View Full Version : Favorite aircraft movie?

A while ago, someone asked for a list of movies with JETS in them... and got a few responses.

So out of curiosity, I'm going to open the floodgates a little wider and ask for your favorite aircraft-related movie.

For example:

Battle of Britain
Memphis Belle
Flight of the Intruder
Hot Shots

or, my personal favorites:

#1: Dawn Patrol
#2: The Blue Max

If you love aircraft, and pretty darn good story lines, you can't go wrong with either of my top two picks. (WWI timeline in both though, so no jets. Sorry guys.)

Hmmmm...I am gonna say:

1) Top Gun
and
2) Midway

For all its childishness, lack of realism, and a plot that Dr. Suess could come up with: Top Gun is still a classic /i/smilies/16x16_man-wink.gif .

Battle of Britain and Memphis Belle are good.

Jet movies - well, however bad it is, nothing has ever or possibly well ever stack up against Top Gun. It can't. Whatever you say about the F22, you can't make a Top Gun movie with it . . . . there's only one seat /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Dambusters?

Aces High?

Hot Shots is alright in a fun kind of way . . . . but all those funny quotes usually mean I laugh too much /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Never seen Flight of the Intruder or Dawn Patrol . . . so can't comment.

Tossup between Battle of Britain and Top Gun. And simply because it's about a real scenario and has less of the Macho crap in it, I go for Battle of Britain.

Not so say Top Gun's not good . . . but Battle of Britain is better . . .

Glider pilot . . . . twist and turn

Another great one is Independence Day, having a high school aged Fresh Prince driving a USMC F/A-18C with USAF insignia... gotta love it.

It's a funny thing, airwar-movies tend to suck eel through plexiglas. Iron Eagle anyone?

One of the best I can remember is a six (I think) episode series called A Piece Of Cake, about the Battle of Britain. It's absolutely brilliant. Quote:
""Never has so many owed so much to so few" ... "He must've seen our bar tab...""

I still haven't seen The Right Stuff, although I've read the book to shreds, is it good?

XyZspineZyX

Behind Enemy Lines and the SAM from hell scene! Love watching that on the bigscreen tv with surround sound. Besides that, I always thought that the Iron Eagle movies (how many were there again?) were pretty cool, though far fetched.

Oh yeah! The Right Stuff is one of the best ever. It's almost 6 hours chronicals a good chunk of jet and space aeronotic history. Pick up the special edition DVD for $20 at Amazon.com.

Tora! Tora! Tora! has some great flying scenes. I also like 633 squadron, that 'Flak Alley' sequence is still one of the best /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . I vaguely remember 'piece of cake' as being very realistic without un-necessary building up of the 'heroes'. Jeez, has no-one made a good jet movie yet? Those mentioned above are not, apart from 'The Right Stuff'

Apocalypse Now! has some cool parts, although largely fictional... Damn Napalm has ruined the surf!!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Anyone remember Bat-21?

Can anyone remember a movie where a US Navy carrier goes through (I'm trying not to laugh here) a time warp and ends up in WW2? I think it ends up with Tomcats VS Zeroes and that's how America turned the tide in the Pacific.

The good thing about that movie is it's the only one I can remember that got the cannon sound right. Not rat-tat-tat at all, just a ripping, tearing roar. Great stuff.
I sure hope the guy who wrote the script managed to shake his drug habit.

Not currently available on VHS or DVD, eh? LOL

But are we restricted to fiction here? I watch Discovery Channel alot, and I remember seeing a clip from, I think, F-15 test flights, where some kind of pod (too small to be fuel) falls off the Eagle's port wing and hits the wing of the A-4 follow plane, cutting it off and sendind the Skyhawk into a flatspin, flames trailing. The pilot ejects to safety. It's captured on three cameras or something, one of the most intriguing aircraft-stuff I've seen.

The F/A-18B is a two seater primarily used for training, with stick and throttle in both seats. The F/A-18D and F can be a trainer, but the rear seat is usually a WSO (Weapons System Officer) who can target and fire weapons independently from the pilot. They can even target and 'lase' weapons for other planes while the pilot takes care of another set of targets. The WSO also helps with SA and navigation.

Also remember, that the F18 used in Behind Enemy Lines was an F18 SUPER Hornet! Much bigger than the a "normal" 18.

Surprised none of you mentioned "Dr. Strangelove", one of the greatest, funniest, most sarcastic movies ever, featuring Peter Sellers in three parts as the US president, a RAF officer and Dr. Strangelove himself.

The blue screen outside clips of the B-52's are nothing special of course, from a realism point of view, but I seem to remember that the USAF was pretty suprised at how well Stanley Kubrick nailed the (then top secret) in-flight procedures in the B-52.

Great suggestions, everyone! Thanks! (Slowly building my DVD library... one aircraft at a time.)

Another suggestion, though aircraft feature only marginally in it, is the documentary: "Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie"

Good historical info, great footage, excellent soundtrack, makes you think... and those who don't like thinking can simply sit back and watch big explosions.

(thought this might be a better contribution than Disney's "Rocketeer".) /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I also find more or less every plane movie too wrong to be really good (haven't checked Dark Blue World yet though).

I still appreciate watching well-made flight scenes no matter how cheesy the dialogues are of course. That's why Top Gun is still a classic even if I couldn't take it for serious when I was 12 (MiG-28? Oh please... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) But good in the real sense? Hmm not really /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

It would be great if there was a movie about planes with the quality of "Das Boot", which I still consider the best overall war movie ever.
