Frankly the reputation of IL2 is made. Why does Oleg need UBI. Once ready just sell your game directly over the internet to the community of gamers. Set your price and up you go. We do not need boxes, packaging etc. We can download the manuals and software. I am ready to pay 100 bucks directly to Oleg to have an untouched original version. And Oleg will surely make more profit as there are no more in betweens like UBI that grab a share of the price.

As I understand, he was obligated by a prior contract to publish under Ubi in the West.

Not really.. How he got himself locked into the second title contract !!!???? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif.
If 1C made a similar setup to steam, plus billing system, they'd be smiling all the way to the bank, with very few hassles.
Oleg knew that this was coming, why did he/1C not do something - it's not brain surgery.

The best thing Oleg could do is to remove any ties to UBI. Look at another russian developer, Eagle Dynamics. They just release their second title in the DCS series and they're selling tons of copies. And no UBI to screw it up for the consumer.

There were 'issues' that happened with the release of Il-2:1946 that we are not allowed talk about here. The only thing we can speculate is that Oleg was probably contractually obligated to publish with UBI so there it is.

So here it is. UBI decided to shoot down Oleg to close those old issues. At least they act as if it was so.

Ubisoft have no clue, they were a good game publisher in the mid/late 90's but they really have been digging their own grave lately with DRM and all this other crap.

That's awesome! Olegs next release will have no stink of UBI on it and I can buy with out feeling guilty that I gave money to one of the worst publishers ever.

You don't need packaging & manuals.
Others are whining they don't have boxes, so I guess your stance is not universal.
But no, Oleg doesn't need Ubi, Ubi doesn't need Oleg. It's a business relation, that's all.
The studio probably needs a western editor unless 1C is able to fionance the development by itself.
But remember that it is them who decided to launch the game now, because they need money.

He'll be back. When the stench of UBI has made it so he can feel like a human again.
