thereare absent several indicators and the holes of them closed by special small panels. Looking for the clors of the pics posted there it isn't serial Me-262, but some of experimental

hi,
yes I agree Mr. O. Maddox..

there is a little misunderstanding ..I talk about the normal view in Game (we have also 'visor'..+ 'far vision')
+ in 'normal vision' the perspective I feel is wrong ..
The size of the STRUT behind the visor looks too small
hope in game it works well ?

hi,..: http://www.stormbirds.com/schwalbe/technical/tech2.htm

The global problem is the the human eye view isn't like the view on a monitor that limited by border.

That to compensat it all developers makes the angle of perspective vier a bit wide than in reality (if to limit human eye by the same border of the monitor frame).

So if to make absolytely relative angles of view equal to human eye and at the same time limited by boder of the monitor frame, we will get even smaller field of view that we offer in a normal view of IL-2.

That is compromise, that by no way has not any distortions in a modeling of 3D cockpit.

It is like you take one picture from one and the same point, but change the lense of camera.
Just try to take by the case any your own picutres with 50 mm and 35 mm lense.

Or better to seat in a cockpit and then take by the camera with zoom lens one the same picture with the zoom position 35 and 50 mm of the lense focus.

50 mm in that case will be equal to human eye.
35 mm will be equal to normal view in IL-2.

In both cases like on the photo you'll get and like on monitor the view of human eye is limited by:

- border of the photo in case of photo-picture.
- border of the monitor frame in case of simulation.

Sure now you understand differences.

We can make absolutely equal to human eye or 50 mm lense view ( mode of gunsight view is the most close to that angel of view), but in that case you get limited to the sides view, that had not real eye (even if it isn't in focus, the human eye and brain has calculation of info from the sides)

Hope now you get the differences between the human eye and monitor.

Really it is very easy. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

It is view mode when we move the head to the right side (for german planes) and change the view mode to smaller than our normal view angel, close to the 50mm lens view.

By this way we satisfy the differences in real world and virtual.

Well done Oleg you are the total professional when it comes to flight sims, and we are all lucky to have such a dedicated man in charge of the development of IL2.No other flight sim comes remotely close to IL2 for realism and after sales support.Your drive to improve what is already a great sim is breath of fresh air in a wourld that is interested only with inbuilt obsolescence.Again well done and good luck with all your work.

Truly outstanding work, I can hardly wait! One question comes to mind concerning the Me-262...since jets must operate at higher altitudes for fuel efficiency, will FB change the way scenery is presented at altitudes above, say, 6km? Presently in IL-2, there is almost a "fisheye lens" view distortion.

An idea for the mirror/ fps hit.

Make a "check mirror" key that when you press it the view zooms to the mirror, when released, world beyond the mirror is not rendered thus bringing up fps. Of couse if you have high end computer you can leave the mirror on all the time; zooming to the mirror would still help.

Shouldn't be too hard?

As several others have noted in their responses, I can't wait until FB is available here in the U.S. You and your development team are to be congradulated on the product support and interest you are able to maintain with IL-2. I don't see anything that we haven't.

This is not for including in the game. It is for other purpose.

We don't need to include any 3D max plug in tools in a game. Plug in is for 3D Max for view in 3D stereoscopic mode.

Glasses - it is also separate thing. It works with films on a computer and games,

I don't see the question. I don't understand the question.

Maddox Games company was founded in 1992 and in 1999 was assimilated by sofware monster (oh, by russian scale, anyway http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ) 1C. Now they are division of 1C - 1C:Maddox Games. (information from maddox.1c.ru )

Oleg,

I have flown for 6 years myself (gliderplanes) and your game is the BEST and most REALISTIC game I have ever seen!!! It feels so realistic!!! Really Amazing... Already now the game is perfect. (i also flew the metalic B-4 Pilatus, which was a great aerobatic plane!) and flying the IL-2 planes feels so familiar!!

Especially compared to the Flight Simulator range of products... Although I like those series for doing some flight planning, and doing some low clouds, dark hours, IFR flights, nothing can match the IL-2 series for simple realistic hours of fun!

I only think that your company should put a bit more money into marketing & advertising, because:
a. The game is not available in all shops in my country (I had to look hard to buy this game);
b. The Microsoft series are already a 'brand' on their own. Think your goal should be to be the 'father' of combat flight sims. Just do a lot of smart branding !

I think you should push some magazines in conjuction with 1 or 2 real pilots to do a popular Flight Simulator test that will test the different combat flight simulators on a few aspects.. Guess who the winner will be.. ;-)

Be sure I will buy the upgrade FB. Where do I need to sign, or give my credit card number to be the first to get the game ? Even willing to pre-test already with my 401 squadron mates. ;-)

Few notes:
1. Adjustable wind would be nice (cross wind on baseleg and final is simply fun!)
2. Turbulence would be a nice feature ;
3. In reality under the clouds there are often big uplifts (thermals) ;
4. If 3 becomes true, could we have a real used german ww-2 glider plane ? ;-)
5. Slipping on final with the wrong wing up with sidewinds can have fatal consequences by loosing suddenly all lift from one wing (=dead).

If you need more IP capacity in Eastern Europe (to upload patches) or for Ubisoft in the world for your game-updates, just let me know. We might be able to do something interesting for you!! 2 Mbps, 34 Mbps, 45 Mpbs, 155 Mbps, 1000 Mbps, just let me know.

Many regards & respect, Traceshot!
