Back in August of last year, I was one of those unfortunates who was unable to install Myst IV because my DVD drive (Lite-On DVD+RW SOHW-8225) would choke on Disk #2. I tried lots of suggestions made over in the Tech Help & Advice Forum, but to no avail.

I was unable to return the software due to its having been opened, so it just sat on a shelf collecting dust until earlier this month, when my DVD drive went belly-up. I went right down to my friendly neighborhood computer store, made my best guess about which kind of drive would get long with Myst IV, and bought one.

Miracle of miracles, it worked. To say that I was flabbergasted is an understatement! Even better, the game runs flawlessly, with nary a glitch in sight.

Once I got into the game, I was even more flabbergasted. I spent days and days just wandering around Haven and Spire, taking in the amazing sights and sounds and breathtaking graphics. I've never seen a more beautiful game than Myst IV.

After I got serious about moving forward, I still took my time -- I was definitely in no rush to get to the end. Although some of the puzzles were tough, I did pretty well until I hit Serenia. I have a horrible sense of direction in real life, and it certainly spilled over into this Age. I got lost repeatedly. And even after finding a map of Serenia online, I still got lost! So I did something I've never done before in any game, because I simply don't think of it. I started using Zip Mode. It helped considerably! (Smacking forehead.)

A little earler, I finished Myst IV. And not to get blubbery or anything, but the ending actually brought a tear to my eye -- which is something that Myst, Riven, Exile and Uru never did.

I'm sooooo happy I finally got to play Myst IV. While it does have its flaws, I think its a wonderful game. I can genuinely say that it was worth the wait!

Hi trudger,

I am very curious about that Zip mode of yours. Would you kind enough to tell me what it does and where did you get it from ?

I bet if BulaRae ever read this post, she might worry for her "problem child" trying this new tool. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Hey nanoukmetal,

Zip mode is one of the game options in Myst IV. From the Main Menu, choose Options, then Game Options, and the first item is Zip mode (the symbol is a little lightning bolt surrounded by a circle), which can be toggled on or off. If you see an "X" in the box on the right-hand side, it's enabled. To put an "X" there, just click on the box. (I don't remember if it's enabled by default or not.)

The Zip symbol will then appear during the game as an icon on the right-hand side of the interface. If you click on it, you'll see some thumbnails representing your choices.

This is what the manual has to say about it:

"With the Zip Mode interface, you can quickly access certain areas you have already visited in an Age (if that remains physically accessible from your current location). When you reach a new area, a thumbnail will be added to your Zip Mode interface. To reach a new area with Zip Mode simply click on the icon and then on the thumbnail representing the area you want to reach. When the thumbnail is grayed out, it means you cannot access that location at the present time. To exit Zip Mode, you can either right-click or simply click on the icon again."

Not every game offers a zip mode option, but with those that have, I've never considered using it for some reason (until now). As I've said, it really helped me get around in Serenia! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

trudger, you are a very kind person.

Thank you very much for the detailed infos. Too bad I never saw this option when I played the game. I was new at pcs at the time with no previous experience before buying one and was still very nervous when I played this second game of mine. Had no idea what I was doing at the time, (17 months ago) age 60++. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Awwww...you're very welcome, nanoukmetal! I'm happy I could help.

And big congrats on discovering PCs and adventure gaming at this stage in your life! Just keep at it, and you should gain more confidence. We were all newbies at one time! And try to remember -- this stuff is supposed to be *fun*!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
