I just noticed something interesting about the Mars memories in the Ghosts of Christmas Past chapter of the Holidays pack. So the woman Vanessa stole control of the Mars lander and sold it to this Robert fellow, who she says is from America. I would imagine this was so Abstergo can keep any info about the truth of humanity's origins secret from the public just like when they planted a fake "missing link" skeleton as mentioned in AC2's Truth puzzles.
But tonight I reread the last event in the memory, which is titled "Slip of the Tongue." Vanessa mentions to Robert that it's ironic that she's selling the Beagle, since her mom always said that Darwin was in their family tree. After she says this, Robert stares at her and suddenly becomes insistent that she come back to his office with him in America. I originally assumed that she was killed, but now I think she was simply being abducted because she has Darwin as an ancestor, and Robert works for Abstergo and knows that viewing his memories would be useful.
It's not a big deal, but I thought it was interesting and I'd never noticed it before or seen anyone talk about that aspect. She could be one of the Subjects before Desmond. She's definitely not Subject 4 or 16, and likely isn't 12 or 15 either. I wonder if Darwin had a Piece of Eden...

Yeah she was abducted, though she probably would have been killed if she DIDN'T mention the Darwin thing.

Nice thinking. don't know if darwin had a peice, but don't think so. darwin invented a theory, while people like tesla invented more "practical" things, or like ghandi, used it for political reasons.

Mars project was in 2003. Considering the Animus was build under Lucy's eye and she had been working for, what was it, 5 years in Abstergo(in 2012), that's not very likely.
Then again, considering Erudito said they had to farm memories for the DDS, the only way they could've had access to these memories was through her, or her kids.
So you might be right. In any case, it's not that important for the continuation of the story, so it's not likely we'll ever get an answer to this...

The Animus is much older than Lucy's tenure with Abstergo. Warren Miles said in the first game that he had spent the past 30 years trying to understand genetic memory, so that dates back to 1982. Subject 4, Daniel Cross, was mentioned in a letter seen in ACB's Truth Clusters from Warren Vidic in 1985. He was also shown using an Animus in The Fall comic during this same time period.
I'm curious what exactly Lucy did for the Animus, but it seems she simply helped design and build the current version of it. The Subjects date back all the way to the 80s, and there don't seem to have been many of them.
Subject 12 had an ancestor involved in the Philadelphia Project, and Vanessa in the Mars memories is British, so she likely wouldn't be #12. We know from the Abstergo Industries site emails that Subject 15 was pregnant and "retired" in December of 2010, likely ruling her out as well.
We obviously have no clue of Vanessa's fate, but I thought the end of her story was more satisfying once I realized the likely reason for her abduction at the end was for her genetic heritage that she had let slip.
An interesting point about these memories is it seems the data is useless without a person to experience the memories and interpret them for Abstergo. Seems it's a big reason behind needing recruits for the DDS -- they can't just run all the data through a computer and see all the info. Seems this is part of the reason behind the silly Facebook polls they've been running as well.

I seem to have missed that. Thanks for the info.
That makes it a lot more probably for Vanessa to be subject 12.
In any case, why would Abstergo be interested in Darwin? Would they suspect his theory was not entirely his?
I faintly remember a Piece of Eden on Galapagos from Altair's map... Might be a coincidence, might not...

Great find on seeing the dot located on the Galápagos Islands on the Apple's map. I could see the history of the AC world being that Darwin found an artifact there that showed him the roots of his theories.
Actually, I was saying that Vanessa probably isn't Subject 12, since Subject 12 had a descendent who had memories of the Philadelphia Project in America. Vanessa is British and descended from Darwin, who was also British.

Wasn't Darwin one of the assassins? I'm quite sure I saw something about it somewhere. That would explain Abstergo's interest in his descendants.

Remember, we're using the DDS, not an Animus. We have memories from people who could not have conceived a child after what we see (like that person's death), so we know that getting memories through progeny isn't the only way :-).

Actually, its far more likely that Darwin would have been a templar. Since the Templars are actively encouraging the existence of the Theory of Evolution to cover the truth of man's actual origins. Its likely he went to Galapagos to get an 'apple' or other piece of Eden which he then used to create acceptance of the theory worldwide.
I can't think of any reason the Templars would actively perpetuate an idea created by an Assassin.
Memories of past Templars are probably equally useful in obtaining POEs that have been lost.
