View Full Version : Am I just lucky or...?

After hearing all the horror stories concerning SCDA PC I had spent a while pondering whether or not to take the required steps needed to be able to run a copy of my own. I decided to give in but wasn't intending or even willing to break the bank to do so. It would all be down to pure pot luck.

So I purchased a cheap Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro 512mb card to replace my old none SM 3.0 card, then decided today to download the SP demo to see if things were as bad as I expected them to be.

I had already hit a problem when I first attempted to install the SP demo when my computer locked up not once but twice in the process. 3rd time lucky however and all went well.

Booted up the demo and saw the game had set the graphics options to next gen automatically and at a standard 1024 res.

2fps here I come, or so I thought.

The opening section kicked in and to my utter surprise the game was running extremely smooth. Got down to earth and realised that the 2fps I was expecting had instead been replaced with an acceptable 20+fps. I also noticed that my plugged in 360 windows gamepad was rumbling all over my damn desk, so I picked it up and lo and behold we had instant movement. And still the game was running just fine - I was in shock and still am tbh. I'd been told even an x1600 would struggle with the game and yet the demo runs better than I could ever have hoped for.

If anyone is curious below are my specs:

Chaintech ZNF3-150
AMD Athlon-64 3400+
ATI Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro 512mb
IDE Maxtor 200GB 7200RPM (8MB Cache)
1GB 3200 DDR Ram
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 Player

And here's some screens with the fps I am getting clearly displayed:

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/8825/splintercell42006120615ad1.jpg http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/7176/splintercell42006120615xd5.jpg http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/8739/splintercell42006120616dz8.jpg

Even though the fps shown are always between say 15-25 the game always runs very smoothly so don't let that throw you. So basically I am wondering now if I am just ultra lucky or will the full release when it arrives be a completely different story to what I have now experienced in the demo?

The full release should be here any day now so it's still 50/50 how that will run compared to the covered in fog style of the level I just tried.

Wish me luck anyway.

The demo ran pretty well for me on those same settings (1024x768, Next-Gen, etc) with a bit higher framerate. For comparison, I'm running a P4 3.0Ghz, 2GB RAM, and a 7800GS. I did notice the "save bug" that a number of people are reporting, as well as some isolated graphics/playability issues that didn't severely impact gameplay. In other words, I could get around them fairly simply when encountered. Part of the reason I haven't picked up the game involves these issues and others that are widely reported. The other part has to do with me not really liking the game enough to justify parting with $50 USD.

The Double Agent demo certainly isn't the best performing game I've ever installed, but it's definitely playable on the settings mentioned. I agree with you that even when the framerate dips into the 20's, the action still stays relatively smooth. I hope you have as good of an experience with the full game as you had with the demo.

You won't notice the lagg that much because the game is slow based anyway - So I guess 21 FPS is acceptable , I mean I learned to live with it :O<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Um, I don't suppose anyone can tell me how to do the hacking section of the SP demo as I just can't seem to crack it.

I've cleared the base and now have to detonate the detonators to get through the wall, but I'm just getting nowhere with this damn hacking lark.

Any hints/tips appreciated.

To hack, highlight the still number and press space. Do this for all four columns and you're done.

But if you think the game is smooth, why not go buy it? And then, you will NOT complain, not even a single word.

Not about the crashings of every other level, not about the terrible MP, not about the AI bugs, the detection errors, the lack of chat lobby in versus, and some 50 odd other bugs in the game.

It's a bloody demo. Of course it's gonna run good. Who puts their ugly side in a demo?

I have bought the game it has simply not yet arrived for me to fully test out.

The whole point of this thread was that I was surprised with how the demo ran on a card I'd only just bought that many told me would not be very capable of playing the game at a decent speed. So please excuse my moment of joy that it ran better than I expected.

I'd heard that the demo was just as filled with problems as the final release. But I guess I was wrong.

Thanks for the hacking tips, I'm still having trouble though as there just does not seem to be enough time given to choose all 4 number sets.
