Starting to spec my new build. Anticipating I will go with the new Sandy Bridge CPU i7-2600K & at tbd P67 MB that are supposed to be available early 2011. Will the GTX580 be overkill? Otherwise the GTX570 & ATI6970 seem to be about on par with each other.

Obviously my context is SOW Cliffs of Dover. Feedback? Thanks in advance.

It really only depends on your budget. Aren't there 6XX cards coming out soon from Nvidia?

A GTX580 won't be overkill for that system, no.

The 2600K is a quad core/hyperthread proc so if you have the dough, aim for the P67 skies. If your budget is a bit limited, the GTX570 is proving to be a great card. AMD's 69xx series aren't really that impressive as a single card compared to the 58xx. They scale beautifully though so if you want to crossfire in the future, 69xx is a good and cheaper option to Nvidia.

I'd be extremely surprised if you can't max out SoW with a 2600K, GTX580 on a P67 board.

re I7's down to a reasonable price, yet? By reasonable price I mean £80 (around $135?)

Here's a nice roadmap on Intels plans in the near future:

@ Xiolablu3: The LGA1366 i7's are still around $300. LGA1156 i7's are around $250.

I don't think you will see any i7's down to $135 unless you find something used. They usually don't drop the prices that much if they are about to phase out a product line, unless you can find a clearance sale somewhere.
