Hello fellow Settlers lovers,
I got acquainted with Settlers 3 through a sample CD someone gave me and after an hour I was totally hooked. I went out and bought the game the next day. I played it constantly for about a month, but life took over and I hadn't played for quite sometime. Recently I picked it up and reinstalled and started through the single player campaigns again. I am stuck on the Egyptian campaign 6. I barely get my economy up and running when the Romans invade. They are fully upgraded and have priests with them who convert half my soldiers off the bat. Needless to say, it doesn't take long for them to completely decimate my settlement. I tried minimizing the number of towers available for takeover but the sheer number and strength of the soldiers make it seemingly impossible to overcome. Help!!

No offense, but that info was utterly useless on this campaign. I reduced my settlement to one small tower and still, they marched right over and took over. I restarted the campaign and march into the heart of their settlement, thinking "how in the hell can they build up manna and gold so quickly" Well, I found out that they start out with a stock pile of food, weapons and mines already built. And half of their soldiers are already upgraded and their priests are full of wine! This campaign is impossible!!!

You need to be very careful with what you build on your southern half of the eastern part of the map. Keeping one single tower next to the Romans is right. Try to expand as fast as you can to the north as you need a lot more land to build on. Start a manna production, build a big temple and use your manna to convert the swamp to green land; you will need to expand further to the north, you will even need the small desert to build residences there. The only gem resource that you can access is close to the Asian border.

That makes sense. I did think I needed to build the strength of my soldiers and I did notice that the only sources of gems were in the north near the asians.
Will leaving a few towers in the south stave off attacks on my northern settlement?

Don't build any towers in the north, just keep that single one next to the Romans. The northern part cannot get attacked if there are no towers.
You need quite a strong army to attack the Romans, about 400 at least, 600 are better. About half of them should be bowmen and half of them spearmen, so set the sword production to zero. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks for these hints! I recently pulled out my Settlers III and found this mission nearly impossible. It took me about 30 goes to do it. Rereading the manual and especially these hints (difficult to find!) really helped me to finally win. So, to help others in the same boat, here's my mini-walkthrough:
Fully garrison your castle, and delete all other guard towers. Only use pioneers to increase your land (and expand to the north quickly). Have all your remaining troops patrolling right on top of the castle. This is so the enemy can have nothing to steal.
Fastest way to get to soldier production Start by building: a small residence then> stone cutter>medium residence>stone cutter>stonecutter>woodcutter>sawmill so that you have basic things going. It's worthwhile setting stone to store and having one storage facility full.
Be careful what you build on the southwest. Don't worry too much about the enemy expanding to there - they will eventually build guard towers near your land but only as far as the leftmost mountains.
Obviously you want to have a weapon smith running ASAP. I found the top middle mountains the easiest to mine from. Don't worry about having your food chain complete first - build three fisherman's huts to support your basic iron ore and 2 coal mines to get you started. When you have some more soldiers covering your castle you can start with grain farms, and building extra mines further north. You want to change the weapon production level to 100% archers, and it's better to have more spearmen than swordsmen. You can crush your enemy's guard towers as you go to keep the maximum number of soldiers.
There's so many things to try and do at once, but make manna a priority to upgrade your soldiers. Also build a pyramid (large temple). Once you get two priests, you can destroy it to have building materials if you need them. You'll probably want to convert the swamp in the north to grassland, and you'll use a lot of the northern desert for large residences.
The only gems are up the north on the left near the Asian border. Keep rebuilding over it to get the maximum you can out of it. Also have at least two goldsmiths to increase your strength as fast as you can.
Other things: stone cutters and residences should be built as often as you can to keep everything going. The enemy has about 600 soldiers, so you should have at least 300 before you consider an attack. It's worthwhile sending off a few spies to check out their weak points to divide their territory in half. Remember to have a couple of save points! One time I was doing everything right, and they came and attacked too soon. I loaded my saved game, and then they didn't attack for ages. Keep persevering!!!
And when you've got three iron smelters and weaponsmiths and so many large residences you think you can't possibly need more, it's time to attack! And why not go and destroy the Asians as well, for fun, because you've worked so hard.

Oh, this campaign has had my head aching for months.. Its 1 of the hardest missions in all of settlers I have ever came face to face with.. If we are talking about the campaign, with Egyptians versus Asians and Romans, who share (allied) a huge island to the east and south, with our poor Egyptians stuck on 3 islands without much to work with, and a small peak of the big island, with the asians' border so near it.
I finished it, by having a medium tower on that small peak, almost all of my soldiers were in there. Somehow, the romans and asians didn't attack, mostly I think I got lucky and they had some unfinished business, cause I found romans in asian towers, but they still have once attacked me side by side.
This is a hard mission.. I dont wanna remember it too much..
