1.Do the ranks and medals that you(not your crew) take have any effect in the game?
2.After my 6th patrol I was promoted to Lieutenant Senior. But after I reloaded the "after the patrol" autosave I was again a Lieutenant Junior and any mention of my promotion was wiped off the mission log. Bug? Can it be fixed?
3.Most of the times I change my course using the compass, the new course that my officer says (in German) is different than the one written in the message log. Another bug? And which one is the course I'm following?
4. Is the VIIc better than the VIIb in anything? From what I've seen the only difference is that the VIIc is a little bigger and slower than the VIIb.

1) I don’t believe they have Any effect ‘in the game’ â€" other than to boost your morale & confidence, etc â€" hopefully… http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
And the medals do Look nice in the polished keep-sake display box.
By simple logic, it would seem to me if such had Any effect on Game-Play, etc â€" it would / should reflect in the renown earned for subsequent successful Patrols; which of course, it doesn’t â€" judging by my own career up to May of ’43 thus far.

2) Bummer … Have no clue about that however. Not to worry tho’ â€" you’ll get it after the next patrol most-likely.

3) Sorry â€" have no idea about this one.

4) I had the same question, ‘til my husband explained it to me â€" then I got my VIIC and am glad I did.
The main difference between the VIIB and C, is that the latter will be ‘upgrade-able’ and able to facilitate the new breakthroughs in technology; New C-Tower(s), new guns, Sonar, Radar, etc etc …

To your Q2: I think, but I'm not sure, that you should load the in base-before (=next) mission to have your promotion.

1.I thought that maybe the best subs and upgrades were available only to higher ranks, but you know better Christine.
2.I got the promotion after the next patrol, but the game did not save it(again). I tried loading a save during the next patrol and both autosaves, but I was a Lieutenant Jr. I reinstalled the game and started a new career and I hope I won't have the same problem.
3.To be more clear, for example, the text says "new course 249" and my oficer says "zwei fünf drei"(253).It's not important, but it is somewhat annoying.
4.This means that switching to VIIc is worth it.

Sub upgrades are dependent on what you earn for Renoun. Save it for the boat upgrade you want or use it to add equipement to the boat you already have.

Personally, I'd keep the VIIB and work on getting a Type IXB. More torpedos, 21 in all. 2 stern tubes plus a snorkel can be added. And that is nvery handy as you will see later in the vwar. The only down side is patrols to those far away places, but you do not have to go to them. Once you use up ALL of your torpedos, radio BdU and you will be ordered to RTB.
