Alright, so I have a pretty kickin' rig - and I decided to fire up ol' faithful IL-2.
I remember there used to be guides and websites that explainend the config files to the user - but I am having a hard time trying to figure it out - everytime I try and use the config files, ie - setting "Water" to 4 to make the water look super awesome - it does not seem to work.
I guess what I am trying to say is - - how do I make IL-2 look the best? What is the best configuration settings to make it look best?
Thanks for your time,
Gub <3

Check Mission4Today, Knowledge Base in the menu to the left. You'll find guides for conf.ini there.
conf.ini guide (http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Knowledge_Base&cat=7)
Tell us what system you have (specific please)" kick ***" or something like that doesn't tell anything. CPU, Graphics card, OS, memory. If you installed to the default location under/Program Files/ Vista will not let you change .ini files.
Make a folder yourself, for example c:/Games/ and copy the main game directory into that /Games/ folder. Also install any IL-2 utilities there in the future and copy the ones you have installed already over there too. You will need to make new shortcuts.

crossed posts, I edited my reply - read the bit about copying the main game folder at the end. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Try this:
[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3
TypeClouds=1
Sky=2
Forest=3
Water=4
Effects=2
I don't have an nVidia card, but this should get you started in the right direction. Others will probably kick in with more details/tips.
I think there is something called Multi-thread optimization in nVidia Control Panel that should be turned off as well. The settings above are for IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 v4.09b1m with the beta dll's of march 2008.

You've got all that going on in that rig and you're only running it at 3.2ghz? I have my Q6600 running at 3.6ghz, if I had an QX9770 I would be trying my damnedest for 4.2ghz, lol.

Not everyone is obsessed with overclocking.
Some people like to play save, keep their warranty and keep temperatures down by staying away from overclocking. In the end - what's the gain; 1% FPS?
I would not overclock my components either.
My opinion is I buy better components before I overclock and burn them up. There are way too many things that can go wrong when you overclock and overstress your system.

While I do understand this position and have no problem with it, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to have an Extreme Edition cpu other than for overclocking. The only difference between the Extreme edition and the regular version is an unlocked cpu multiplier. The only way an unlocked cpu multiplier would be an advantage is if you changed that multiplier, we call that overclocking, lol. Well, there is another reason to get an Extreme Edition cpu other than overclocking, to show you have a bigger E-***** than those that cannot afford an Extreme Edition cpu, lol.

lol certainly not a processor for me then. 1000+ euro's is way over the limit I'm willing to spend for a processor anyway, even if I had the money. I always go for a good price/performance ratio which 99% of the time will leave options to improve my hardware I did that when I bought /upgraded my system last year and it still performs good enough for my taste. I'm happy with my X2 4000+ X1950Pro http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
