Hi just bought a nv 8600gt overclock and it was great till after thunderstorm last week. Now it occasioannly rattles out of the blue, do they have any type of fan control etc?? fan seems to spin freely and it didnt need any supplemental power supply hookups, its on a 400 watt power supply and it needs a 350 watt so should be good there as well. Any ideas??

The fan didn't need any PSU hook up, or the card didn't need any PSU hook up? I'd be very surprised if a 8600gt didn't need it's own power connection to the PSU. I dont own one, so I dont know for sure, but I'll google as soon as I've typed this.

As far as Wattage goes, the most important thing for gamers is the amount of Amps on the 12 Volt Rail. I would think the 8600 series would be looking for 30-35 Amps on the 12V. What kind of PSU do you have?

Apparently the 8600gt series dont have an external connector...

"If it(your 8600GT) doesn't have the connector, you don't need more power than the PCI-e 16x slot provides. The manual is in error, or more likely written to cover other cards as well. The 8600GTS is clocked higher (core/shaders/memory) and needs additional power. I have never seen an 8600GT with an external power connector....they just run off the slot alone."

...see this link, about a third of the way down the page...

That's a new one to me, I'd brown my undies if a card arrived without a power connection on it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Here are some more photos just to make sure. I take it your card doesn't have any of these connectors on it?

I still think your PSU might be a bit "pushed" but if you're not getting any graphics corruption then maybe it's ok. The rattle could just be the fan speeding up or slowing down depending on workload.

With any luck, someone who knows more about these cards will chip in and give more info on PSU requirements.

hmm no it dosnt have the connector boxes on the end, there is a box but it is solid. the exact model etc is PNY Verto 8600 GT OC VCG86512GXPB-OC. Power supply is 400 watt Antec which is about 15 months old, a bit loud but never had any issues.

I can think of a couple of things that will make the fan rattle. The little decal on the fan hub is loose, a bad bearing in the fan, the card is getting hot and something is warping allowing the blades to contact the housing, the fan is dying. Take your pick.
