Blitz game rules

Hello,

I am very new to chessmaster and chess. Please understand that I am not accusing someone of cheating I am simply asking what it is about blitz that I do not understand.

I recently had a player down to 2 seconds but he kept getting bumped up to 3 or 4 seconds. This lasted in excess of 15 or so seconds. Does chessmaster perhaps give a player more time when they put someone in check?

It could not have been server lag as it lasted for so long and I have a great connection (very low ping).
