John Peel has died of a heart attack in Peru at the age of 65. He was probably the most easily recognisable DJ on the radio and helped to launch BBC Radio 1, bringing popular music into the limelight. He championed new acts and genres such as punk and reggae when most DJs were sticking firmly to the mainstream. Many bands would never have seen the light of day but for him. He leaves wife Sheila and four children.

IIRC, yes he did DH.
You know he got hundreds of demo CDs every week, and he'd listen to them all and keep them all, because he didn't want to miss any hidden gems. He had to have his house extended to fit his demo CDs and tapes in.

americans/canadians wont have heard of him but he was a bbc radio DJ who was very likable,he gave many new bands airtime and singlehandedly hoisted the punk group THE UNDERTONES {irish band lead singer fergal sharkey} out of nowhere, his fav record was by the undertones
