Combination of tree and bell probably didn`t help.
You`ll never catch me sticking a bell on a cat, so unatural and probably drives the cat crazy too.

poor old cat...it sounds like he was scared, but he probably never knew what hit him (thank god)...

I can't stand these castrated bell carrying domesticated cats. Stop the humiliation! The thing is a preditor. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
I have a cat, I has no collar, doesn't come inside, and it's the most affectionate creature you've seen.
Sorry about your cat nevertheless.

Same here. My male cat was never castrated, nor had a collar. He is affectionate and free, and never scratched furniture nor pi$sed out of his box, because I bothered myself in training him, so he knows who's the Alpha at home.

Just the other day I was out running on my fav track near the river... suddenly sky went dark grayish and heavy rain started...
You could "feel" the lightning danger in the air, so I tried to get away from any trees (wasn't so difficult since there is a few).
All those circumstances led me to run the track much faster than usual.
Funny thing about it, after 2km or so I spotted three idiots under umbrellas... well picture this.
River. Running track near the river. Trees here and there, pretty much flat terrain around river mostly corn fields all around. So... there are this few trees and three idiots under one tree (under umbrellas).
Why I said idiots?
Like it isn't enough for you to stand under the large tree in the middle of a storm, like it isn't enough that you actually stand under one of the very few trees in the vicinity (I think there was 4-5 trees in the 1km circle or so), there you have this totally burned lifeless tree which was struck by a lightning in some of the past storms.
How stupid is that?
Don't answer, I don't wanna know http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . Me and my gang laughed our ****s of when I told the story...

Bearcat's right,it was the tree.Due to conditions set up by the storm, the tree or any object large enough(between a cat and a tree, the tree will be electrically much stronger simply due to size) will send up positively charged "streamers/leaders" toward the negatively charged cloud. If they by chance meet, then 'bang'-dead cat and a split tree.
Lightning begins from the ground(or object on the ground),if that streamer/leader meets a negative charge, you get a strike.
The cat picked the wrong tree that day.
And remember,we all send up positive streamers/leaders;so.if the conditions are right,BANG! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Nothing against cats but.......
That's great that your cats don't do any annoying stuff in your homes. But what about your neighbors homes? I've been kept awake many a night by a tom serenading the local ladies. The territorial marking isn't much fun either. Also, unfixed pets tend to breed, which contributes to the number of unwanted animals in shelters, many of which must be put down. Years ago I had a girlfriend who's sister worked in a shelter. One of her tasks was euthanizing unwanted cats and dogs. Came home crying almost everyday and finally had to quit. Frankly, I'd rather neuter/spay my cat or dog than kill a kitten or a puppy...
