Visability at the beginnning of the game

I have just got the game, and right at the beggining I find I can't see more than a foot in front of my face bec ause there is a dense mist or somehting. I can't work out what I am supposed to do, so is this a fault in the game or is it supposed to be like this. If so, what do I do?

What graphics card do u have?
