Just opening this new thread now that the game has been released (kind of, in some parts of the world0 to provide a place for RoF comments and impressions OF THE GAME, not the verification system.
Probably won't be much action in here till late June when 777 releases it in the US but since I JUST ORDERED MY COPY http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I was too excited to wait. Wonder if I can actually run it on my system??
=====================================
Where can I buy it??!!
-Russia
- The US - distribution being handled by -777Studio's. No doubt Jason can add more info about this.
-Outside the US - by mail order from FlightSim Pilot Shop (fspilotshop.com).
----------------------------------------
Let's limit discussion to getting, running, playing the game. And screenshots, lots of screenshots. We all know about the unique verification system already.

i've looked at some of the early reports on it, and so far it looks more like a late beta then a finished game
the good news is that the flightmodels are supposed to be good (equal or slightly better then the current il2), and some of the scenery looks very good (weather and clouds for ex look good, but i saw reports the clouds and weather effects are fixed and static in effect/location, clouds dont move, and weather/wind doesnt change dynamically as weather fronts move)
the development reports on this sim sounded exiting and got a lot of attention but it now looks more like a well crafted marketing ploy then an indication of the actual product they will provide. but in addition to the DRM issue, the absence of offline play problem and cumbersome online way it works (people already reporting not being able to play for several hrs when the russian servers are down) the online element is extremely minimal right now (only 5-v-5 servers, no dogfight servers at all yet, no campaign, and no coop scenario's either). add to that lack of briefing/debriefing, limited AI aircraft (they are v taxing on cpu load), minimal ground activity and very empty in-game world (a few trucks/tanks to find for a mission, but the rest of the RoF is silent and empty except for the flak explosions)
add to that you only get 2 planes in the sim you buy for 60$, and need to right from the start keep buying extra planes, new scenery etc... this will be a very expensive roiling carpet of constant money paying that you get on for a hobby. some wont mind spending money and trying it (in for a penny, in for a pound....), myself i'll wait to see how it pans out once it is more fully developed and will try the demo out when it is released first.
i think RoF probably become a very small niche market only where they will have to keep squeezing the same locked in buyers for more money and keep releasing new payware addon bits all the time, and will make manic depressives out of normal flightsimmers because it has great highs (looks good, flies nice) and some extreme lows (unfinished product, not being able to play in whenever and wherever you want to game, limited gameplay content, constant extra money spending etc...)
RoF are already working on their next sim product, it is not as if this project is their main and only item for sale that they will keep working on to refine and finish, it is more a new sales model they will release more products in by changing just a few ingredients and making it look different (ww-2 sim is already in the works for ex, all they need is a few different plane models, slightly change the scenery etc..). thank the gods we have oleg plodding away at the new game engine he has in the works, i much prefer that as a gaming concept.

That sounds historically accurate. Been reading several WW1 books lately and it's rare that you'll find enemy aircraft to tangle with in 90% of your patrols. The skies over France, etc were BIG, and so few planes to patrol it. Lots and lots of patrolling, very little action other than constant engine trouble. And even if you did spot an enemy aircraft, it was very rare that anyone got shot down. Most deaths were from engine trouble and pilot errors.
I don't know, I'm no historian.

I don't know, I just read "Winged victory" by V.M.Yeates, which is accredited as being an accurate, first-hand depiction of aerial warfare in the closing stages of the war, and it would seem that seeing large formations of aircraft (if not always fighting them) was a regular experience. Yeates also describes the low-level bombing and strafing missions that the Camel pilots were sent on, and the fear that they generated amongst the pilots because of the sheer numbers of guns (archie, machine-guns & rifles) that were fired at them as they sought out likely targets.
I still remain confused by neoqb's anachronistic approach to the time-line of WW1. Quoting Jon Guttman, a writer specialising in WW1 aviation, "... the Fokker D VII. Entering combat in May 1918 , this plane earned a reputation as the most formidable fighter of the war, yet the SPAD XIII's greater speed, especially in a dive, and its outstanding durability, proved a fearsome rival."
Why on earth start at the end of the war?

Flatspin,
I'm not going to discuss this product on another publisher's board. I'm discussing stuff over at SimHQ.

Oh yeah. This IS a publisher's site, isn't it?
Who moderates these forums anyway?!

Release has been delayed a few days due to some logistical hitch. It'll be shipping June 25th or something. I'll be sure to let you know once it arrives. That's if my PC hasn't crapped out on me again, which is looking likely.

Weird thinking. About half the Americans that I know and fly with are regularly flying 109s and 190s (and loving it.) I don't think that reason stands close scrutiny. Myself, I'll be waiting to see the Camel, the Albatros DV, the SE5a and the DR1 introduced before I spend my brass.
Sorry for getting off your topic Flatspin, and I hope you get sorted soon.

Thing is, your talking about regular flight simmers, what he's talking about is the uninitiated public, who do think that way, "This game looks neat, but where's the american planes?!".

"Yeah, where are the American planes?! If it wasn't for that, and that dingblasted internet connection thing, I'd be willing to throw my hat into the ring and buy this game.!"

My dad and my aunt told my brothers and I that they were waiting in line to get a ride in a Curtiss Jenny at a county fair back in the 1920's. They said that there was a long line of people that paid two bits apiece to take one turn around the field, and that the plane at some point suddenly crashed into the ground, killing the pilot and the two people riding passenger. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

The risk with barnstorming was part of the appeal.
When a teenage girl drowned white water rafting near here (sheer bad luck not a safety issue with the tour company) the popularity of the white water tours shot up immensely.
